Jericho vax site sees rise as COVID cases increase BY GEORGE HABER The outbreak of Covid variants and the spike in the number of Covid cases on Long Island have helped spark an increase in residents visiting the New York State “mass vax” site at SUNY Old Westbury off Rt. 107 in Jericho. While specific numbers are hard to come by, workers at the site say they are seeing increased numbers of individuals and families visiting the site for their first shot or booster shot since the summer. ‘It’s obvious that the number has been growing,” said one staffer who noted that no appointments are needed
to obtain the vaccination. “Some people are making appointments,” he said. “But many realize that appointments are not necessary.” A recent weekday morning visit revealed dozens of vacant parking spaces, whereas at other state sites, such as at the Javits Center in Manhattan, parking is often difficult to find, even in parking lots. “In the summer” said Elinor Grumet of Jericho, “I went without an appointment to get a booster shot and was done in about twenty minutes. The place had very little traffic in the morning. I See page 8
Jericho Love and the Syosset chapter of Lasagna Love joined forces on Sunday, December 19 to give warm winter clothes and other items away to local residents in need this holiday season. BY GARY SIMEONE When the Jericho Cares nonprofit organization teamed up with the “Lasagna Love” Syosset’s chapter last year, it meant that more needy families would have food on their tables and clothes on their back. “When we teamed up with Lasgana Love about a year ago, we were able to
add twenty additional hot meals to our menu to help families who are dealing with food insecurity on Long Island,” said Fran O’Connor, president of Jericho Cares. “Now every Saturday when we do our deliveries, we can give families items like lasagna, mac and cheese, meatloaf dishes.
