Scott Wong (Syosset UFSD), who attends Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts, proudly displays his George Farber Outstanding Student Award, surrounded by administrators, faculty, family and Nassau BOCES Board members at a recent celebration.
Scott Wong of the Syosset UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of Scott’s remarkable attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. Board members, administrators, staff and family were on hand to celebrate at a special ceremony earlier this spring.
Scott works extremely hard to achieve his goals, whether personal, academic, artistic or professional. He is passionate about his future and is devoted to finding the right college program that will empower him to land a successful career in the broadcast industry. To that end, he is studying audio techniques in LIHSA’s Sonic Arts program. He has put the knowledge he is acquiring in his classes to work in producing and hosting his own podcast, exploring a variety of topics relevant to his peers. The program is a burgeoning success with over 500 subscribers.
Last year, Scott took first place in the Audio/Radio category at both the regional and state SkillsUSA competitions, then went on to place eighth at the national level. This spring, he and his team again placed first in the SkillsUSA state competition. An advocate of men- tal health and wellness, Scott established a Mental Health Club at his home school. He created the club as a safe space for students to talk about serious issues, and currently serves as its president. He also uses the platform of his podcast to address topics related to mental health.
“The first word I would use to describe Scott would be honest,” said his award nominator. “He is open about his personal struggles, which contributes to making a safe community for his peers. He has high expectations for himself and works hard to be the exceptional individual that he is.”
“Not only do these students demonstrate the very best of Nassau BOCES, each of them has also shown the true spirit of George Farber,” said James Widmer, deputy superintendent. “They all have passion, determination, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship, and willingness to help others. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”
For the past 16 years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.
