Aleena Abraham, a senior at Hicksville High School, recently won an Award of Excellence from the Art League of Long Island’s “Go APE” exhibit. She was honored for her oil on canvas painting entitled “Tenderness,” which was displayed at an Advanced Placement student exhibition. Students in AP Art classes in schools across Long Island took part in the nonprofit organization’s 14th annual exhibition. Aleena said that her inspiration for the painting came from the love and emotional bonds that people have with one another. “It was a painting of me and my sister Annliya sharing an orange and ear buds with one another in the backlight of a window,” said Abraham. “I wanted to portray the act of sharing and the familial love that we have for each other.” She said that when she was painting the picture, she was listening to the instrumental music of a song called “Merry Go Round of Life.” The song is featured in a Japanese animated fantasy film called “Howl’s Moving Castle.” “I was watching this movie and listening to this song, and was just inspired by how much of an emotional bond the char-
acters and family had for each other. I wanted to convey that image in my head into this painting.” The “Go APE” (Advanced Placement Exhibition) featured 2- and 3-dimensional works by 124 students from 37 different high schools across the Island. Andrea Lawl Manning, program manager at Art League, selected the award of excellence winners and the honorable mentions. “The Go APE exhibition is one of our most exciting exhibitions every year,” said See page 23
