LUNAR NEW YEAR

Science scholars present work at BoE meeting BY RIKKI MASSAND

Ruka Anzai of Jericho honored as Asian Woman of the Year. To ring in the Chinese New Year of the Tiger, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand hosted the Town’s first-ever Lunar New Year Celebration at Town Hall. Held in partnership with the South Asian Advisory Board and numerous Chinese-American Community Groups, the event featured traditional Chinese decorations, cuisines, and cultural rituals, in addition to a ceremony honoring leaders of the Chinese-American Community. “It was my honor to bring this amazing holiday of the Lunar New Year to Town Hall for the first time in our Town’s history. Together, we celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Tiger, which represents individuals who are

brave, competitive, unpredictable, and confident,” Supervisor Saladino said. “That’s why we chose to honor many Chinese-American Community Groups at this event, as their efforts to educate our residents about the Chinese culture and share their rich heritage reflect these values and are immensely enriching to our Town.” “I thank all of the residents who attended this event, as well as Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman who shared in our most festive and historic celebration. It provided a wonderful opportunity to deepen our knowledge of the diverse cultures that make up our town, and I look forward to the Town hosting future celebrations,” Supervisor Saladino concluded.

Four Syosset High School students, all national Regeneron Talent Search scholars, presented their projects in front of the Board of Education and audience at the monthly Syosset Central School District meeting, held on Monday February 7. Each of the four students is a national Regeneron finalist or semifinalist in this year’s competition for science research. Of the 40 finalists in the country, Syosset High School has two students. Syosset High seniors Sabrina Chen and Eric Huang are among the national Semifinalists in the competition, while their peers Ethan Chiu and Rohan Ghotra are national Finalists. As part of the group of 40 students nationwide named Finalists, the district noted that Chiu and Ghotra will proceed to a rigorous judging process, interact with leading scientists,

display their research for the public, meet with national leaders, and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards provided by Regeneron. Syosset’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers noted that the entire district is very proud of the students. “We know this is not just representative of their work during this school year or at Syosset High, but this is the culmination of work that literally started in the middle school with their tremendous amounts of effort; hundreds and thousands of hours spent on this work that allows them to win this incredibly prestigious competition,” he said. The Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) scholars are selected based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists as demonstrated See page 12

Local officials denounce proposed change in zoning BY GARY SIMEONE It was quite a scene in East Meadow on Thursday, February 3, as dozens of local Nassau County officials gathered to rally against a state rezoning plan. The provision, which is part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s state budget proposal, would mandate that localities permit apartment dwellings on property of homes that are currently zoned for

single family use. Officials who came to denounce the plan included County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joe Saladino and Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald Clavin. The County officials on hand spoke about the potential negative impacts of the proposed plan, including on the environment, emergency personnel See page 12
