Syosset Central School District is proud to announce that 13 Syosset High School students have been named Semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students qualified for this distinction by scoring among the highest in the state on the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Congratulations to seniors Sabrina Chen, Ethan Chiu, Rohan Ghotra, Alex He, Caro-
line Hsu, Vivien Huang, Yuni Kim, Christine Ling, David Liu, Shivaangi Salhotra, David Wang, Wesley Zhou and Caroline Zhu. They are among the approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide who were named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), representing less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors. Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante congratulated the students saying,
“We are so proud of our National Merit Semifinalists for all of their accomplishments, both in their classrooms and in the Syosset community.” The Semifinalists have qualified to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit scholarships totaling approximately $30 million. Finalists will be announced in February 2022, with the National Merit Scholars to be named later in the spring.

On Tuesday, September 21, the Jericho School District received yet another prestigious national honor as Jericho High School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School (NBRS) by the U.S. Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon School distinction is conferred annually by the Department, and Jericho School District previously was honored with NRBS ranking, as Cantiague Elementary School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012. For 2021, JHS is one of the 325 schools as stated by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona. Following the news, on Tuesday afternoon School Board Trustee Jennifer Vartanov said, “I could not be more proud of Jericho High School, its outstanding teachers and staff, and most importantly, our students, who now have earned the honor of receiving the Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education. Jericho will always strive to provide a world-class education to its students, while prioritizing their safety, health, and mental well-being. Each person involved in this success is deserving of applause.” Tuesday’s announcement follows years of accolades and top schools’ listings in U.S. News & World Report, real estate websites and publications like WalletHub and Niche.com, and many other reports on the rankings, including a longtime title of being the No. 1 school district in New York State and at times, the nation. Five other Long Island high schools to receive the distinction of being on the 2021 NBRS list include North Shore Senior High School; Sanford H Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District; Commack High School; Robert M. Grable Jr. Mount Sinai High School and Lawrence Union Free School District’s Rambam Mesivta High School. The National Blue Ribbon Schools program was instituted in 1982 by the U.S. Department of Education. The award celebrates “great American schools, schools demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels.” The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed more than 10,000 awards to over 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years. The Education Department will formally recognize the 302 public and 23 private schools at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. scheduled for November 4 and 5, 2021.
