Local schools provide meals, online learning during closure

Local libraries closed due to virus Jericho Public Library

The Jericho Public Library is closed for the remainder of March. It anticipates re-opening on April 1. The Board will re-evaluate at that time.

No fines and no late fees will accumulate until two weeks after re-opening.

Syosset Public Library

The Syosset Public Library will be closed through Sunday, March 29. It plans to reopen to the public on Monday, March 30.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran issued an executive order on Sunday, March 15, closing all public schools in the county for two weeks, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On its website, the Syosset School District said that it would be offering food service to students in need starting on March 16. Breakfast and lunch will be available for pickup at H.B. Thompson Middle School, 98 Ann Drive, Syosset, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

The distribution location will be from the main entrance of the building. Please note there will be no access to the interior of the school building.

The meals will be available in grab-and-go bags to bring home as the cafeterias are unavailable for congregation.

According to the district, District teachers and administrators have been engaged in planning for continuity of instruction through online learning in the event of a closure. Teachers will be able to interact with students through a variety of online digital resources including Google Classroom (K-12) and/or the Canvas Learning Management Platform (9-12) that are accessible through the ClassLink Single-Sign On Application.

Online classes are expected to

begin on Thursday and Friday, March 19 and 20.

The Syosset School Board meeting, scheduled for 8 p.m. on March 16 will be closed to the public but will be streamed online on the District web site.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers said, “We have been receiving many messages from the community, and again, I apologize that we are not able to respond individually at this time.

I sincerely appreciate the many messages of support, and for those who have expressed their frustration and concern, please know I understand your position.

We are doing our best to navigate this unique and challenging situation following the recommendations of our public health officials to protect the best interests of our students and staff. Our local public health officials are shifting to a more aggressive strategy and we will implement that strategy wholeheartedly.

“We will continue to monitor this evolving situation daily, follow the advice and direction of public health authorities, and provide you with updates as we receive them. We understand this school closure may cause anxiety and uncertainty for students.

Town cancels activities through March 22 In light of an imminent public health threat declared by Nassau County, the Town of Oyster Bay will pause all senior citizen activities at Community Centers beginning Saturday, March 14 through Sunday, March 22. Future activity schedules will be evaluated on a weekby-week basis. Town of Oyster Bay PreSchools located in Syosset-Woodbury and Marjorie Post Community Parks will continue to operate under rules.

The Town of Oyster Bay has intensified cleaning procedures to frequently disinfect facilities and is operating under protocols that meet or exceed the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local Health authorities.

BY GARY SIMEONE In March of 2018, Jaime Weiss’ tenmonth-old daughter Sawyer had developed a swollen eye and was complaining of feeling fatigued. Weiss, a Syosset resident and mother of two children, ended up taking her daughter to the emergency room to find out what was going on.

“After going back and forth through four days of this, a team of doctors approached my husband and I in the ER and told us that our daughter had developed a 7-centimeter tumor on her adrenal gland. They diagnosed her with a neuroblastoma,” said Weiss. “We ended up staying with her in the hospital until Good Friday and called on a family friend, who is a pediatric doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, for advice.”

The doctor said the family was very lucky because Sawyer’s specific type of cancer was both treatable and curable, which isn’t always the case with most pediatric cancer diagnoses.

“Sawyer went through eight months of cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, eleven blood transfusions and a nine-and-a-half-hour surgery to remove the tumor,” said Weiss. “We learned very quickly what a humbling and awakening experience this can be, and that there are too many kids out

there who end up with a worse prognosis than my daughter.”

In October of 2018, right before Halloween, the couple received a phone call saying that Sawyer’s scans were clean and that the cancer had been removed.

Around that time, Weiss’ other daughter, Dylan, made the suggestion that she wanted to do something to branch out and help other kids who had been diagnosed with pediatric cancers.

The family shared their story with friends, including Syosset native Sari Warsaw, who sat down with her children at the time to come up with a healthy, age-appropriate activity to raise money to fight pediatric cancer.

Weiss and Warsaw came up with the idea for the Gold Ribbon Riders, a team of indoor cyclists who help to raise money for rare cancers through the Cycle for Survival organization.

“We came up with the name Gold Ribbon Riders because the gold ribbon symbolizes pediatric cancer awareness,” said Warsaw. “Fifty percent of people who are facing a cancer diagnosis usually have a rare type of cancer where money for research is grossly underfunded.”

Team events for the Cycle for Survival organization take place at sixteen different cities throughout the

country at all Equinox Gym locations.

The Gold Ribbon riders have participated in three different events over the past two years. The events included an epic dance party at the Crestwood Country Day School in Melville in September, where over 600 people participated and raised over $60,000 for cancer research. On February 29, a Cycle for Survival event was held at Equinox in Woodbury and $756,547 was raised for the cause.

The most recent event was held earlier this month at Equinox, where 88 riders pedaled to raise over $413,000 for pediatric cancer research.

“Our team wanted to honor Sawyer at the event, and everybody else was there to honor her and other children who have been affected by a rare cancer," said Weiss. “These events help our commitment to the cause even greater.”

Sari, who is on the board of directors for the Cycle for Survival organization, said that the group also tries to hold family-friendly events that are both hopeful and uplifting to others.

“We wanted to change the face of

the way people raise funds and get the community and children together to come up with some creative ideas,” said Warsaw.

One of the events focused on a campaign for kids to draw their favorite superhero.

“My son Max, who is 8 years old, drew a boy in a spacesuit whose job it is to fly over Earth to seek out children affected by cancer and help them beat the disease,” said Warsaw. “A lot of these kids came up with some really great and interesting campaigns.”

Weiss said that one of the unique things about the organization is that all the money raised from events goes directly to the research of rare cancers.

“This way, we don’t have to wait for grant money for research, which is a time consuming process, and a lot of these doctors and scientists are really excited about the money that is raised through Cycle for Survival.”

Harvard Club honors Town seeks nominations for Women of Distinction Syosset High School teacher Nominations are now being accepted for the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2020 Women of Distinction Awards Program.

At the start of Women’s History Month, residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities.

“Do you know an extraordinary woman who goes above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them, and to make our communities a better place to live? Nominate her to be a 2020 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction. This is an annual ceremony that recognizes women who have made great contributions to our community,” stated Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson, who serves as the Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee.

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “We are proud to recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference in our communi-

ties and enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a family.”

Women of Distinction will be recognized at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Town Board in May. Nominations may be submitted for any achievement or honorable cause performed by the nominee. The Town seeks to recognize individuals for their contributions to the arts, education, environment, athletics, community or civic service, volunteerism or business.

Tax grievance workshops cancelled In light of the imminent public health threat declared by Nassau County, the Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes has canceled the upcoming Property Tax Grievance Workshops scheduled for March 24 in Oyster Bay and March 25 in Hicksville. These cancellations are being made out of an abundance of caution, and the Town of Oyster Bay has intensified cleaning procedures to frequently disinfect facilities and is operating under protocols that meet or exceed the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local Health authorities.

“While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as homeowner to challenge your assessment, and my office has worked diligently to help as many

residents as possible ahead of the April 2nd deadline,” Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato said. “Unfortunately, it is in the best interest of our residents health and general welfare to cancel these upcoming workshops, as we must do everything we can to protect our senior citizens, and our most vulnerable populations who have been most affected by this public health threat.”

Marcy Eager Marcy Eager of Syosset High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2020” by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

“This award honors middle and high school teachers who have profound influenced their students’ lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Dedicated teachers like Ms. Eager inspire Long Island students to excel, to become passionate about learning, and to recognize the value of hard work. These teachers devote countless hours to creating better futures for our children.”

Ms. Eager will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon later in the year, along with eleven other teachers from across Long Island.

Nineteen of Ms. Eager’s 28-year teaching career have been at Syosset High School, where she teaches AP World History, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP US Government and Politics. When she taught social science research, she mentored a finalist and several semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search competition. She has also coached Fed Challenge teams, a competitive Model Congress team, and a Lincoln Douglas debate team, and will coach a team for a Council for Economic Education initiative for the first time this year. In addition, she will become the faculty advisor to the Syosset High School newspaper, The Pulse.

Ms. Eager is also an adjunct professor of economics and finance at Nassau Community College. She holds an MBA in finance and a certificate in educational administration from Hofstra University, and earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology/humanities from SUNY Stony Brook.

In her spare time, Ms. Eager is an

avid reader, book club member and game player, as well as program chair of a local Hadassah group. She resides with her husband Michael Wolfson in Baldwin, where she was born and raised, and has two grown children and two grandchildren.

“I never would have enrolled in as many difficult classes, taken as many risks in my studies, and questioned as many of my own passions as I have at Harvard if I had never met Ms. Eager,” said Ben Senzer, a former Syosset High School student who is expected to graduate from Harvard College this year.

“By showing me what it means to be imperfect—and therefore, what it means to be a real, breathing human being—Ms. Eager taught me to explore the world outside my comfort zone. I am a better student, thinker, and aspiring chemist today because of it,” said Mr. Senzer.

When Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers learned of this award, he said, “On behalf of the Board of Education and the entire central administration team, I congratulate Ms. Eager on this wonderful honor, and thank her for her dedication to our students.”

“We are fortunate to have her as an integral member of our faculty, and she richly deserves this recognition. She exemplifies what a Syosset education stands for: preparing students to thrive in a future which may evolve in ways yet to be envisioned,” said Dr. Rogers.

At the ceremony, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teacher of 2020 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, MA. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island.

This year’s dozen Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. They teach chemistry, earth science, English, history, physical education and mindfulness, physics, and science research. The winners teach in Copiague, East Setaucket, Elwood, Kings Park, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Northport, Plainview, Shoreham-Wading River, Smithtown, Syosset.

Record breaking performance by Syosset DECA club

SHS DECA Club poses at the State Career Conference.

Syosset High School’s DECA club had a record-breaking performance at the State Career Conference in February, bringing home a total of 163 medals with 67 members finishing in the Top 10. Students also earned 51 international qualifier positions, the most of any school in New York State and will be sending 56 team members to the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee this April, where the members hope to continue their incredible success.

Message from Congressman Tom Suozzi “Be prepared. Not scared.”

Dear Friends, This is an unsettling time in our country and in our communities. When it comes to Coronavirus, we may be in a public health emergency, but that does not mean that we lack the resources or the commonsense to deal with it. It is important to reiterate that we need to be prepared and not scared. Heed the advice of public health experts who agree that the most effective way to “flatten the curve” of the spread of Coronavirus is by practicing “social distancing” to keep our communities healthy.

Below is some helpful information regarding coronavirus: How are you infected?

• Coronavirus can spread person-to-person within 6 feet through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

• Because the virus can remain on a surface or object; it can be transmitted by touch; entering the body through mouth, nose or eyes.

Time from infection to symptoms:

• It takes 2 to 14 days for a person to develop symptoms after exposure to the virus.

• The average is about 5 days.

What are the symptoms?

• Fever, • Dry cough, and • Shortness of breath.

When you should seek testing:

• If you are exhibiting symptoms • If you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus • If you have recently traveled to one of the high-risk countries

If you experience any of the symptoms above you should call your health care provider before seeking treatment in person.

In the meantime we all know that certain precautions are important at this time.

• Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds; • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; • Avoid physical contact like handshakes and hugs, especially if Corinavirus is spreading in your community; • Stay at home if you are sick; • Avoid large crowds and • Minimize travel.

It is important during this national emergency that we unite together as a country, listen and follow the advice of experts and take responsibility for our actions to battle this pandemic.

A Bluebird Day of Spring Skiing at Windham Mountain Travel is vitally important to rejuvenating one’s body and soul, not to mention providing life-enhancing experience, new learning and new understanding; it offers a chance for bonding with loved ones, making new friends and building new relationships.

Concern for the coronavirus is causing many of us to withdraw and miss out, and many travel providers have suspended services temporarily to meet the need for social distancing to mitigate the spread of disease.Many are waiving cancellation penalties, reissue and change fees if destinations become impacted or allowing changes and rebooking for future trips.

But because travel offers a universe of possibilities, there are options that might better suit the circumstances, and many travel suppliers are doing their best to accommodate travelers and alleviate concerns. And we can all armchair travel as we plan for future trips.

As a rule of thumb, we are suggesting people think Great Outdoors where you can be active in clean fresh air and avoid crowds, density and proximity, and if concerned about mass travel (even though airlines are doing their level best to assure passengers of healthy environments), choosing destinations that are within driving distance.

Mountain resorts like Windham Mountain in the Catskills have been scrupulous about health precautions, even limiting crowds to promote social distancing. However, due to new state restrictions and recommendations on capacity, Windham along with most ski areas have opted to close early for the season, while regrouping to be able to host guests for summer and fall.

It’s a perfect time - it’s Springtime on Long Island

I often think of spring as that in-between time. It’s not too hot and not too cold. I like being able to put my winter coat and accessories in a closet and forget about them until the cold weather arrives again. Although we have our share of rainy days, on many days the weather is just right and taking some walks outside or drives down by the beach is delightful. Several friends and relatives have birthdays in the spring so this season is always a celebratory time. And here are some additional things that I like about spring.

Asparagus Is An Ideal Vegetable

The best time for fresh asparagus is springtime - there is no doubt about that. Quite often I don’t get to eat any asparagus for months at a time because I am not one to eat canned asparagus.

But after a long winter I am always surprised and delighted when the first crops of fresh asparagus start popping up in my supermarket. April is the best month for asparagus. When eating them with meat or fish I like cooking them in a variety of ways. Sometimes I boil them and sometimes I roast them in a little olive oil in a pan in the oven.

At other times I grill them on the barbecue. When I want to eat them a little bit crunchy, I steam them. I like many of my vegetables al dente. No matter how asparagus is prepared it always tastes good. This green vegetable is nutritious. Asparagus is considered a good source of vitamin K, antioxidants and thiamine. It is also very low in calories. The experts say that one cup of cooked asparagus has 40 calories, 4 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber and

404 milligrams of potassium. When you buy asparagus, either fresh from the farmers’ market or grocery store, it’s best to eat it right away. Asparagus goes nicely with lots of other springtime vegetables and flavors. Peas and new potatoes go well with asparagus. It always helps to remember to wash the asparagus thoroughly before cooking.

Cut the very bottom of the stalks off before cooking. They can be cut into cylinders or cut on a slant. Either way is fine.

A Spring Poem About Rain

James Mercer Langston Hughes aka Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright and columnist who was born on February 1, 1901, in Joplin, Missouri. Early in his life, Hughes’ mother fostered within him a love of the written and spoken word by introducing him to books and taking him to see plays. Although he lived in several places throughout the Midwest during his youth, Hughes always considered Kansas home. He once told a Lawrence, Kansas, audience, “I sort of claim to be a Kansan because my whole childhood was spent here in Lawrence and Topeka, and sometimes in Kansas City.” He moved to New York City as a young man, where he made his career. Hughes is known as being one of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry which was new at the time. He died on May 22, 1967, in New York City at the age of 66. He lived in a row house at 20 East 127th Street for the last 20 years of his life. Visitors to the house can see his typewriter and piano in the parlor.

One of his famous poems which is set in the spring is called “April Rain Song.”

Even though Hughes does not directly refer to Harlem in “April Rain Song,” he did live and work there during the time that he would have written this poem. Many people assume that he was inspired to write the poem while watching the rain fall down on his part of the Big Apple. “April Rain Song” goes: “Let the rain kiss you Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops Let the rain sing you a lullaby The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk The rain makes running pools in the gutter The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night And I love the rain.”

The Popular Song “Stand By Me”

It was in April 1961 that the now famous song “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King came out. In 1960, Ben E. King was inspired to update the early 20th century gospel hymn by Charles Albert Tindley, which was based around the psalm, “will not we fear, though the Earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”

According to the documentary, “History of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” King had no intention of recording the song himself.

King had written it for the Drifters who passed on recording it. After the “Spanish Harlem” recording session in 1960, King had some studio time left over. The session’s producers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, asked if he had any more songs. King played it on the piano for them. They liked it and called the studio musicians back in to record it. Ben E. King’s song became a Top 10

hit in the U.S. both in 1961 and later in 1986 when Rob Reiner’s movie, “Stand

By Me” came out.

King was born Benjamin Earl Nelson on September 28, 1938, in Henderson, N.C. He moved with his family to Harlem when he was nine in 1947. King began singing in church choirs, and in junior high he began performing with a street corner doo wop group called the Four B’s, which won second place in an Apollo Theater talent contest. King worked at his father’s restaurant in New York as a singing waiter which led to an invitation to become the baritone singer in a doo wop group called the Five Crowns in 1958. (allmusic.com) In an interview in 2013, Ben E. King spoke about his fans’ enjoyment of “Stand By Me” and he pledged to perform it for the rest of his life to please crowds. “I’m so proud it has stood the test of time,” he said. When asked about his 50-year career in the music field, King said, “I’d never have dreamed back in the day that I’d have such an amazing career. I always felt I never chose music, it chose me. From working in my father’s restaurant in New York to this has all been by chance. I’m so lucky - it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

He also had success with other songs including “There Goes My Baby,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” “Spanish Harlem,” and “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)”. King was a soul singer with one of the most distinctive voices of his era. At the time of his death in New Jersey in April 2015, Ben E. King was survived by his mother, his wife of 50 See page D5

Retirees With Disabled Children

Some older folks who are pushing retirement age might have a disabled minor child and wonder if that child will qualify for benefits once they sign up for Social Security. Or they have an adult son or daughter who is disabled, and they want to know how Social Security works for them. That’s what today’s column is all about.

Let’s start out with the first scenario.

You are about to apply for Social Security retirement benefits. You have a child with a disability. What kind of hoops do you have to jump through to get benefits for that son or daughter? Essentially, none. And that’s because a child under 18 qualifies for benefits whether he is she is disabled or not.

And those benefits normally continue until the child reaches age 18. At that point, the Social Security Administration is going to come back to you and ask if the child is disabled. If he or she is, you will have to fill out a bunch of medical forms that are used to decide if the child meets the legal definition of disability for Social Security purposes. If your child is determined to be disabled, then benefits will continue indefinitely.

Or let’s say you are thinking of retiring and you have an adult son or daughter who has a disability. If that disability began before age 22, he or she will be eligible for what the law calls “disabled adult child” benefits on your account.

If you have a disabled adult child, he or she will get an amount equal to 50% of your full retirement age benefit. And that would be something to contemplate if you are trying to decide when to start your Social Security checks. Let’s look at an example.

Frank is 62 years old and recently retired. He has a 35-year-old son, Thomas, who has been disabled since birth.

Frank is trying to decide if he should take reduced retirement benefits now or wait until he is 66 years old to get his full monthly Social Security check. We’ll say his full retirement benefit is $2,400 per month.

If he retires now at 62, he will get 75 of that full retirement age amount, or $1,800 monthly. And Thomas will get 50% of his full retirement age rate, or $1,200 per month. So, they would be due total combined benefits of $3,000 each month.

If Frank were to wait until 66 to file fr benefits, Thomas would have to wait, too.

In other words, Frank can’t file for benefits for his son until he signs up for Social Security himself. At 66, Frank would get $2,400, and Thomas would get $1,200, for combined benefits of $3,600.

It’s almost a no-brainer. If Frank waited until 66 to file for Social Security, he would get an extra $600 per month. But he would have lost four years of benefits, or 48 Social Security checks, at the com-

bined $3,000 level. That’s $144,000. Frank should seriously consider filing for benefits for himself and his son at age 62.

Disabled children of deceased workers also qualify for monthly benefits.

And the survivor rate is 75% of the full retirement age benefit. So, continuing with our above example: If Frank were to die, his son would get 75% of his full retirement age rate of $2,400. In other words, Thomas would get $1,800 per month. And assuming Thomas remains disabled, those benefits would continue for the rest of his life.

And now I’m going to throw a monkey wrench into our discussion of benefits for disabled children. And that monkey wrench is the Supplemental Security Income program. SSI pays a small monthly stipend to low-income older folks and to disabled children.

Before I go on, I must make the same disclaimer I always make when discussing SSI. It is a federal welfare program that is managed by the Social Security Administration. But it is NOT a Social Security benefit, and the money used to fund SSI payments comes from the general funds of the Treasury, not from Social Security taxes.

Disabled children under age 18 who are on SSI almost always come from low-income families. And that’s because the income of the parent or parents counts toward determining if the child can get SSI. The rules are WAY too complicated to explain in this short column.

But in a nutshell, the more money the parents have, the less likely it is that their disabled child will get anything out of the SSI program.

But the rules change when the disabled child is 18 or older. At that point, the income of the parent(s) is no longer considered. So, many disabled “adult” children get SSI benefits, even if the parents are well-to-do. For example, I have a neighbor who is an airline pilot, who obviously makes a decent living. He and his wife have a 25-year-old daughter who has been disabled since birth. Because the daughter has no money herself, she is technically “poor” according to Supplemental Security Income guidelines, so she gets a monthly check from the SSI program.

And now I’m going to discuss how SSI benefits payable to children can be a monkey wrench in our discussion of the disabled children of retirees. And to do this, let’s go back to Frank and his 35-year-old disabled son, Thomas.

Actually, it is highly likely that Thomas was getting a monthly SSI check from the government for years before Frank turned 62 and started thinking about Social Security. Let’s say Thomas was getting $783 per month from the SSI program. (That’s the maximum SSI rate in most states.)

Frank might wonder if Thomas can

get both his $783 SSI check and the $1,200 disabled adult child check he is due on Frank’s Social Security account. The answer is no. SSI is a welfare program. As such, you get an SSI check if you have little or no other sources of income. So, once Frank signs up for benefits and Thomas starts getting the $1,200 Social Security check, his SSI checks are going to stop.

There’s one final twist involving SSI. What if Frank didn’t have such a big full retirement age benefit? Let’s say it was only $1,400 per month. That means Thomas’s 50% portion would be $700.

Frank might say, “Why bother signing Thomas up on my Social Security account? He’s already getting more money from SSI.” But SSI rules require Thomas to file for any other benefits he might be due. So, he would have to sign up for the $700 Social Security check and then he would get $83 from the SSI program to take his total income up to the SSI level of $783 per month.

Daffodils: Such Beautiful Flowers

Last spring I had a family party and my sister-in-law and brother gave me a cute gift: a pot of bright yellow daffodils.

It was a rectangular wooden pot with dirt about 12 inches long by 3 ½ inches by five inches high. The daffodils were all in bloom. The gift looked as pretty as a picture as they say and it was the perfect centerpiece for our dinner that night. I knew they would only stay in bloom for a few weeks because the daffodils weren’t planted outside in a garden. Once they went dormant I covered the whole planter and placed it - intact with the bulbs in the soil - in a closet. Last week I pulled it out and to my delight little sprouts were beginning to emerge from the soil.

Symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings, the daffodil is virtually synonymous with spring. Their botanic name is narcissus. Daffodils were introduced

into gardens in about 300BC. The Greek botanist and philosopher Theophrastus listed and described many of the earliest known kinds of narcissus in his nine-volume “Enquiry into Plants.”

Daffodils were brought to Britain by the Romans who thought that the sap from daffodils had healing powers. Actually the sap contains crystals that can irritate the skin.

It was not until the 19th century that classification of the many narcissus species was attempted. Due to their popularity as cultivated plants, thousands of daffodil cultivars have been bred. The petals are mostly yellow or white but occasionally they can be orange, green, red or a combination of these colors.

Tossing Three Coins in the Fountain

The movie “Three Coins in the Fountain” came out in May 1954. Frank Sinatra sang the title song. It refers to the act of throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome while making a wish. Each of the film’s three stars performs this act. A young American secretary, Maria Williams played by

Maggie McNamara, arrives in Rome and is greeted by Anita Hutchins who is played by Jean Peters, the woman she is replacing at the “United States Distribution Agency.” They drive to the “Villa Eden” Anita shares with Miss Frances, played by Dorothy McGuire, the longtime secretary of the American author John Frederick Shadwell, an expatriate living in Rome for the past 15 years. On their way into town, the three women stop at the famous Trevi Fountain. Frances and Anita tell Maria that according to legend, if she throws a coin in the fountain and makes a wish to return to Rome, she will. Maria and Frances throw in their coins, but Anita, who is planning to return to the U.S. to marry, declines. The story goes on. After Anita and Maria are packed and ready to leave, Frances telephones and asks to meet them at the Trevi Fountain. When they arrive, Maria and Anita are disappointed to see the fountain emptied for cleaning. When they are joined by Frances, however, the water springs up again and the women are thrilled by its beauty. Dino and Giorgio then arrive,

The effects of the coronavirus on the economy

W

here is our economy and its real estate dependent GDP moving towards and the future effects and uncertainty of the coronavirus?

Well, we are now in our 128th month of the longest economic expansion in U.S. history dating back to 1856, since the economic collapse in 2008. So everything should be fantastic, right? Well not really, because between the coronavirus, the craziness with the stock market and the uncertainty of the U.S. and global economy, it’s anyone’s guess as to where this is all going. However, Jerome Powell just cut interest rates today 3/3/20 from 1.75-1.25% (50 basis points), to bolster our economy over the worrisome effects now and in the future from the coronavirus. This is the first time this emergency action by the Federal Reserve has occurred since the 2008 crisis. One of the main reasons was tourism and the travel slowdown, with so many canceled flights by all the major airlines that are being severely affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19).

As the virus spreads from country to country this is when it will be called a pandemic and we may be heading in that direction any day, as new cases are occurring on a daily basis in greater numbers outside of China. The shortage of coronavirus detection kits is another problem, whereby there is a lack of testing on those that may have the virus that when sneezing could infect others around them as well as what they may touch.

There was an article in The Washington Post by Kathy Orton on January 6 that was extremely informative in depicting and predicting how the real estate market will perform in 2020.

Our National Association of Realtor’s senior economic advisor, Lawrence Yun had some pertinent thoughts on our market and where it would be

New-home sales are expected to rise to 750,000, an 11 percent increase that puts them at a 13-year high. Existing-home sales will continue to be held down by lack of supply, rising modestly to 5.6 million, a 4 percent increase. The national median sale price of an existing home is expected to grow to $270,400, an increase of 4.3 percent from 2019.

“In 2020, more home-building activity and consequent growth in supply should tame down home price gains,” said Lawrence Yun, the NAR’s chief economist. “That’s a healthy development for potential home buyers.

Southern cities should once again do better than most other markets.”

The NAR expects 10 markets to have home price appreciation that outpaces the rest of the country over the next three to five years: Ogden, Utah; Las Vegas; Fort Collins, Colo.; Colorado Springs; Dallas/Fort Worth; Columbus, Ohio; Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, N.C.; Charlotte; Charleston, S.C.; and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla. The 30-year fixed-mortgage rate will remain below 4 percent in the coming year, moving to 3.8 percent by the end of 2020.

“Interest rates will remain low, as long as we have government backing of mortgage-backed securities,” Yun said.

“But mortgage rates may increase as inflation kicks in and economic activity markedly picks up.”

The bottom line is that the ripple effect of the coronavirus on our real estate, even though interest rates were lowered today, and at the same time inventory is at a 30 year low, unemployment at 50-year lows and interest

rates at 50-year lows and are well below historical norms, may not change anything due to the lack of housing inventory. We need an average of one million homes produced per year to catch up to the ever-increasing demand. The increasing demand will only be satisfied if and when builders can increase their production of moderately priced homes, as the average price of a home in the U.S. has increased to above $270,000. Decreasing interest rates will only have a positive impact on those who are buying what is available, which isn’t much (after the bidding wars and only one family, couple or person is declared the winner) and those who haven’t already refinanced.

The greater impact on our economy here and around the globe will occur as the corona (COVID19) disease progresses and the continued interruption or shut down of our supply chains continues, and as they say, when China sneezes the rest of the world will all eventually catch a potentially dangerous and deadly cold!

Pie for Dinner?

BY MARY HUNT If you shy away from making homemade pies because of the crust (it can be tricky, and there’s all that rolling), you are in for a treat. Meet the “impossible pie.”

Impossible pies are quick, easy and very family-friendly. But what is it that makes them seemingly impossible? The crust starts out as almost liquid; you pour it over the top of the pie and then somehow, in the baking process, the crust finds its way to the bottom and turns into a fabulously delicious pie.

All of the recipes that follow call for “Master Mix,” which is our homemade version of Bisquick. You’ll find the recipe for Master Mix below.

IMPOSSIBLE LASAGNA PIE 1 pound ground beef 1/2 cup small curd cottage cheese (not nonfat) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 cups (8 ounces) mozzarella cheese, shredded 3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1 6-ounce can tomato paste 1/2 cup Bisquick or Master Mix (see recipe below) 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 eggs Fresh parsley, chopped Heat oven to 400 F. Grease a 9-inch pie pan that is at least 1 1/4-inches deep. Cook beef in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until brown; drain. Layer cottage cheese and Parmesan cheese in pie plate. Add 1 cup mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning and tomato paste to the beef; stir until blended. Spoon evenly over top of the cheeses in pie plate. Stir together Master Mix, water, salt, pepper and eggs in a bowl until blended. Pour into pie plate. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup mozzarella cheese.

Bake 1 to 2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired. Serves 6.

Optional: If you have some spaghetti sauce on hand, heat it in the microwave to serve with this pie.

IMPOSSIBLE QUESADILLA PIE 1 4-ounce can green chilies, chopped and well drained 2 cups (8 ounces) cheddar cheese, shredded

1 teaspoon fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped 3/4 cup Bisquick or Master Mix (see recipe below) 1 1/2 cups water 3 eggs Heat oven to 400 F. Grease a 9-inch pie plate that is at least 1 1/4-inches. Spread chilies, cheese and cilantro into pie plate. In a separate bowl, stir together Master Mix, water and eggs until blended. Pour into pie plate.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Serve with salsa. Serves 6.

MASTER MIX 5 pounds all-purpose flour 2 1/2 cups dry milk 3/4 cup double-acting baking powder 2 tablespoons cream of tartar 3 tablespoons salt 1/2 cup sugar 4 2/3 cups solid vegetable shortening Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening until mix looks like cornmeal. Store at room temperature in a covered container like Tupperware.

Makes 30 cups.

Note about pie plates: Pie plates vary in size from one manufacturer to another. If you use a pie plate that is too small, the pie will run over while baking. It’s better to err on the side of a larger pie plate. The size is usually marked on the bottom of the pie plate, but if it’s not marked, measure from inside rim to inside rim.

How Small Business Can Survive the Coronavirus

BY CLIFF ENNICO What a difference a week makes.

Last Saturday my wife and I attended a Broadway show in New York City and had dinner at a popular Italian restaurant in Times Square, taking the commuter train to and from our home in Connecticut. We were planning a vacation in Florida this week.

Today all of Broadway is shut down, as well as the NCAA and NBA playoffs, the PGA tour and just about any activity involving large gatherings of people. People are afraid to travel on public transportation. We canceled our vacation, flight, hotel reservations and car rental.

In less than a week, everyone in America has turned as reclusive and paranoid as Adrian Monk.

Make no mistake: The negative impact of the novel coronavirus on the American economy will be huge, and America’s small businesses will bear the brunt of it, especially those that depend on the following for their livelihood: -- People assembling in one place (restaurants, bars, gyms, theaters).

-- People traveling on airplanes (airport concessions, limousine services).

-- People going on vacation (travel agents, tanning salons, body waxing).

-- Large-scale events (vendors and

concessionaires at sporting events and rock concerts).

-- Physical touching of other people (spas, hair stylists).

No one (myself included) knows how long this will last, but here are some suggestions to help small businesses weather the storm.

Stay Alive Until June. During the next couple of months, people will be hunkered down, but that can’t last forever. We may not be out of danger by June, but two things are probable: -- The risk of infection will be lower then, both because of people’s self-quarantining and predictions that the virus will be less transmittable during the warm summer months (see the NPR article “Can Coronavirus Be Crushed

By Warmer Weather?”), encouraging more people to get outdoors and patronize local businesses.

-- Having caught up on testing by then, we will know much more than we do today about how the disease runs its course, and should be in a much better position to predict a return to normal economic activity.

Do Everything You Can to Maintain Cash Flow. You may not be making a profit for a while, but if revenue dries up completely, you die fast and hard. Do everything you can to keep

money coming in the door.

If you are a restaurant or bar, start doing home delivery. Don’t wait for orders from the self-quarantined to come in via UberEats. Get your wait staff (or that 20-something in your basement) in their cars to deliver all orders. Do an email blast to your regulars. Get on your social media and offer free delivery, volume discounts or a free roll of toilet paper (hey, you probably have a stockpile of these, and no one will be using them) as incentives.

If you are an event organizer or tour operator and people are canceling, keep refunds at a minimum by offering customers credit for the same or a similar trip within the next year at no additional cost.

If you run a grocery store, let your customers know via email when high-demand merchandise will be restocked, and offer them home delivery on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are a professional speaker, offer your best programs as webinars.

If you are a spa or other luxury service, sell gift cards without an expiration date.

If you sell clothing or other merchandise at retail, promote the hell out of your Amazon page, website and other online venues. Source as much product

as you can domestically or from countries not affected by travel bans.

If you are smart enough to have a cash reserve or an untapped line of credit, now is the time to use it, but only sparingly and as a last resource.

Negotiate Your Fixed Costs. Does your lease have a force majeure clause excusing rent payments in the event of war, labor strikes, terrorist activity or other acts of God? If so, now is the time to take advantage of it, even if it doesn’t specifically refer to epidemics or infectious disease. If not, talk to your landlord anyway and see if he or she will grant a six-month rent reduction or deferral. If you are a franchisee, call your franchisor and request a temporary reduction or abatement of royalties and advertising fund payments.

Pull together some hard data demonstrating how much business you are losing each week and month because of the epidemic and mandated shutdowns. That will help you get the relief you need, especially if other tenants and franchisees are making the same requests.

While firing employees outright is not a good idea -- it will make it tougher to get back on track once the government sends the “all clear” signal -- put as many people on part-time status as

possible; reduce your hours; and consider temporary pay reductions for all employees.

Embrace the “R” Word. In tough economic times, whatever the cause, it’s the ruthless business owners -- those willing to do everything short of breaking the law -- who are most likely to survive. The Mill Neck Family of Organization’s Board of Trustees hosted an installation and welcome reception for the new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Asiah Mason. Dr.Mason is the first CEO in the history of Mill Neck that is a female as well as person of color. The evening began with Bishop Derek LeCakes officiating the Lutheran installation service for Dr.Mason in the Mill Neck Manor Chapel. Senator James Gaughran presented Dr.Mason with a Proclamation. It is significant to note that
