Drucker (D - Plainview) joined community members, supporters and friends of 22-year-old Plainview resident Rebecca Koltun at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School on Saturday, May 28, for the Rally for Rebecca 5K Walk-Run-Roll. Local trucking firm feels labor pinch Teens charged in BY GEORGE HABER A national shortage of truck drivers and dock workers is taking its toll on local transportation and delivery firms. That’s the view of Jamie St. Onge, an account executive with ExpoLogistics of Syosset, a major shipping company, which has seen its workforce reduce over the past few years. While losses to the covid pandemic may account for some of the reduction, St. Onge explains,

“The average age of truck drivers is over 55. The drivers who retire aren’t being replaced.” “People don’t usually grow up wanting to be truck drivers,” he says. The result has been a marked slowdown by ExpoLogistics for one, in the pace of deliveries of shipments to commercial and residential clients alike. St. Onge says Expo is now doing more deliveries to residences than it had done in the past. Where years ago, a steady stream of trucks

would make their way out of the terminal on Gordon Drive onto Jericho Turnpike, today only a trickle is observed on a typical day. “The nationwide shortage of truck drivers has hit eighty-five thousand,”St. Onge says. And with futurist talk of the coming day when automation and robots will replace truck drivers, industry observers say the situation is likely to become worse before it gets better.
