Two Jericho Middle School students were honored last week in a Google Zoom presentation after winning the “Toshiba Exploravision” science competition at the regional level. Sixth-graders Dylan Rateshwar and Armaan Dewal won the prestigious competition after submitting their “Away with Alzheimer’s” project. “Imagine having to watch someone you truly care about forget who you are, but who they are themselves,” said Rateshwar. “It is truly heartbreaking, yet this is a sad reality for six million patients and their families who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease in America alone. In our research of Alzheimer’s, we created Away with Alzheimer’s to help find a cure for this terrible disease.” The two students displayed video presentation of a person’s brain that is afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease compared to that of a normal healthy brain. Dewal explained the mechanisms at work that affect a person's brain who is suffering with Alzheimer’s. “When one is afflicted with this disease, there are clumps of proteins that form in brain tissue called amyloid beta plaques and tau tangles,” said Dewal. “During Alzheimer’s, amyloid beta and tau proteins accumulate around brain neurons so they’re not able to communicate properly.” Rateshwar said their project is a five-step procedure that extracts these amyloid plaques and tau tangles from brain neurons to restore normal signaling. The first step includes radio tracers being placed in a person’s bloodstream to track amyloid plaques and tangles so they can be traced by a PET or CT scan. The second step involves using specialized machinery to create slits in the upper nasal cavity, and the skull near the brain’s prefrontal cortex region, to create a pathway between nostrils and brain. Step three has nanomotors, that are maneuvered by controls to travel between the nostrils and the brain. “In the last two steps, which are most important, these nanomotors will collect the amyloid plaques and tau tangles from See page 16
