Florida man arrested for trying to steal Bentley

Nassau County Police arrested an Orlando, Florida man on August 22nd for allegedly trying to steal a 2015 Bentley from a local car dealership by presenting forged documents. According to detectives, James Gibson, 39, , while at Bespoke Motor Group, 115 South Service Road, attempted to pick up a 2015 Bentley val-

ued at $135,000 that was previously purchased through a broker via a “Sign & Drive” agreement. After becoming suspicious about his identity, the company president called police. Police say Gibson was found to be in possession of a fraudulent New Jersey license in the name of the intended buyer, a fraudulent American Express

credit card and a fraudulent Florida driver’s license. Gibson was charged with Attempted Grand Larceny 2nd Degree, Forgery 2nd Degree, three counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree, Falsifying Business Records 1st Degree and two counts of Identity Theft 1st Degree.

During a Town Hall meeting in late July, North Shore residents spoke with New York State Senator Jim Gaughran about environmental impacts of over-development and the issues caused by increased condominium housing, lesser-used shopping centers and parking lots that have reduced green spaces, trees and natural environment. Gaughran, who represents the 5th district on the North Shore, from Glen Cove to Huntington, advised that land use and development on Long Island and other nearby suburbs of the megapolis New York, including Westchester, upstate towns, most of Connecticut and New Jersey have faced issues related to zoning laws, managing demand for development and how one municipality’s development changes planning, layouts and lifestyles of its neighbors. “Long Island’s history of environmental protection and zoning is impossible. As a Town of Huntington Board member I wrote a lot of laws dealing with upzoning, and one involving critical water recharge areas. I wrote the Clean Drinking Water Protection Act, co-sponsored with my colleague Steve Engelbright (State Assemblyman for the 4th District of New York) who was in the legislature then as we purchased the central

Pine Barrens and a lot of critical watershed areas. But ultimately it is local governments -- Towns and Villages -- that make decisions as they have the zoning authorities and planning boards, zoning boards, village boards and town boards themselves that can amend the zoning ordinances and we also have the Nassau County Planning Commission which has some authority,” he said. Senator Gaughran is chair of the New York State Senate’s Local Government Committee which he said gives him responsibilities of laws dealing with municipalities -towns, villages and counties -- and it offers insight into individual rights and decision-making powers municipalities have. A resident posed a question to Gaughran on July 30 about potential for maintaining open space on Long Island. Several people in attendance expressed concerns over devastating the habitats of wildlife along North Shore communities bordering the Long Island Sound, as well as the impacts on residential quality of life. Concerns over the potential for Long Island’s many golf courses to undergo new assessments are related to what could happen with remaining open spaces and environs as green spaces, even if manicured and maintained to See page 13
