Little Lending Libraries are designed for you take a book, and leave a new book in its place. They offer neighborhoods a chance to share their used books with others in the community, and is a fun and eco-friendly way to rehome your old books.

Blood drive at athletic center

The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Thursday, March 10 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Town Councilman Steve Labriola stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this

blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped.

Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56

days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

LI Blues Winter Classic Hockey Tournament

The 11th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic will take place on Saturday, March 5 at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. This special event showcases LI Blues hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love versus three other teams from the tri-state area. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free of charge.

The tournament will consist of six games that will take place throughout the day between the four teams.

“The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey in a wonderful setting,” said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “This LI Blues organization brings all the fun of playing ice hockey to athletes with special needs, and this Winter Classic Tournament is the perfect way to highlight their inspirational stories.

Three other teams, the York Polar Bears, the New Jersey Dare Devils and the Nova Cool Cats will be participating and the Town welcomes these teams to the Town of Oyster Bay. We invite residents to come to this event and cheer

on the LI Blues. Their commitment and dedication to the sport is uplifting.”

“The LI Blues organization is pleased to again be partnering with the Town of Oyster Bay to present the LI Blues Winter Classic,” Skip Theiss of LI Blues Special Hockey said. “We are very proud of our program which adapts the game of hockey to make it fun for players with special needs.

The LI Blues Winter Classic is just one of the many special events held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. The facility offers public skating sessions, and serves as home to hockey clubs, figure skaters and special events throughout the year.

A nationwide assault

To the Editor: Recently, a so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would ban teachers from talking about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary schools, was introduced in the Florida State Legislature. The measure would also allow parents to sue school districts if they think a violation occurred.

Laws barring trained, credentialed educational professionals from fostering the healthy and authentic development of their pupils through age-appropriate health education are bad enough. However, a lead sponsor of the measure filed an amendment on Feb. 18 to require schools to inform parents within six weeks of learning that a student identifies as LGBTQ+. The amendment allows for no exemption in cases where there is a reason to believe outing the student would result in abuse, neglect or abandonment.

As a committed ally of the LGBTQ+ community, I am absolutely disgusted by every wrinkle of this abusive proposal - one that is nothing short of an act of state-sanctioned cruelty directed toward America’s marginalized, vulnerable youth. I am horrified by the strong likelihood that it will pass and be signed into law, and I fear the consequences could be deadly.

According to The Trevor Project, the world's largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, at least one

LGBTQ+ person between the ages of 13 and 24 attempts suicide every 45 seconds in the United States. However, because many report attempting suicide multiple times each year, The Trevor Project cautions that this already alarmingly high rate is likely an undercount.

Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill is part of a nationwide assault that has reached more than a dozen statehouses, and I am not so naïve to think that this fight could not arrive at our doorstep at some point in the future.

That is why I am continuing the fight to enshrine County-level protections focused on gender identity in our Human Rights Law and am preparing legislation to convene stakeholders and experts on an LGBTQ+ Advisory Board for the purpose of investigating specific challenges the community faces here in Nassau so that we can implement solutions and meet the needs of all residents.

At a time when the LGBTQ+ community is under attack across America, I am committed to standing with you and doing all I can for as long as I am a Legislator to elevate Nassau County as a beacon of acceptance and affirmation.

Town to offer painting, drawing classes for adults The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that the Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) will be once again offering exciting cultural enrichment programs for the spring 2022 season, and registration for all applications is now open.

“I am pleased to announce that the Town’s Cultural Enrichment Program will return once again this spring, as these enrichment programs offer residents the opportunity to develop a new skill while having fun in the process,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Whether you’re an emerging artist or a resident looking for a new hobby, these classes offer a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons, and provide not only education but enjoyment as well.”

All of the classes will be held at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Center, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury NY, 11797. Nassau County Police are investigating a report of a missing person in Hicksville.

According to police, Bryan Garcia was last seen at his Broadway Place residence in Hicksville on Saturday, February 19 at 6 p.m. He is described as being male, Hispanic, brown hair, brown eyes, 5’8” tall, 150 lbs, unknown clothing. Destination is unknown.

Detectives request that anyone with information regarding the above missing person to contact the Missing Persons Squad at 516–573–7347 or dial 911. All callers will remain anonymous.

Summer camp registration for the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster BayEast Norwich will open on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The exciting 8-week day camp program begins on Monday, June 27th, and ends, Friday, August 19th. Summer Camp at the Club offers a vast array of programs and flexible scheduling options to choose from this summer. The Club provides extended care in mornings and afternoons, half-day and full-day hours, as well as a choice to enroll just for a number of days and/or weeks, rather than having to commit to an entire week or

Registration for Town to offer spring fitness classes youth ice hockey program The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that residents who are interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness will be able to register for the Town’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Classes run for 10 weeks and are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older.

“The Town’s spring co-ed recreational programs have consistently proven to be one of the most popular programs the Town offers each year, as they provide a terrific outlet for our residents to exercise and stay in shape,” said Town Councilwoman Laura Maier. “The Town’s Parks Department has done an amazing job offering residents the opportunity to take advantage of these classes and stay physically active, creating an optimal environment for fitness and forging new friendships!”

This spring, residents can participate in a variety of fitness classes that will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center: • Ballroom Dancing: Saturdays, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning April 16.

• Cardio Kick-Boxing: Thursdays, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., beginning April 14.

• Pilates: Mondays, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., beginning April 11.

The Town of Oyster bay has announced that registration for the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey Program will get underway soon for boys and girls ages 6–16. “This recreational and instruction program is designed to give youngsters a great way to learn the correct fundamentals of one of America’s most popular sports,” said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “In addition to receiving instruction on the proper techniques of skating, stickhandling and shooting, participants will make new friends and create lifelong memories.”

Bank assists taxpayers with free form filing Qualifying taxpayers will have two different ways to file their taxes for free this year, thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union, the only financial institution to offer the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program on Long Island. Now in its 19th year, Bethpage’s VITA program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members.

The first option available to taxpayers is Bethpage’s Virtual VITA program where taxpayers will meet with Bethpage’s trained volunteers virtually, who will then prepare and e-file the tax returns. Virtual appointments will take place February 1 through April 7. Pre-

scheduled appointments are required and can be made on Bethpage’s website at lovebethpage.com/vita.

The second option Bethpage is making available through its ongoing VITA initiative is its Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA) program. Here, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance employee volunteers will help taxpayers prepare and e-file income tax returns for free, virtually during a series of virtual lab sessions. To register for a lab session, contact Bethpage’s Community Development team at 516/349-4288 or email them directly at community@bethpagefcu.com. FSA Lab sessions will take place on February 14,

ments sooner than later as there are a limited number of appointments available.”

Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households and could put an extra $6,728 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors.

Students from South Grove Elementary School kicked off the month of February with an International Week dedicated to celebrating the diversity that represents their school.

Students were encouraged in the opening assembly to be open to the sights, sounds and tastes of the cultures around us. Each morning, they watched videos created by students and staff with a greeting and “Did You Know?” facts about various cultures. The South Grove PTA created a Heritage Museum with displays and exhibits representing

different cultures. Classes visited the Museum during the week.

The week culminated with Culture Share sessions presented by fifth grade students. Over 50 student volunteers attended early morning work sessions and gave up their recess to develop presentations and hands-on activities that shared a culture from around the world. These presentations were shared with the younger grades throughout the day on Friday.

Weekend Getaway in Enchanting Mendocino: Little River Inn

You literally step across Main Street from Mendocino’s charming shops and eateries to enter Mendocino Headlands State Park, a 347-acre park that envelops this enchanting village. It’s almost an understatement to describe The Headlands Coastal Trail as spectacular: dramatic 70-foot bluffs providing views of rocky offshore islands, tide pools and beaches below. The hiking trail begins at the Ford House Visitor Center and continues for some 2 miles around the entire bluff of the headlands to the north side of town.

Our hike starts overlooking Noyo Bay, then snakes around to open views of the Pacific.

One of the highlights of this incomparable trail is Portuguese Beach, named for the Portuguese sailors from the Azores who were among Mendocino’s early settlers.

The tide is low enough when we take the stairs down to Portuguese Beach to come upon these fabulous formations of driftwood, and can see at water level the rock arch. Eric can’t resist and with great abandon, plunges into the frigid water. The beach, its sand surprisingly soft, is aptly named, since it is reminiscent of the beaches in Portugal’s Algarve.

Rounding the bend, there are dramatic rock formations. Offshore and north of the west end of Little Lake Street is Goat Island, a large flat offshore rock that is part of the California Coastal National Monument where you are also likely to see various shorebirds and seabirds. Indeed, it is a good idea to bring binoculars because whales and birds can be seen throughout the year.

The visitor center for Mendocino Headlands State Park is in the Historic Ford House on the south side of Main Street near the beach.

It is worth a visit especially if you are interested in local history and

the flora and fauna you are likely to encounter at the beaches and on the trails nearby. Walking tours are also available. There are public restrooms at the north and south ends of the Headlands- on Heeser Drive and near the Ford House.

The Coastal HeadlandsTtrail is a fabulous place to watch the sunset – the sun literally falls into the ocean – before we head to our next destination, Little River Inn.

Little River Inn

It is just after sunset when we arrive at the Little River Inn, perched on a lovely curve on the Mendocino coast with a commanding view of the ocean. Little River Inn is one of the oldest lodgings on this dramatic stretch of the Northern California coastline, family-owned for 80 years. Over the years, it has

Eric savors the Cioppino, prepared with Dungeness crab, clams, shrimp, local rock fish, simmered in a tomato-fennel broth; and I delight in good ol’ Ole’s cheese Burger with flourishes of grilled onions, tomato, mayo, pickes, Pain de Mei bun, prepared with perfection.

These are the creations of fivestar chef Marc Dym, who was named Executive Chef at Little River Inn in 2006 after Marc and Cally (the fifthgeneration Innkeeper) were married.

Dym, who trained at the Culinary Institute of America, brings a modern twist to classic American-regional cuisine and have garnered Little River Inn high Zagat ratings.

Maintaining Valentine’s Day Plants

By now you surely know that Valentine’s Day was a couple of days ago. If you didn’t give flowers and you need to make up for it, you may want to give an entire plant. Or maybe you did get a plant and want to know how to keep it alive.

Several potted flowering plants are commonly given as gifts from Valentine’s Day through Easter until Mother’s Day. Azalea, calceolaria, cineraria, cyclamen, hydrangea and kalanchoes all make nice blooming gift plants. One of the reasons they are all available at this time of year is that they grow in the same conditions.

They all prefer to have bright light from an east window or a bright artificial light.

A daytime temperature in the 60- to 70-degree range is best and a little cooler at night is fine.

The azalea and hydrangea are both shrubs that can be set outdoors in the summer but usually will not survive the winter if planted outside in cold climates.

They can be brought in during the winter where they might re-bloom. I have had gift azaleas last several years when taken out in the summer and brought indoors in the fall to protect them from cool tem-

peratures. They tend to bloom in the fall and sometimes again in midwinter. If they are not repotted, they need some fertilizer.

Either way, they do tend to fade out over time as they get fewer leaves and some of the branches die.

The cyclamen is a tuber that needs a dry rest period after blooming. Keep the soil damp until May, then let it dry out.

The flowers and leaves will dry up and fall off. In September, repot and water the tuber and keep it moist until May again.

This is one of the tougher bulbs to get to rebloom. It may not even make it to the first May as it tends to rot if it is overwatered.

The calceolaria is called the pocketbook plant because of its many-colored, pouch-like flowers. The cineraria has flowers that look like chrysanthemums, but they come in many unusual colors including many pastel shades. Both of these plants are treated as annuals and are often disposed of after flowering. Both can be grown easily from seed by saving some from the flowers and planting them in the spring. Start them in small pots at first and as they become rootbound move them up to bigger pots.

If you get bulb plants, such as daffodils

and hyacinths, keep the soil moist. They should be as cool as possible; even in the 50s is OK. After blooming keep them in bright light and cool temperatures until they can be planted outdoors. If the leaves turn yellow and die, don’t throw away the bulb. Let it sit in a dry spot until fall or plant it in the garden in the spring, but either way it may not come back the next spring.

If you get an amaryllis bulb, give it bright light and keep the soil damp until spring. Grow it outdoors all summer. In the fall, let the soil dry out and the leaves fall off for a couple of months and then repot it in new soil and start watering it again.

The kalanchoe may have flowers that are pink, purple, orange, red, white or yellow. The flowers can start blooming before Christmas and last until spring.

This is a succulent plant that can tolerate dry soil, but if it is blooming, dry soil may cause the flowers to wilt and die early.

It is the easiest of all the Valentine’s Day flowering plants to get to bloom again. As each flower cluster dies, cut it off. When they are all gone, the plant is a nice-looking houseplant. Next fall, keep

it in a location where it doesn’t get much light at night, or move it into a closet or room that has no light. The plant will bloom again if given six weeks of 14-hour long nights. If the plant grows too large, the ends of the branches can be cut off and they will easily root in potting soil or sand.

A generation gap by any other name isn’t the same

BY CLAIRE LYNCH I used to think the term “generation gap” was overused at times but then I came across a few instances recently in which I saw exactly what people are talking about when describing this social divide between the older generation and the younger one.

My friend, Lauren, went shopping at a local store a few weeks ago and the owner complimented her on her T-shirt which read, “Leon” in large block letters. It had an image of his face complete with a beard, mustache, long hair and wearing a top hat with stars on it and Leon definitely looked like a rock star.

The young man who looked about 25 years old said, “Who’s Leon?”

Lauren promptly answered, “It’s Leon Russell.”

And when he said, “Who’s that?” she burst out laughing.

“You’ve never heard of Leon Russell?” she asked, thinking he must have been pulling her leg.

“No,” replied, looking as serious as could be. He asked earnestly, wanting to know more. It’s hard to sum up a life and a career in three sentences or less but Lauren did her best to do so.

Then she stopped laughing and had to contain her shock. She found it hard to believe that an adult had never heard of Leon Russell but then she was in her 60s and this man was much younger.

“He’s the greatest piano player that ever lived,” Lauren continued.

“What did he do?” the young man asked.

Noting that Leon’s career spanned 60 years and he’s famous for such songs as “Tight Rope,” “A Song for You,” “Wild Horses,” “Lady Blue,” and lots more, she raised her eyebrows incredulously when she saw that none of those titles rang any bells.

“He was a multitalented songwriter and musician and he played not just the keyboard but the guitar, the bass guitar and the baritone horn,” Lauren said.

“Leon Russell also influenced many

other musicians.”

Lauren thought about mentioning Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Boz Scaggs but she figured don’t bring it up. A new generation is here. They’ve got Metallica, Ariana Grande, Eminem, Taylor Swift, etc.

Famous artists and musicians, politics and games are sure to bring some blank responses and show that there still is a generation gap. All you have to do is converse with people of different ages, of different generations, and it rears its head. Technology is another good example. Kids today naturally take to using the Internet and smart phones - to anything computerized or digital. Old timers, on the other hand, frequently shy away from high-tech gizmos and make excuses as to why they don’t Skype or read books on their tablets.

It’s a fact that technology can be empowering for kids of all ages and having a grasp on technology helps kids learn in lots of useful ways. They can do science experiments, be creative and connect with others. We are social beings after all. And having this ability to navigate technology is helpful in school and will be helpful when the time comes for them to start working.

I can say, “I wish, I wish, I wish” and it’s true that I wish we’d had computers and the Internet when I was a kid but we had what we had and a new day has dawned. I have no problem with asking for help with technology and I’ll ask friends or relatives to set me up with something I know I need technology-wise but don’t know where to start.

My nephew, Brian, told me what a playlist was several years ago and when I expressed interest in having one, he set me right up - with songs that I love and enjoy taking with me when going for long walks or cooking a favorite

recipe in the kitchen. My playlist also comes in handy when having company for dinner because in a very effortless way the songs can play in the background and add a certain ambiance to the meal.

I get a kick out of seeing the generation gap in action - seeing that disjointed response when I’m talking about something obvious and the younger person doesn’t even know what I’m talking about - but at other times I long for the good, old days when a clock was an analog clock with hands and numbers not a digital symbol and when even my gas gauge was analog not digital and sure it would fluctuate a bit and make me guess how much gas I really did have left in the tank vs. a more precise number but hey, guessing helped keep me on my toes. Still, I like the new “apps” that tells me my tire pressure and my oil’s viscosity.

Bridging the generation gap is one of my favorite things to do and sometimes when my family and I are sitting around talking I’ll deliberately mention the Beatles or Ed Sullivan or Jerry Mahoney, the doll that spoke because ventriloquist Paul Winchell had a very good, amusing act. I’ll explain who they were and why they were groundbreaking back in the day. Sometimes they listen and sometimes they don’t but I think that opening up their worlds a bit is a good thing.

When they sit back and start talking about Instagram or TikTok well that’s another story for another day. They may as well be speaking a foreign language but still I’ve given it my all and when they explain what’s current right now, I have a chance to learn and open my horizons, too.

A Social Security Pop Quiz

BY TOM MARGENAU OK, class. You’ve been reading my column for a number of years now. It’s time to see how much you’ve learned. So put on your thinking caps, get out your No. 2 pencils, and good luck with this short pop quiz.

QUESTION 1: How many years of earnings are used to compute a Social Security retirement benefit? And are your actual earnings used, or a variation of those earnings?

QUESTION 2: If you are 62 and working full time, can you sign up for reduced Social Security benefits?

QUESTION 3: What is the bonus that you get if you delay benefits beyond your full retirement age?

QUESTION 4: “You can take reduced benefits at age 62 on your spouse’s record and later switch to full benefits on your own Social Security record.”

True or false?

QUESTION 5: Husband Hank’s full retirement age benefit is $2,000 per month. But he delayed benefits until age 70 and is getting $2,640 per month. Wife Wilma never worked, so she filed for spousal benefits on Hank’s record when she turned full retirement age. How much is she getting?

QUESTION 6: Referring back to question 5, when Hank dies, how much will Wilma get?

QUESTION 7: Referring back to questions 5 and 6, if Wilma dies first, what will Hank get (include any special burial benefits)?

QUESTION 8: Tom is 62 and still working and he and his wife are covered by his employer’s health insurance plan. His wife is 65 and retired from her own job that did not offer health insurance. She is about to apply for Social Security and Medicare. Should she take both Parts A and B of Medicare?

QUESTION 9: Where is the best place to get all your Social Security questions answered?

ANSWER TO QUESTION 1: Thirty-five years of inflation-adjusted earnings are used. To figure your benefit, the Social Security Administration indexes all of your yearly earnings for inflation, pulls out the highest 35 of those years and adds them up. Then they divide that total by 420 (the number of months in 35 years) to get your average indexed monthly wage. Finally, they multiply that amount by a variable percentage that depends on how high or low your wages are. It’s about 40% for average wage earners.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 2: Well, you could file for benefits, but you won’t get anything, assuming you are making well over $19,560 per year. That is the earnings penalty threshold for 2022 for people who are under their full retirement age. In the year you reach your full retirement age, you can make up to

$51,960 in the months leading up to your FRA month. Once you reach your full retirement age, these earnings penalties go away, and you can make as much as you want.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 3: Many of you may have answered “8% per year.” Others might have answered “32% if you wait until 70.” Both answers are technically correct, if your full retirement age were 66. But the bonus is actually two-thirds of 1% for each month a benefit is delayed beyond full retirement age. So, if your full retirement age is greater than 66, you will have fewer months to accrue those delayed retirement credits, so your bonus at age 70 will be less than 32%.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 4: False (with one exception). In the past, many people were able to jump through a loophole that allowed them to do that. That loophole is closed for anyone who was not age 66 by Jan. 2, 2020. However, widows or widowers can take reduced benefits on one record at 62 and later switch to full benefits on the other record.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 5: Wife Wilma is getting $1,000 per month. A wife who delays taking spousal benefits until full retirement age is due one-half of her husband’s Social Security benefit.

But she does not share in the delayed retirement bonus that Hank is getting.

So, Wilma only gets one-half of Hank’s FRA rate of $2,000 -- or $1,000. And by the way, if Wilma would have taken benefits before her full retirement age, her spousal rate would be reduced about one-half of 1% for each month she is under FRA. ANSWER TO QUESTION 6: Wilma will get $2,640 per month in widow’s benefits. Even though a wife does not share in her husband’s delayed retirement bonus, the law says a widow can.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 7: Hank won’t get a nickel. He can’t get widower’s benefits because his own retirement benefits are higher. And he won’t even get the measly little $255 death benefit.

In Question 5, I pointed out that Wilma never worked. The death benefit is paid only on the account of someone who worked and paid Social Security taxes.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 8: Tom’s wife should sign up for Part A Medicare (hospital coverage) because it is free.

But she doesn’t need to take Part B (covers doctor visits, lab tests, etc.), which costs $170.10 per month, because her husband is working, and she is covered by his employer’s insurance. When her husband retires and loses that active employment health coverage, then she should apply for Part B, and she won’t pay any delayed enrollment penalties.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 9: This one is easy. Just read my little Social Security guidebook called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.” You can get it for less than 10 bucks at Amazon and other booksellers.

Navigating multiple offers in a sellers market

RAICES We finished an open house in Manhasset Hills last Sunday and it was not much of a surprise to me and my agent Helene that 35 purchasers plus seven agents showed up waiting on line in the cold! We sympathized with everyone as we didn’t want more than two couples at a time, even though the Omicron infection rate has gone down tremendously, we still practice healthy social distancing and required CDC regulations. Even though everyone filled out the required forms, one must be smart and prudent to keep people safe and healthy as we don’t want to be a negative statistic. So we still have to be extremely careful when doing our open houses or meeting with clients.

After receiving a multitude of cash and financing based offers, and more are coming in, one must be very careful to ascertain which ones are truly the best and real and eventually narrowing down the one which will be the highest and best that will be accepted by the sellers, and most importantly close. A bit of a bidding war occurred, but as of this writing nothing had been finalized. It’s not only about the price, but the terms and conditions that will also be critical and at the same time offer the most advantages situation for the sellers.

But in the long run, the sellers have to make their determination after much guidance, which offer they will accept. It is crucial to deal with everyone fairly and provide all buyers with clear communication and disclosure

as to where their offers stand.

Obviously, as they say, “cash is king” in this market, assuming it is high enough that will be acceptable to the sellers. However, there will be times when the terms and conditions provided will be a defining factor in the offer because another offer will not make it contingent or subject to on an inspection. The buyer also might not make it subject to the appraisal, (even if the appraisal comes up short on the value/sale price) which essentially is similar to a cash deal. They might lose their deposit if they don’t come up with the additional amount needed to close. This is rare, but does occur, unless the contract clearly stipulates this in very succinct language. Some banks are getting a bit more conservative, based on the acceleration of prices over the last several years and are requiring more money down to be in a safer position as interest rates have increased over 1 1/2% over the last few months from the low point. However, rates are still at historic lows.

From what I have experienced over the last year or two, there are buyers that have a very strong need and mindset to purchase and who are very capable financially. They are prepared to “pull the trigger” when they find the right home. Many will be resid-

ing in the home for 10-20+ years and do not hesitate to make offers, as I have experienced, especially at our open house.

Presenting all offers to the seller with all the terms and conditions is tantamount for sellers to see and understand the “big picture.”

As a broker I only favor those offers with terms and conditions that make the most sense to the sellers and that they will agree to. Moreover, no personal letters of any kind from buyers are allowed in order to sway sellers to take their offer, as this can cause legal ramifications as favoritism. There are times when a cash offer doesn’t necessarily close the deal because their time to close is too quick or too long, also, too small of a down payment, buyer’s want certain things done or other variables don’t work for the sellers; whereas an offer subject to financing provides the best scenario for the sellers.

When receiving multiple offers it is important that they are all presented in an efficient and straight forward manner, and to provide the best guidance for sellers and purchasers to come to a happy conclusion to that one lucky family or person.

One Last Super Bowl Story TRACY BECKERMAN

I have to admit I’m not the most savvy sports enthusiast. Fortunately, what I lack in knowledge, I more than make up for in enthusiasm. I am a loyal fan, and I will root fervently for the team with the best uniforms. I’m kidding, of course. I’m not that shallow.

I actually root for the team with the cutest players.

So, when I found out we were invited to a Super Bowl party, I was pretty stoked, as the kids would say. And this wasn’t just any Super Bowl party.

This was the Academy Awards of all Super Bowl parties. With big-screen TVs set up in every room, a cornucopia of Super-Bowl-themed food, and an actual, live, in person halftime show.

Having been to a big football school, I understood the fine art of tailgating, but figured, now that we were all grown-ups, football parties had prob-

ably gotten a little classier than when we sat on the back of a pickup truck chugging beer from a red Solo Cup. Unfortunately, since I spent so much time before the game sitting on the back of a pickup truck swigging beer from a red Solo Cup, I never usually made it into the actual game. Therefore, my knowledge of football was actually kind of lame.

Since I knew I was not that sportssmart, I thought I would focus on the two things I do know very well: clothes and food. For the food, I wanted something tasteful and yet tantalizing. Then I needed an appropriate Super Bowl party outfit... you know, something that said, “I’m a fashionable football fan.”

I put a lot of thought into both these things and when the big day arrived, I spun around for my husband and grinned.

“What do you think?” I asked. He

stood and gaped at me.

“What the heck are you wearing?” he asked. I was decked out in my coolest tie-dyed football jersey with black skinny jeans and suede over-the-knee boots.

“I am wearing my coolest tie-dyed football jersey with black skinny jeans and suede over-the-knee boots,” I told him.

He guffawed. He snorted. I scowled.

“What is so funny?” I demanded.

“You’ll see when we get there,” he said snidely. “What’s that?” he asked pointing to the tray of hors d’oeuvres I was carrying.

“This is a charcuterie board with an elegant fruit, cheese and crudites display,” I explained.

He snorted again. I decided he had no sense of Super Bowl party decorum, so I ignored him, and we left.

When we arrived fashionably late at the party, I made my grand entrance.

Nobody noticed. I stepped back and made my grand entrance again. Again, nobody noticed. Everyone was too busy scarfing hamburger sliders, loaded nachos and greasy chicken wings in their stained T-shirts, shredded jeans and sneakers to notice the idiot in the super-fancy outfit carrying a tray of super-fancy food.

Realizing I’d totally missed the boat on the food and clothing call, I decided the only thing to do was fall back on Plan B and at least show my host my superior sports knowledge.

“So,” I asked him, “what inning are we in?”

To adopt the Annual Budget of the Bethpage Public Library for the fiscal year 2022-2023 and to authorize the requisite portion thereof to be raised by taxation on the taxable property of the Bethpage Union Free School District; and 2.

To elect one Library Trustee, for a term of five (5) years, commencing July 1, 2022 and ending on June 30, 2027, to succeed – Christina AgostiDircks, whose term expires on June 30, 2022.

A petition shall be required to nominate such candidate to the office of Library Trustee.

Petitions shall be directed to the District Clerk at the School

District Administration Offices Cherry Avenue and Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, New York, and shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District. Vacancies on the Board of Trustees are not considered separate specific offices; candidates run at large. Nominating petitions shall not describe any specific vacancy upon the Board for which the candidate is nominated. Petitions shall be available at the Office of the District Clerk at the School District Administrative Offices, Cherry Avenue and Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, New York. In the event that any such nominee shall withdraw his or her candidacy prior to the election, such person shall not be considered a candidate unless a new petition nominating such person in the same manner and with the same limitations applicable to other candidates is filed with the District Clerk. REGISTRATION FURTHER NOTICE IS GIVEN that pursuant to Section 2014 of the Education Law, personal registration of voters is necessary and no person shall be entitled to vote at said Special District Meeting of April 11, 2022 unless such person has personally registered.

Each person may register for the said Special Meeting by appearing personally before the Board of Registration of the School District on March 30, 2022, as hereinafter stated. The Board of Registration will meet for the purpose of personal voter registration and the preparation of a register of the qualified voters of said School District, on March 30, 2022 between the hours of 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. at the School District Administrative Offices during which time and at which place members of the Board of Registration shall place upon the School District Register the names of all qualified voters personally appearing before them, provided they are known to be or proven to the satisfaction of such Board of Registration that

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that military voters who are qualified voters of the district may submit an application for a military ballot by requesting an application from the District Clerk and returning the application in person or by mail to the Office of the District Clerk at 10 Cherry Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714, no later than 5:00 P.M. on March 16, 2022. In the request for an application for a military ballot, the military voter is permitted to designate his/ her preference for receiving the application for a military ballot, and the military ballot, by mail, facsimile transmission or electronic mail. Ballots for military voters shall be distributed to qualified military voters no later than March 17, 2022. Such application must be received by the Board of Registration at least seven (7) days prior to the Special District Meeting if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the Special District Meeting, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. NYPD dog visits Charles Campagne Elementary School

Woman robbed at Levittown home Nassau County Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on Wednesday, February 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Levittown.

According to detectives, a female victim, 52, arrived at her home located on Ridge Lane where she was approached by an unknown male. The man displayed a handgun and demanded money. Police say he then forcibly removed the victim’s pocketbook containing a cell phone, wallet, credit cards, and an undisclosed amount of US

currency before fleeing southbound on Ridge Lane.

The subject is described as a male black, 18–25 years old, 5’7” – 5’8” tall, wearing a beige hooded sweatshirt.

There were no injuries reported.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding the above incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.

All callers will remain anonymous.

Arrest in Hicksville domestic incident Nassau County Police arrested a Farmingdale man on Sunday, February 20 after he allegedly injured his girlfriend and two police officers during a domestic dispute.

According to detectives, Salvatore M. Alani, 26,became involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, 30, at 1:15 p.m. at a location on South Oyster Bay Road, Hicksville.

Police say the female victim suffered several abrasions to the right side of her neck and called police.

Upon police arrival, officers were informed that Alani was intoxicated and broke a flat screen television before fleeing the scene. Responding officers eventually located him a short distance away.

Police say that as they were attempting to place Alani in custody, he became combative,

refused to comply with verbal commands and spit in an officer’s face. Alani was eventually taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

According to police, Alani was in violation of protective stay away order involving his girlfriend.

As a result of the altercation, two officers suffered injuries and were treated at a local hospital. The female victim refused medical attention at the scene.

Alani is charged with two (2) counts of Assault 2nd Degree, Criminal Contempt 1st Degree, Criminal Contempt 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Harassment 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree and Resisting Arrest.

Louie the NYPD Dog and his partner, NYPD Detective Tim Brady, visited third graders at Charles Campagne Elementary School in Bethpage on Jan. 27.

Photo courtesy of the Bethpage Union Free School District Third graders at Charles Campagne Elementary School in Bethpage learned all about service dogs as Louie the NYPD Dog visited students on Jan. 27. Louie’s partner, NYPD Detective Tim Brady, spoke to students about Louie and his daily duties with the NYPD’s Bomb Squad.

Louie, who is known as an Explosive Detection Canine, is a 3-year-old Labrador retriever trained to conduct searches for a variety of explosive materials. He is one of 16 dogs who works with the city’s Bomb Squad.

Prior to meeting Louie and Detective Brady,

students read the story, “Aero and Officer Mike: Police Partners,” by Joan Plummer Russell. The story, which shares the special bond of Corporal Mike Matsik and his K-9 partner, Aero, taught students some of the basics of service dogs.

After students learned about Louie and his responsibilities, Louie demonstrated his skills as he searched for an item in the All Purpose Room.

Louie now lives with Detective Brady and his wife, Michelle Brady, a third grade teacher at Charles Campagne.
