Chamber, officials toast new Syosset coffee shop
BIRTHDAY WISHES
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
The Town of Oyster Bay has honored Birthday Wishes of Long Island, an organization serving thousands of homeless children and their families by bringing them the joy of celebrating a birthday and having a party. In support of this incredible organization, the Town is currently hosting a collection drive which will last through July. Supervisor Saladino commended the organization’s efforts and proclaimed the day to be “Birthday Wishes Day”, and proudly presented Long Island Director Jamie Rapfogel with a proclamation.
Wall Street grants higher rating to Town
Wall Street's Moody's Investor Services has granted the Town of Oyster Bay a "positive outlook" rating for the first time in almost twenty years. In assigning the new positive designation to the Town, Moody’s recognized that Oyster Bay is ‘on the road to healthier finances and there is now every indication that the Town’s efforts will culminate in a successful restoration of financial health.’ Moody’s further acknowledged
the Town’s finances as being ‘vastly improved’ and its confidence that Town ‘finances will continue to improve based on strong measures taken by management to reverse the past history of poor budgeting.’ The report further touted the administration’s ‘numerous steps to improve financial operations.’ Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said, “Wall Street recognizes the positive steps being taken by my admin-
istration and the Town Board to restrict spending, pay down debt and balance the books without raising taxes.” The positive outlook designation comes after Town’s recently-issued financial audit results, which indicated that the Town successfully eliminated the multi-year operational deficit which hit a high of $44 million, while also ending 2018 with a net $17.7 million budgetary surplus.
The local business community, together with a handful of Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County elected officials, took a special coffee break in Syosset on Wednesday June 12. Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce President Charo Ezdrin welcomed a crowd of 40 local professionals, small business owners, elected officials and regular customers to Mongo’s Coffee at 170 Michael Drive for its grand opening/ribbon cutting, filled with words of encouragement and support for a Syosset-based family, Mongo’s owners/operators Mitchel and Marna Margulis and their sons. Two years ago, in July 2017, Ezdrin was new in her role as the Chamber and Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Thomas Hand welcomed the new Crossfit Peak Dynamics a few doors down at 180 Michael Drive, owned by Syosset High graduates Bryan Jonas and Katherine Sadis, with a ribbon cutting. The Chamber and Councilman Hand also welcomed Puzzle Break Long Island to 180 Michael Drive -- directly across from Mongo’s Coffee -with ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremonies in August 2017 followed by a general Chamber meeting on August 16, 2018. “It’s just another addition to our fast-growing community when a business like yours comes into Syosset. Very rarely is there a person out here who does not rely on coffee daily. Who doesn’t love this coffee!! And this shoppe is beautifully-appointed, terrific settings in a central location for students to come ‘sip and study’ or for business workers to meet, for friends to hang out locally. I am so grateful and so is our business community to see Mongo’s open and have our local elected officials join us to welcome them today,” Chamber President Ezdrin said. On June 12 Ezdrin greeted the Margulis family, starting with the namesake (Mongo) owner and 23-year Syosset residents, husband Mitchel and wife Marna. “I invite you to participate with our Chamber and network and become a part of this amazing family the Chamber has become,” Ezdrin said. She along with elected officials commented on their belief for Mongo’s Coffee to be a networking and meeting place hub among Chamber member businesses, with adequate space for social events, gatherings and guest speakers.
