POLAR PLUNGE

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently participated in the Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge, held annually at TOBAY Beach to benefit Special Olympics New York. All funds raised at the event support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Supervisor Saladino was joined at this great cause by Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, Assemblyman Mike Durso, North Hempstead Supervisor Jen DeSena, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Legislator Steve Rhoads.

Legislators collect donations for Ukrainian relief In less than a week, the County Legislature’s Ukrainian Relief Drive collection bins at Cantiague Park have overflowed with supplies. Legislator Laura Schaefer, whose district includes Cantiague in Hicksville, and Legislator Rose Marie Walker, helped pack up the supplies.

The drive runs until March 25, and boxes are located at Eisenhower Park, Wantagh Park, Christopher Morley Park, Grant Park, Nickerson Park, Cantiague Park and the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building. Food and clothing will no longer be accepted. However, there is a great need for medical supplies and personal care items for all ages. After the drive ends, the supplies from all the County parks will be delivered to the Polish Consulate, who will then send it to Europe.

“I am thrilled by the turnout for this Ukrainian relief drive,” Legislator Schaefer said. “Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. These supSee page 13

Arrested for burglary

A Hicksville man was arrested for allegedly entering a nearby home on March 20 and forcibly touching a female victim there.

According to Nassau County Police, Carlos Villeda, 58, illegally entered a home on East Street at 9:10 p.m. and allegedly began inappropriately grabbing and forcibly touched the female victim.

Police say Villeda was requested to leave, at which time he headed towards the front door. The victim then closed and locked the door behind him and called police. According to police, they located Villeda in front of a nearby residence on Park Avenue and was arrested.

He has been charged with Burglary 2nd Degree and Forcible Touching.

Free home COVID tests available at Town Hall The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that at-home COVID test kits are being distributed to residents on a first come, first serve basis at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. Residents are invited to visit the Town Clerk’s Office Walkup Windows weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay recently received a limited number of at-home COVID-19 test kits to share with our residents. While the threat of COVID-19 has dwindled, we felt it was very important to immediately distribute these kits to the community on a first-come, first-serve basis so

you have them readily available in your home.”

“We all know that testing is an essential component to combating COVID19,” Town Clerk LaMarca said. “These free at-home test kits should help make your life a little easier when feeling under the weather and wondering if you’ve been exposed to COVID. We’re happy to provide our residents with these kits to free-of-charge and wish you good health!”

Town Clerk Richard LaMarca’s Walkup Windows are open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay) and Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa).

Supermarket Bingo Last Hope Animal Rescue will be hosting a Supermarket Bingo night on Friday, April 1.

To the Editor: Jericho Cares is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that started in August of 2020. Our mission is to assist families in need. We provide clothes, celebrate birthdays and holidays, and help with food insecurities and other basic supplies.

Jericho Cares would like to formally thank the Jericho School District for their support. Denise Nash organized a toiletry drive for us with the teachers and staff, George A. Jackson Elementary School is participating in a cereal box domino challenge and will be donating the cereal boxes to us and the High School National Honor Society had a food drive for us. We have had so many

community members, staff, teachers and students reach out to us and ask how they can help. Experiencing the love and support that we have received has been wonderful and shows that Jericho is a great place to live and that Jericho does care. Thank you so much Mr. Grishman, Dr. Sherman, Central Administration, Board of Education, staff, teachers, students and community members.

Town announces sports programs for spring The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to take part in Spring Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, and volleyball, beginning on April 10 at the Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs run for 10 weeks, are co-ed, and open to individuals 18 and over.

“The Town’s athletic programs offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the court, improve their skills and make new friends,” said Town Councilman Steve Labriola. “These recreational programs are a great way to have fun and stay active, and I encourage residents to take advantage of these Town programs.”

Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and Sundays from 8:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., beginning on April 10, 2022. The Basketball program is 10 weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Registration is at the Hicksville Athletic (167 Broadway, Hicksville) on March 14, March 15, and March 16 between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Badminton will feature two sessions available for registrants to choose from.

The first session consists of Tuesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:05 p.m., Fridays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:05 p.m., and Sundays from 6:10 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. Session 2 consists of Tuesdays from 10:15 p.m. to 11:35 p.m., Fridays from 10:15 p.m. to

11:35 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents, with the program scheduled to begin on April 10.

Town offers one-stop passport weekend To help residents looking to obtain new passports, the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance in preparing their application,” said Town Clerk Richard LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport include: • One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

• Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization

Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

• Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

Paid internships available at Town of Oyster Bay The Town of Oyster Bay has announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience through an internship program being offered by the Town for the 2022 summer season.

“Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This federally-funded program compensates students at a rate of $18 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. Students will work 19.5 hours per week. The

program will operate June 2 through August 10. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North Hempstead-Glen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay. College students interested in internship opportunities must apply

by April 15. Applicants must submit a resume with their application, available at oysterbaytown.com/internship.

Congratulations to Hicksville Chamber Ensemble members Aidan Aguirre, Shirley Joo, Matthew LaBarca and Eli Yoo for their acceptance to the Long Island Regional Chamber Recital.

The recital, recently held at Great Neck South High School, is sponsored by the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center through the Young Musicians Program. It showcased advanced-level chamber players from string, vocal and wind ensembles.

Student ensembles were required to audition via video recording. The

Hicksville Chamber students were one of twelve ensembles performing from Nassau and Suffolk counties. Additionally, the four musicians received professional chamber coaching from Mihai Marica, a world-class cellist and member of the Chamber Music Society.

“We are very proud of their dedication, talent, and musicianship,” stated Jennifer Weiss, Hicksville orchestra teacher. “We look forward to their future performances."

Vincent J. D’Antone, a senior at General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public School District, was selected from a national pool of applicants to participate in the National Academy of Law and Justice in Washington, D.C., which presents an opportunity to explore studies related to law and justice.

While in D.C., Vincent met with the United States Capital Police, United States Secret Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency and many others. He participated in forensics courses at the International Spy Museum and

National Law Enforcement Museum.

The Academy also had courses in homeland security, constitutional law, modern policing issues and many other topics.

Students are selected to attend the Academy from a national application process that identifies students with a passion for law and justice, excellence in academics as well as leadership.

The National Academy is sponsored by the Law and Public Safety Education Network, a non-profit that supports educational programs nationwide.

Town launches pet food, supply drive The Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares from March 15 to April 15 with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

“Pets truly are members of our family,” said Town Councilwoman Laura Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.”

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.

“Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because

families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilwoman Maier. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”

classrooms for a day of reading. The activity served as an opportunity for students to come together as a school community and celebrate reading while building new relationships.

shoe boxes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes and construction paper, along with paint and glitter to design a house that is fit for a leprechaun. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, students were excited to construct green, glittery homes for these Irish fairies.

The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“We are pleased to partner with Trainville Hobby Depot, who coordi-

nates or participates in many hobby shows that benefit the fundraising efforts of a sponsoring organization,” said Councilman Hand. “Assisting groups that not only bring a fun and educational experience to residents of all ages, but also help preserve our history in understanding the railroad’s role in our heritage, is a great cause.”

Writers Workshop celebration at OCR Kindergarten co-teachers Ms. Lucy Vieco and Ms. Danielle Baker hosted a Writers’ Workshop Celebration in their room as students completed their Show and Tell Bend I Unit. Writers’ Workshop traditionally celebrate students’ writing by having the students share their work with those around them in their lives.

their special toys and shared their amazing sketches with personalized labeling. The pictures they drew inspired their writing about their special toy.

Students have grown this year from writing letters and words to full sentences. There surely could be a couple of future authors in this class!

Photo courtesy of Hicksville Public Schools Two Hicksville High School seniors, Daria Loor Macias and Lisdy Velasquez, have been selected to represent Long Island along with 20 other students from various districts at the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI).

Although three students received intense training, only two are able to represent us as a region. The third student, Rocio Contreras, is a PRHYLI substitute delegate and is eligible to participate again next year.

All three students have demonstrated true leadership in attending seven intense full-day virtual trainings exploring Civic Identities. They also collaborated and debated on current political issues and law proposal while maintaining excellent academic performance and conduct in and out of school.

Macias and Velasquez will participate in a virtual Mock Assembly debating actual bills that are on the assembly floor on the weekend of March 12 and

have been assigned to study, research and debate for or against a bill. They will also have the privilege of meeting local assembly men and women during the virtual institute.

“The overall purpose of this program is student empowerment,” said Janet Suarez-Lovett, Hicksville’s supervisor for world languages, ENL and bilingual programs. “I am very proud and excited for the opportunity this has given the students and would like to thank the teachers and school counselors who have encouraged and supported the students in this endeavor.”

The Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/ Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute is an innovative collaboration with the New York State Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force in conjunction with the annual SOMOS El Futuro conference, Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages and the New York State City Board of Education.

Train show to benefit Spring beach cleanup, leukemia society marine education expo The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to participate in the Spring Beach Cleanup and Marine Education Expo, scheduled for April 16 at the Town’s north shore beaches. The event, held rain or shine, is co-sponsored by Friends of the Bay. Beach cleanup volunteers – including individuals, groups, families and friends – should meet at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park (off Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay) beginning at 9 a.m.

“This great environmental cleanup initiative features volunteers and Town employees rolling up their sleeves and working side-by-side to remove litter and debris from the beaches and shoreline along our north shore,” Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “We invite residents of all ages to pitch in and help make a difference in our community! This year’s event will also feature new activities, exhibitions and a scavenger hunt for kids.”

Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting

place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. In prior years, beach cleanup events have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris collected by volunteers.

Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. A Stone’s Throw From Daytona Beach, Discovering ‘Florida As It Used To Be’

BY KAREN RUBIN TRAVEL FEATURES SYNDICATE GOINGPLACESFARANDNEAR.COM To be candid, I would not have traveled to Florida except for an opportunity to visit with family I hadn’t seen in quite some time.

Luckily, this is a mere week before Omnicron hit with such fury or was even a thing, but I still don’t feel Florida particularly appealing for a long list of reasons.

My destination is the immensely popular Daytona Beach area. Even though Omnicron has yet to hit, and though I am triple vaxxed, because of Florida’s contempt for preventive public health measures, I remain extremely vigilant in using a mask, staying outdoors as much as possible and avoiding crowds – even the wedding I attend is a small, intimate affair held outside.

Fortunately, the Ormond Beach area, a mere few miles north of Daytona Beach, and north along the famed A1A Highway, where, my cousin – a native Floridian – takes me, is the fabled “Real Florida,” and provides the perfect setting.

I stay in a delightful boutique hotel, the Lotus Inn, refurbished with chic touches (stunning pool, fire pit, landscaping), right on the beach, so that each morning, I can grab a cup of coffee from the lounge and walk out onto the beach before the sun rises, when the colors begin to burst in the sky.

Even though you can see Daytona Beach from Ormond Beach, the atmosphere here is completely dif-ferent. Here there are mostly low

And it seems the people are mostly locals and regulars – the fishermen, the bikers, the swimmers - who come to enjoy the splendor.

One of the regulars I meet is Jeffrey Dunne, who has come out every morning to photograph the sunrise for something like 10 years, with his friend who the seagulls know to come to for crackers each morning.

My first night in Ormond Beach, I drive my rental car the four miles down A1A to Daytona Beach and walk the charming boardwalk, really enjoying discovering the 1930s-era Bandstand, coming upon the boardwalk games, and then the long pier itself, alight in neon announcing Joe’s at the end, with a stunning view back at the shoreline. I also get a glimpse of the heart pounding, adrenaline pumping thrill rides at Screamer’s Park Now of course, Daytona Beach is

famous for auto racing and the Daytona 500 – that began on the beach (cars are still allowed in specific lanes, and plenty of people bike on the flat, hard sand, which became the International Speedway. I would venture that most who come are here are car people, and touring the speedway and visiting the Racing Hall of Fame are musts.

The Daytona International Speedway has just undergone a $400 million “reimagining” and transformed into a state-of-the-art motorsports facility.

You can even get behind the wheel of an actual race car with NASCAR Racing Experience and take laps around the world famous 2.5-mile Speedway. (“Speedway Tours” run multiple times each day; tour tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis, and include the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, https://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/tours/).

I stop by for a look at the gi-normous stadium, how it is banked at

a 30-degree angle so the cars don’t just fly off at the turns, but spend my time discovering what my cousin, Ray Weiss, a prize-winning journalist, calls “Florida as it used to be.”

Ray drives me up the famous A1A, to Ormond by the Sea up to Flagler Beach, which cannot be more un-touristy. Here, he stresses, you can still park your car alongside the two-lane road (they call it a highway), on a patch of sand bordered with sea grass, and walk right onto the beach – such a contrast to Daytona Beach, which seems to be competing to have as many high rises and parking meters as Miami Beach. (My cousin describes Daytona Beach perfectly: “a bit of an Atlantic City feel with a redneck flair.”)

This stretch between Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach, though, it is exactly as he has described it and what he cherishes – there are the colorful, weatherworn, funky beach places, miles of undeveloped open beach (vacant of people) and thousands of acres of pristine land called the Loop - woods, water and marshland. “It’s like stepping back in time to what the rest of Florida once looked like when the Seminoles were here,” he says. He should know because my first memory as a child was visiting his family in old Miami and seeing Seminole Indians wrestling alligators.

We drive up to Flagler Beach, a Florida town that is seems stuck in the 1950s. No high-rises here, only modest houses on the beach. He points out several old style restaurants, stopping at Snack Jack’s right Continued on next page

Back in Ormond Beach, we stop to visit The Casements, John D. Rockefeller’s 1890s winter home, so beautifully set on the river.

On my own, I also discover some of the attractions that make actually living here wonderful – starting with the Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS).

When I arrive, I ask the receptionist what is special, what should I definitely look out for. She replies, “Well, we have the biggest collection of Coca Cola bottles, and a skeleton of a giant sloth.”

Walking into the Coca-Cola collection, you can’t help but let out an actual “wow”– it turns out that the guy who invented and manufactured that classic glass Coke bottle in Indiana, Chapman J. Root (he got 5c royalty on every bottle sold), also had interests in Coca-Cola bottling plants in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois and Florida and when he retired, his grandson Chapman S. Root moved the company, in 1951, to Daytona Beach.

Over a 50-year period, Chapman S. Root collected 100,000 objects that make up the $5 million Root Family Museum collection – probably the largest of Coca-Cola memorabilia – housed within MOSA. (See: Orlando Sentinel, For Coke Fans, Collection is ‘The Real Thing’) Then I walk into the exhibit of nat-

ural Florida, and there it is. When you think of “sloth” you might think of Sid in the “Ice Age” movies. Now imagine The Hulk but probably three or four times the size. The skeleton of the Eremotherium – the largest sloth to have ever existed - that we see assembled in its fearsome pose was collected just 2 ½ miles away. It would have weighed up to five tons and stood 15 feet tall – only the Wooly Mammoth was larger in the Western Hemisphere.

The rest of the museum has some fabulous, unexpected and eclectic collections – African tribal artifacts including incredible masks, Chinese art, and the American decorative arts collection of Anderson Child Bouchelle. I especially love “the warehouse” where you can peek at treasures that otherwise would be stored away. (352 South Nova Road, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114, 386-2550285, www.moas.org/visit/index) Before leaving, I follow the Nature Trail that starts just outside the museum that takes you on a boardwalk into the jungle (note the sign that warns of such creatures as snakes and alligators).

The next day, after my ritual beach walk to revel in the daily miracle of the sunrise, I go off to two other signature attractions, both very close together at the southern tip of the barrier island.

The modest but intimate Marine Science Center, is mainly an aquarium but also is where you can see its medical

facilities where sea turtles are being restored to health (you can even watch operations through a glass) and a sanctuary for rescued birds. The small area is packed with fun things to look at, interact with and learn about Volusia County’s rich marine life – like how they are re-growing (not just restoring) coral so crucial to the survival of ecosystems. This is a delight for families with children (100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet, Fl 32127, 386-304-5545, www.marinesciencecenter.com) The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, constructed in 1887, is a treasure. At 175 feet tall, the lighthouse itself is the highest in Florida and second highest in the country. You can walk up all 203 steps winding around and around, and step out for a 360-degree view. Most interesting are the other structures and buildings – all original - you can visit and the exhibits that show the life and times of the lighthouse keepers and wonderful videos showing the history. In the Ayres Davies Lens Exhibit Building, you can see a world-class Fresnel lens collection.

There is also an exhibit of Cuban Rafts that carried refugees trying to make their way to freedom on these fragile homemade boats and rafts. (4931 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet, FL 32127, 386-761-1821, ponceinlet.org) The next day, I visit the extraordinary Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, which is on the same campus

as MOAS. This is the most astonishing find of all. Since 1997, the Browns made a mission of collecting art representing Florida. After being a traveling exhibit for some time, what is the largest collection of Florida art is now housed in this stunning, brand new two-level structure. Most impressive are the way the paintings are selected, framed, how they are hung together, and the absolutely fascinating notes that accompany each and every one – not only a biography of the artist, but the context for the painting, something of history, and then really fascinating notes that are like a painting tutorial. Vegetable Garden Seed Question

Q: Can you suggest a way to buy good vegetable seeds? I can’t afford to get a lot of plants, so I buy seeds. There are several brands at each store, and I don’t know which will grow best for me. I always seem to have low success rates because of disease problems.

A: Plant varieties that have won an All-America Selections award should do well. Only the entries with the highest nationwide average score are considered to be worthy of a national AAS Award. Some vegetable varieties grow better in a hot, dry climate while others prefer a cool, humid region. The country is divided into six regions, and a variety that grows best in a specific climate might win one or more regional AAS awards. Vegetables are judged for such traits as earliness to harvest, total yield, fruit taste, fruit quality, ease of harvest, plant habit and disease and pest resistance.

When you see the red, white and blue logo of All-America Selections on seed packets, bedding plant tags or in catalogs, you can expect that plant to do well in your garden. Even AAS winners from several years ago are more likely to prove

successful than nonwinners. They have had to do well at test sites all across the continent to win, and to do that they have to have some disease resistance.

Another good designation to look for on the label is “F1 hybrid”. This signifies a cross that is usually very vigorous and produces the most flowers or fruit. One of the best ways to cut down on the use of pesticides in the garden is to use varieties of plants that are resistant to insects and disease. Each year new varieties are released, so check the seed package label for information.

At first glance, the information on a vegetable seed package can be confusing.

In reality, by reading the package, you will become an expert on that plant. The first thing you will notice is the picture. If it is a food, then the edible part is shown, and if it is an ornamental then the pretty part is pictured.

If the plant has any special disease resistance, it will be mentioned. Tomatoes that are resistant to fusarium will have a letter F behind the name, and as there is more than one kind of fusarium resistance, there may be more than one F, or it may be listed as F1, F2 and so on. Toma-

toes can also be resistant to verticillium wilt (V), nematodes (N), tobacco mosaic virus (T) and alternaria (A).

The package will describe the best methods of growing the seeds. It will say where and when the seeds should be direct sown into the garden or started earlier indoors. It will list the proper temperature in each of these situations. It will tell you at what depth to plant the seeds, the proper spacing and if the seeds need to be exposed to light or dark conditions for best germination. The number of days it takes for the seeds to germinate may be listed.

The number of days to harvest after planting seeds or small plants in the garden will be listed.

There may be a map on the package describing the best time to plant and grow the vegetables in your region. It may list how many days before or after the last frost date the seeds need to be sown in the spring, and how many days before or after the first frost date that the seeds need to be sown in the fall.

If the plant is an F1 hybrid, the seeds grown from this plant will not duplicate the parents. If the package states the plant is open-pollinated, it may have an OP on

the label. If the package states that the plant is an heirloom variety or that it is open-pollinated, it will come back true to type year after year from the seeds collected by the gardener. F1 hybrids will not come back true to type from seeds collected by the gardener.

Carrying a Social Security Grudge for Years

BY TOM MARGENAU I’m always amazed by the number of emails I get from people who have been getting benefits for 10 years, or 20 years, or even more -- and now they are coming to me with questions about their benefit amount. Or to be more precise, they are telling me some version of this lament: “I think I’ve been paid incorrectly for all these years!”

I think what’s going on is this.

They’ve probably always had nagging doubts about their Social Security benefit. And over the years, they’ve just sort of grudgingly accepted the fact that they are most likely being paid correctly. But then one day, they see this Social Security column in their newspaper and the columnist (that would be me) says he’ll answer people’s questions about Social Security. So, they fire off an email to me, venting their years-long, sometimes decades-long frustrations, hoping against hope that I will be able to fix their perceived problems.

Of course, that’s not going to happen.

I’m just an old retired Social Security guy sitting in his basement writing a weekly column. I have no access to Social Security records, so it’s not like I’m going to say, “I’ve checked your files and it turns out you have been underpaid for all these years. I’ll see that corrections are made, and we’ll send you a back-pay check.” And even if I did have access to Social Security files, I would almost assuredly come back to them and say, “I’ve checked your records and you are getting the proper Social Security benefit.” And why do I know that?

Because countless studies have been done by oversight agencies and they always show that Social Security benefits are paid with a remarkable level of accuracy.

So anyway, that’s the message I usually deliver to these “grudge-niks.” But it usually doesn’t mollify them. They’ve told themselves for years that they’re being cheated out of benefits, and a simple statement from me telling them they are being paid correctly isn’t going to change their minds.

However, at least sometimes I can explain some Social Security rule to them that they didn’t know about that might help them understand why I know they are being paid correctly. The rest of this column will include some examples of that.

Q: I am 85 years old. My husband is 89. He’s been getting benefits since he was 65 and I’ve been getting benefits since age 62. I’ve been told all these years that a wife gets half of the husband’s Social Security. But I get nowhere near that. So, I think I’ve been cheated out of what’s rightfully mine for 23 years now. Can you help me fix this?

A: There is nothing to fix. A wife is

due the 50% spousal rate if she waited until her full retirement age to claim benefits. But you said you took benefits at 62. And if you do that, the spousal rate is more like 30%. And I bet that’s what you’re getting.

Q: I’m 91 years old. I started my Social Security in 1993. Back then, they knocked about 50% off of my Social Security check because they said I’m a so-called “double-dipper.” I get a pension from the police department where I worked for 30 years. I just know this is wrong and unfair.

Can you get that 50% back for me?

A: I’m sure you are being paid correctly. Your Social Security benefit is being reduced by something called the “windfall elimination provision.” I’ve discussed WEP dozens of times in past columns over the years, and it takes a whole column to explain the intricacies of the law. So, there is no way I can give you a thorough explanation in the space I have here. In a nutshell, the Social Security benefit formula is skewed to give lower income workers a higher benefit rate. On the SSA’s books, you look like a low-paid worker because you spent all those years with the police force (a job where Social Security taxes were not withheld from your paychecks). The WEP formula simply pays you at the same rate that all other middle-income people in the country get.

If you’d like a much better explanation, spend 10 bucks and get my book, “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” It includes a whole chapter on WEP. Q: I am 101 years old. That’s right. I’m 101! And for 40 years now, I’ve been cheated out of Social Security benefits because I was born in the “notch years.” I read your recent column in which you told people like me that we are being paid correctly.

That’s bull! The government has ripped off all of us “notch babies” and I’ll go to my grave convinced of that!

A: That’s really too bad. But in a way, I can understand. For four decades now, you’ve told yourself that you’ve been cheated. And I’m sure you can go online and find websites that reinforce your beliefs. And now along comes this young whippersnapper (well, make that a 72-year-old whippersnapper) who tells you that the government didn’t cheat you out of anything and that you have been getting the proper Social Security amount all these years.

As with the WEP issue mentioned in the prior Q&A, it would take me a whole column to explain this so-called “notch” business. For those of you interested, I’ve got a new book coming out this year called “Social Security: 100 Myths and 100 Facts.” The “notch” is one of the myths explained in that book.

Finally, I must make this one crucial point. The time to question your bene-

fit amount is when your benefits start.

When that happens, you get an official “award letter” from the Social Security Administration. If you think there is a problem, the letter tells you that you have 60 days to file an appeal of their benefit decision. So, file that appeal then. Don’t wait for 20 or 30 years and then write a letter to a columnist asking him to fix the unfixable.

Finding the ‘Dinky Dipper’

BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of March 20-26, 2022 Pay attention to your everyday world and you’ll soon realize that we’re surrounded by astronomical words.

The days of the week are named after the five visible planets, the sun and the moon. Go to a theater and you may see a film by Orion Pictures, or stay home and listen to SiriusXM radio.

Much of our popular culture -- from Polaris submarines to Beetlejuice (aka Betelgeuse), the zany character played

by Michael Keaton -- have names that originate in the stars.

Automobile names are no exception: Taurus, Saturn, Nova, Astro, Mercury, Eclipse and Subaru.

Subaru?

Yes, indeed! In historical Japanese sky lore, Subaru represents the Pleiades, one of the most noticeable star clusters in the sky. To see this tiny, shimmering cluster -- also known as the Seven Sisters -- simply go outdoors after dark this week and look high in the western sky. Of course, you can also see the Pleiades in broad daylight as well... just wander around any parking lot and check out the emblems on the front of the cars until you spot it!

In Western culture, the name “Pleiades” is believed to derive from the Greek word meaning “to sail,” because when the grouping was seen to rise just before the sun, it was a sign of the opening of the navigational season in the Mediterranean world. In Greek mythology, these stars represented the

seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione and were pursued relentlessly by the great hunter Orion.

Eastern culture, however, saw it quite differently. Much of the Subaru myth arrived in Japan from China, and the term may have Buddhist roots.

The word is generally thought to mean “united” or “getting together”. The Chinese character for Subaru (kanji) also has connotations of being “bright,” and so the “bright” Subaru stars seem to “get together in one place.”

Over time, the lore was modified for local religious customs, or planting and fishing seasons. For example, in some farming regions, the stars of Subaru were seen as seeds, and their rising with the springtime sun signaled a time for planting. In some coastal areas, Japanese fishermen saw a fishing net made of stones and bamboo (Sumaru), and similarly used the rising and setting of this bright “net” to determine when to cast their own nets into the sea.

As in Western lore, the Japanese often saw seven stars instead of six in Subaru. Travelers to Japan may be familiar with Shichifukujin (literally “seven happy gods”), and locals in some areas still call the Pleiades “Shichifukujin”.

Imaginary lines connecting the stars of Subaru enable Japanese stargazers to outline such things as a strainer (Kozaru), a rather square sake cup (Masuboshi) pouring out rice wine, and even something resembling a person’s elbow joint (Tsutokkoboshi).

Many people looking into that part of the sky today insist that the stars of the Pleiades outline the Little Dipper.

Not so, of course; at this time of year, the Little Dipper hangs down from Polaris, and is considerably larger than this cluster.

But so many people see a dipper

there that I’ve decided to designate the Pleiades as the third and least famous of the Dippers: the “Dinky Dipper.”

The Eyelashes Have It

I stared down at the package of false eyelashes lying innocuously on my bathroom counter. I’d be lying if I said they didn’t look like two creepy spiders, vacuum-sealed in plastic. Nevertheless, they were certainly feathery and lush, and longer than my eyelashes, so I figured that, spiders or not, I was going to figure out how to glue them on my eyelids if it killed me.

Just as an aside, I had not arbitrarily decided to torture myself. I had gotten an invitation to a big, fancy event and immediately knew I was going to have to step up my usual makeup routine to fit in. I pondered my options and decided this might be the perfect opportunity to try out false eyelashes.

I smartly thought it would make sense to practice a few times before the event so that I didn’t end up accidental-

ly gluing them to my forehead. I went out and got five different lashes to try and brought them home for my Great False Eyelash Experiment. I figured, best-case scenario, I would become a bona-fide false eyelash pro, go to my event and have everyone swoon over my long and lustrous lashes. Worstcase scenario, they would fall off and stick to my upper lip and everyone would call me Groucho for the night.

In an effort to learn from my mistakes, I decided to keep a journal of my eyelash efforts.

Day One: For my first application, I thought I should try them out on someone other than myself, just to get the hang of it.

Conclusion: The dog looks amazing with false eyelashes.

Day Two: I took the next leap and tried them on myself. I did not do such

a great job with the eyelashes, but I did master the fine art of gluing one eye shut. This actually takes a great deal more talent than one would think.

Helpful tip: Have an eye patch on hand so you can disguise your mistake by pretending to be a pirate for a day.

Day Three: I got both eyelashes on both eyelids but forgot to trim them to normal proportions and looked like there were caterpillars on both eyes. I realized this when my husband tried to swat them off my face.

Day Four: I managed to get them on correctly and decided to take them out for a trial run. But I noticed that people at the store kept looking at me really strangely. When I got home, I looked in the mirror and saw that one of my false eyelashes had migrated up to my eyebrow.

Conclusion: Beautiful, long eyelash-

es: pretty. Freakishly long eyebrow: not so much.

Day Five: My false eyelashes stayed in the right place for the whole day, and I even slept in them to really test out their staying power. But one fell off during the night and scared the heck out of me the next morning when I woke up and thought there was a dead centipede on my pillow.

Conclusion: False eyelashes are stupid, and I should focus on what’s really important in life: Eyebrows.

Pecans give these cookies extra appeal

genus of trees, pecans are not truly nuts, but drupes. A drupe is a fruit with a single stone or pit surrounded by a husk. With pecans, the outer husk dries out and splits open, exposing the “nuts” inside.

Georgia, New Mexico and Texas are the leading domestic producers of pecans, but Mexico grows nearly half of the world’s pecans. Pecans are heart-healthy and rich in antioxidants, several vitamins and minerals, and a good source of healthy fat. In addition, one ounce of pecans provides 10 percent of the recommended daily fiber intake.

Cookies may never be considered “health food,” but there are ways to make them more nutritious. The addition of beneficial ingredients like pecans can do just that.

This recipe for “Cowboy Cookies” from “Live Well, Bake Cookies” (Rock Point) Pecans are tasty offerings that are ideal by Danielle Rye includes oats, pecans and in both savory dishes and desserts. Like coconut in the mixture, adding flavor and fruits of other members of the hickory nutritional appeal.

Cowboy Cookies Makes 50 to 52 cookies 2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup packed light brown sugar 2⁄3 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 11⁄2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 3⁄4 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1 cup chopped pecans (see baking tip) 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined. Stir in the old-fashioned rolled oats and set aside.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar together for 1 to 2 minutes, or until well combined.

3. Mix in the eggs, one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract until fully combined,

making sure to stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

4. Mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, then mix in the chocolate chips, shredded coconut and chopped pecans on low speed until fully incorporated.

5. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

6. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.

7. Using a 11⁄2-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one. Gently press each ball of cookie dough down to slightly flatten it.

8. Bake for 10 to 13 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are set and the edges are lightly browned. Remove from the oven, and allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 to 10 minutes, then carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

9. Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Baking tip: For even more flavor, try toasting the pecans. Just cool them completely before adding them to the cookie dough.

Summer lifeguards needed at town pools, beaches The Town of Oyster Bay is seeking individuals who are interested in working as lifeguards for local pools and beaches. The Town is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in lifeguarding positions at Tappen Beach and Pool in Glenwood Landing, as well as beach facilities in Bayville and Oyster Bay (Centre Island, Ransom, Stehli, and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park), as well as Philip B. Healey Beach in Massapequa, for the

upcoming summer season.

“Our lifeguards provide an invaluable service in protecting residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters,” said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino.

“The Town lifeguarding staff has a tremendous sense of dedication and understanding of integrity, accountability, and the importance of teamwork.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial

Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at all Town pools and beaches.

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Qualified applicants may apply in person at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa.

The Olympic ideals of sportsmanship and fair play were emphasized and displayed by all competitors.

Town launches “Art in the Park” initiative The Town of Oyster Bay invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new “Art in the Park” program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods. Applications are now available for the event, which will be held on Saturday, May 21 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in this great opportunity to showcase their items,” said Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Michele Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.”

and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted.

Levittown middle schools send out positivity

Students and staff from Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School discussed mental wellness during the Waves of Positivity event.

Students in grades 6–8 from Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School hosted Waves of Positivity on March 7, an event aimed at promoting mental well-being and healthy habits.

The evening consisted of a series of workshops that provided students many opportunities to explore ways to be mindful, raise awareness of mental wellness and meet social-emotional needs. Fun was had by students and staff while learning how to handle stress and anxiety in positive, meaningful ways. From the workshops to hands-on experiences and thought-provoking conversations, all visitors walked away feeling happy and connected to one another.

Twelfth grade students from General Douglas MacArthur High School and Division Avenue High School were

instrumental in getting middle school students in the mindset to create vision boards while English teachers Ms. Casey and Ms. Cai discussed the art of journaling to get in touch with one’s emotions.

Ms. Miceli and Mrs. Williams, school social workers, provided a Brain Power Workshop for students to understand the way their brains work and provided hands-on Mood Boosting stations for students to get ideas on how to relieve stress-induced feelings using their five senses. Ms. Bronstein and Ms. Pagnotta, also school social workers, gave students suggestions on breathing techniques to use when they feel anxious, while Ms. Rosenblum taught the students how to make bracelets from hand-made paper beads created in Kenya with her Reason2Smile program.

Students at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District partnered up with Birthday Wishes, a local charitable organization that creates birthday celebrations for homeless children, for their January Community Service Project.

Together as a school community, a wide range of birthday boxes were created for homeless children. The boxes were filled with all the ingredients for a festive party, including decorations, paper goods, a gift and more.

The Lee Road Community Service students and Student Council students made daily announcements, which inspired the whole school to get involved. In the end, students’ hard work helped the project surpass its goal of birthday boxes created.

The President’s List is an academic distinction reserved for Bryant’s highest achievers who earn a GPA of 4.0 or better for at least 12 semester hours of work. n

Kelli Heffer of Bethpage was one of more than 130 Lebanon Valley College student-athletes to be named to the Middle Atlantic Conference’s (MAC) Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Heffer, a gradute of Plainedge High School, is a member of the Lebanon Valley College volleyball team, and is pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise science at The Valley.

The academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity-level sport and registered a term/ semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher. n

Forty-eight medical students from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) were inducted into the medical school’s Sigma Sigma Phi chapter, including the following local students: Benna Jacob from Plainview Kimberly Fasciglione from Hicksville Rahul Anand from Hicksville Michael Savallo from Bethpage Sigma Sigma Phi is the national osteopathic medicine honors fraternity for medical students training to become Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).
