Town offers Holiday Lighting event planned winter athletic programs BY RIKKI MASSAND
A much-anticipated downtown Syosset tradition will be restored as 2021 winds down. The Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to attend the upcoming Holiday Lighting Spectacular, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 12. This holiday event will take place at Sterling Bank’s parking lot, just north of the Syosset LIRR train station at 50 Jackson Avenue. The lot is owned by Plaza Realty Properties, as executive Jack Biondo and his wife Jennifer Biondo are the Christmas Tree sponsors for the Holiday Lighting Spectacular. Home Depot of Syosset generously donated new LED lights as the company is the 2021 Tree Light sponsor; the Light Installation & Removal sponsor is Syosset-based Season to Season Maintenance. The iSchool of Music + Art located at is this year’s Stage Production sponsor, as the Holiday Lighting Spectacular returns to pre-pandemic form with music and dance performances. Santa Claus will arrive with lights and sirens in the bucket of the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department’s ladder truck. At the conclusion of the performances on stage, word from the North Pole (and the chamber event organizers) is that the Fire Department will escort Santa to light the tree downtown. Rabbi Jay Weinstein of Congregation Simchat HaLev Faith, Lutheran Church’s Pastor Rebecca Sheridan and Father Michael Maffeo, pastor St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church, have been invited to offer prayer at the event. Russell P. Green, a 22-year resident of Syosset and the president of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce, advised, “After dealing with the pandemic for 18 months, I am proud that the Chamber of Commerce is able to help our community come together and show that we are still here, stronger than ever. That happened at our Street Fair in September, and I anticipate a large turnout again for the Holiday Lighting on December 12th.”
The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to take part in Winter Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, volleyball, pilates, yoga, and fitness classes beginning on January 2 at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center.
