Local schools provide meals, online learning during closure

Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray presented a Certificate of Recognition to Cub Scout Pack 318 during its 28th Annual Pinewood Derby on February 15. Town Clerk Murray was joined by Cub Master Rich Brady, Den Leader Ed Hand and Cub Scouts.

Local libraries closed due to virus Jericho Public Library

The Jericho Public Library is closed for the remainder of March. It anticipates re-opening on April 1. The Board will re-evaluate at that time. No fines and no late fees will accumulate until two weeks after re-opening. As a reminder, you can use the Library's online services here to access books, audio books, magazines,

Syosset Public Library

The Syosset Public Library will be closed through Sunday, March 29. It plans to reopen to the public on Monday, March 30. During this time, the book and media drops will have limited hours and be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Do not leave books when See page 13

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran issued an executive order on Sunday, March 15, closing all public schools in the county for two weeks, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. On its website, the Syosset School District said that it would be offering food service to students in need starting on March 16. Breakfast and lunch will be available for pickup at H.B. Thompson Middle School, 98 Ann Drive, Syosset, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The distribution location will be from the main entrance of the building. Please note there will be no access to the interior of the school building. The meals will be available in grab-and-go bags to bring home as the cafeterias are unavailable for congregation. According to the district, District teachers and administrators have been engaged in planning for continuity of instruction through online learning in the event of a closure. Teachers will be able to interact with students through a variety of online digital resources including Google Classroom (K-12) and/or the Canvas Learning Management Platform (9-12) that are accessible through the ClassLink Single-Sign On Application. Online classes are expected to

begin on Thursday and Friday, March 19 and 20. The Syosset School Board meeting, scheduled for 8 p.m. on March 16 will be closed to the public but will be streamed online on the District web site. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers said, “We have been receiving many messages from the community, and again, I apologize that we are not able to respond individually at this time. I sincerely appreciate the many messages of support, and for those who have expressed their frustration and concern, please know I understand your position. We are doing our best to navigate this unique and challenging situation following the recommendations of our public health officials to protect the best interests of our students and staff. Our local public health officials are shifting to a more aggressive strategy and we will implement that strategy wholeheartedly. “We will continue to monitor this evolving situation daily, follow the advice and direction of public health authorities, and provide you with updates as we receive them.
