Jericho students from K-12, as well as all staff and faculty, will be required to wear masks this fall, and in-person learning will resume for all students, announced Jericho Superintendent Hank Grishman at the Jericho Board of Education meeting August 3rd in the Middle School/HS School Auditorium. Citing research by the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Grishman and Assistant Superintendent Ben Ciuffo said that remote learning has been found "to be detrimental to students' social and emotional development." "When the kids come back to school, in person," said Ciuffo, the research found that "the joy and happiness was evident." New Board member Sam Perlman, noting the online comments and questions by meeting attendees who had joined on the Zoom session, urged that the chat comments be read and answered by the administrators. Questions were asked regarding options for students who preferred to continue learning online. "I think we've already answered that," said Grishman. Grishman also reported that when Jericho schools open August 26th, all instructional spaces will be air conditioned--a project that was four years in coming to fruition. He also noted that the district's print calendars for the coming year were mailed out this week. New board member Jennifer Vartanov asked if the policy regarding masking all students would be

He expects to resume the athletic programs in the fall and noted that masks will not be required for outdoor activities. Grishman said that "the safest route to go is masking" because, he noted, masking this past year, along with social distancing and diligent sanitizing procedures, helped Jericho schools have "zero infections" that were transmitted between or to students over the past school year. Students requiring home instruction because of any illness or other circumstance will be taught via the Zoom platform. Grishman also announced that the renaming of the Robert Seaman School to the "Jeffrey Rattner Robert Seaman School" would take place on August 25th, one day before the start of school.
