In Syosset local professionals, students align to explore careers BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker (far left) and County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (center) present a citation to Dr. Uzma Syed (left) and her husband Faisal Zakaria (right) and the board of directors for local nonprofit Align Us.
With 60 area high school students and their families gathered Monday night at the public library, several Syosset, Woodbury and Jericho community members displayed their volunteer spirit and an interest in helping young people develop “college and career readiness” through the groundbreaking new Syosset-based nonprofit, Align Us, and its innovative student mentorship program slated to begin in late January. The president of Align Us is Dr. Uzma Syed, a double board-certified physician specializing in infectious disease and internal medicine; a graduate of Syosset High School, a mother of two children in the Syosset Central School district and a two-time candidate for the board of education. Dr. Syed is also a member of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce, and in September along with community members, her colleagues and staff she celebrated the grand opening of her office, South Shore Infectious Disease & Travel Medicine Consultants at 60 Queens Street, blocks from the Jackson Avenue downtown Syosset business hub. Dr. Syed’s mother is known among community members and business people around the Jackson Avenue/Underhill Boulevard as for 32 years, she’s worked at the former Astoria Federal Savings Bank, now Sterling National Bank ‘downtown.’ Uzma Syed attended Syosset’s Village Elementary followed by South Woods Middle School and then Syosset High. Throughout childhood Syed enjoyed reading and learning at Syosset Public Library, and many summer days with friends at Syosset Woodbury Community Park. Jericho teachers get shaved for a worthwhile cause BY GARY SIMEONE
After a month’s worth of beard growing, a group of Jericho teachers and administrators got a clean shave on Friday, November 30th. The event was a culmination of ‘No Shave November,’ where participants actively forgo shaving and grooming in order to raise cancer awareness. Victor Manuel, Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs, was one of the participants in the event, which took place in the Middle School’s main lobby. “We raised over $7,000 for cancer research and pre-
vention this year,” said Manuel, who was one of twenty-five teachers and administrators who participated. “It was a wonderful event that was put together by our School Superintendent, (Henry) Grishman.” He said that cancer is a disease that affects many people and families, and that any money raised to aid in awareness and prevention is a positive thing. “Many of us know someone who is stricken by the disease, whether it’s an acquaintance, friend or family member. To have such a personal connection to the cause, it really was a fun thing to be a part of.” Ten students from the Nassau BOCES Barbering
Technician program, trimmed off the beards, goatees and mustaches of the participants to the delight of onlookers. Bill Ferro, President of the Board of Education, said he was glad to his beard trimmed after letting it grow for over a month. “We are one big happy family here getting shaved today,” said Ferro. “But it was starting to really itch. It was time to let it go,” said Ferro. For more information on No Shave November, you can visit their website at no-shave.org
