FRIENDS OF THE BAY CLEANUP

BY RIKKI MASSAND

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino with members of Friends of the Bay, who cleaned up West Shore Road, adjacent to Oyster Bay Harbor. The environmental conservation group Friends of the Bay recently helped clean up West Shore Road, next to Oyster Bay Harbor. Although West Shore Road is a county road, Town of Oyster Bay

Supervisor Joseph Saladino said he was happy to pitch in and lend a hand for the cleanup efforts, because much of the debris and refuse present on this main road and shoreline could potentially end

up in Oyster Bay Harbor, potentially endangering wildlife. Supervisor Saladino commended those on hand for their dedication to the environmental stewardship of this amazing habitat.

Water supt: Progress made on plume BY GARY SIMEONE

The so called Grumman Navy plume has been a decades-long work in progress to clean up what is considered to be Long Island’s largest underground mass of water pollution. There have been many different parties involved in the

multi-million dollar remediation project, and years of government red tape has frustrated local water districts and residents alike. In a recent telephone interview, Bethpage Water District Superintendent Mike Boufis explained to me the current state and timetable

of the ongoing remediation project. “Currently things are moving in the right direction,” said Boufis. “Three wells have already been drilled in Bethpage as part of the remediation work on the eastern side of the plume, and the design and building phases are underway See page 12

But at the Board of Education’s virtual meeting held Thursday evening, July 23, Jericho Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Ciuffo explained that all elementary school students in Jericho -- attending Cantiague, Jackson, and Seaman Elementary school buildings -- will be back at schools five days a week, but class sizes for each elementary grade level class will be reduced, “so that there will be classes of between 17 and 23 students to a room.”

Wearing masks to class?

Elementary-level kids will wear face coverings each day to arrive at the school campus, such as coming off or getting onto the school bus, and at times when social distancing is not possible -- but they would not be required to wear a mask during class. Dr. Ciuffo says Jericho Schools’ administration is recommending that all students in grades 6 through 12, however, do wear masks or face coverings for their unconventional instructional days that are planned. “Each elementary school will follow a cohort model -- that means these students will stay in their classrooms for the majority of their school day and there will be limited movement allowed and no large group gatherings. Lunch will be delivered to the elementary school students’ classrooms and special education services will provide their services in the cohort classroom “thereby limiting students’ movement even more so,” Ciuffo noted. Under the proposal the students of Jericho MidSee page 12
