Syosset HS honors student athletes at Commitment Day
Back-to-back: Business students win challenge for second straight year BY RIKKI MASSAND On Friday, November 12 nine Syosset High School business students competed in, and finished in first place in the Adelphi University Apprentice Challenge, a marketing competition with teams of participants from 25 high schools across Long Island. Syosset High’s Kyle Dapice, Riddhi Parthuessary, Brittany Shi, Lauren Rogers, Jialiang (Jacob) Cheng, Ivy Xu, Aany Bhatia, Julietta Roselli and Alexandra Rosenberg made up the Business team at the Adelphi Apprentice Challenge. With their achievement, Syosset’s 9 students will be given awards by both L’Oréal and Adelphi University. The various high school teams were tasked with creating a marketing plan for L’Oréal that incorporates the launch of a new product that falls in line with its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) goals. Syosset High School celebrated its student-athletes at the high school’s annual Athlete Commitment Day on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Two dozen of Syosset’s most distinguished student-athletes committed to play their respective sports at the collegiate level during a ceremony held outside on the multipurpose artificial
turf field. Syosset Director of Athletics, PE and Recreation Drew Cronin and boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria hosted the annual event attended by family, administration, faculty and coaches. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers, along with the students’ coaches, commended the student-athletes on their character, ded-
ication and achievement and recognized the students’ families for supporting them throughout their journey to becoming a collegiate athlete. “We have a tremendous athletic department and topnotch athletes. Teen speaks at United Nations climate conference BY GARY SIMEONE Sabrina Guo, a Syosset High School junior, had the honor of recently speaking at COP26 (UN Climate Change Conference)that took place earlier this month. The precocious teenager had entered an international poetry competition called ‘Poems to Solve the Climate Crisis Challenge’ in response to the conference’s theme of preserving nature. She also gave a short speech through a virtual platform to over 30,000 people in attendance at the event. “This global contest was administered by The Poetry Society of UK’s global Young Poets Network in partnership with People Need Nature,” said Guo. “ I’m the youngest global winner and was invited to speak out against climate injustice and perform my winning poetry at the Climate Change Conference at Glasgow, UK, on November 6th, during a COP26 showcase called Where Were You When the Seas Were Warming.” She said that winners of the contest who were living outside of See page 10
