ing the annual Holiday Tree Lighting and Celebration on Jackson Avenue, just north of the Syosset LIRR station. which is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, starting at 3:30 p.m. At Stretch Lab last Thursday, Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce President Charo Ezdrin presented Chris Tucker with an official citation from New York State Senator Jim Gaughran from the 5th Senate district, which covers parts of the North Shore of Long Island
In what has become a sign of the times, literally, a video recently surfaced of a man removing campaign party signs and replacing it with a sign for other candidates in Bethpage. The sign being removed was for George Hignell, a Democratic candidate who is running for Receiver of Taxes in the Town of Oyster Bay. The signs were than replaced with ones for Joseph Saladino, who is running for re-election as Town Supervisor and current Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato, who is running against Hignell for Receiver of Taxes. Surveillance video shows the incident taking place at a 7-Eleven convenience store on Stewart Avenue on Tuesday, October 15. Brendan Brosh, a spokesperson for the Nassau District Attorney, Madeline Singas, confirmed that the DA's office was looking into the incident and said, “I can confirm that we received a complaint and we are reviewing it.” A spokesperson from the Nassau County Police Department also confirmed that they had taken a police report about the destruction of the signs. George Hignell, a longtime resident of Bethpage, said he does not condone the sign stealing and chalked it up to, "acts of hooliganism." “As fast as we put these signs up, they seem to disappear at the same rate,” said the 63-year-old Hignell, who is running for his first four year term. “This past month, wherever I put the signs, within a day they're gone.” He added that the owner of the 7-Eleven was a personal friend of his and had given him permission to place the signs on the property. Hignell said that if he were to be elected in November, his priorities include increased use of electronic communication to help people with their taxes, and to modernize the current online payment systems so residents can pay taxes using systems such as Venmo and PayPal instead of writing checks. “During tax season, I would like to open the tax receiver's office on Saturdays, so working people wouldn't have to take time off so they could pay their taxes," said Hignell.
