Two brothers who attend South Woods Middle School installed a picturesque butterfly garden, thanks to grant money they received from a youth empowerment initiative. Ben Ellis, an 8th grader at South Woods, and his brother, Aidan, a 7th grader, had requested grant money from a program called ‘Difference Makers,’ a charitable arm of Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU.) “It was a few months before the Covid
pandemic happened when we applied for a grant of $5,000 to help with our butterfly garden and planter project,” said Ben. “We initially wanted to use the money to help beautify a local library or public building.” With the help of Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan, the two boys were able to secure the grant through the BFCU. They found out they had won the grant money in early 2021, but were only able to secure $1,700 of the $5,000 mini grant through the Difference Makers program. See page 14
