Syosset native opens coffeehouse BY GARY SIMEONE

If you’re looking for a caffeine fix, there are a lot of choices out there like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or even your local supermarket. But if you’re looking for a laid-back atmosphere in a 4,000 square foot former warehouse, then Mongo’s Coffee Roastery & Lounge is the place to go while you sip your caffeinated beverage. Mongo’s was founded by Syosset native Mitchel Margulis, who is no stranger to

the specialty coffee industry. The 56-year-old is a wholesale coffee roaster and co-founder of the Stone Street Coffee Company. He has also helped to open fifteen different financier patisseries throughout the city. “I left Stone Street in 2014 because there was too much chasing sales positions and chasing salaries. It got to be too much,” said Margulis. “I wanted to get involved with something with a little more of a hometown feel.” Mongo’s, which is a nick-

name that was given to Margulis, is located at 170 Michael Drive. It is the perfect setup, with a lot of office buildings in the area and new businesses opening the stretch of Inside the spacious and well lit coffeehouse, are plenty of tables with different sized chairs and stools and a fullsize lounge area. There is a case full of baked goods and desserts, and a 25 Probat kilo roaster stands as the centerpiece. “The Probat is a monster,” See page 4

It was February 14th, 2018, in Parkland, Florida, when a crazed gunman killed 17 students and staff members in one of the worst school shootings in our nation’s history. One of the staff members who was killed in the massacre was Scott Beigel, a geography teacher who valiantly saved the lives of a group of students by ushering them into an unlocked classroom away from the gunfire. It was that unfortunate tragedy, that prompted Jericho High School seniorLucy Peters to begin her campaign for stricter gun-control legislation in our country. Beigel was a beloved cousin of Peters, and his untimely demise spurred her to increase awareness of gun-control in our country. A month after the school shooting, Peters organized a walkout at the High School to memorialize the seventeen people who were killed at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. “I wanted to represent Scott, and all the other people who were killed in tat terrible tragedy in Florida,” said Peters. She said that seventeen of her fellow students participated in the walkout and that the walkout was fully supported by school administration. “Each student represented one of the victims who was killed in

the school shooting, and we presented seventeen different biographies that day,” said Peters. “Each one of the victims was eulogized and the students and staff members held a moment of silence in their honor.” On April 20th, 2018, Peters organized a second walkout at her school, that was not school sanctioned or supported by the district administration. It was however observed by Nassau County representatives. On that day, a team of seven students, from both the high school and middle school, spoke about research into gun violence statistics and instituting tougher gun-control policies. “Each kid picked a topic to speak about to increase awareness of gun-control legislation.
