The Syosset Board of Education and parents in the community got a fresh take on the district’s math education programming and initiatives at January’s board meeting. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers describes the new paradigm as making mathematics “more lively, more interesting and more insightful” and being more inclusive of technology. Dr. Rogers said the goal in 2019 is to shift from operational math, where students shift from a routinized series of operations to arrive at a direct result for individual problems, to more conceptual math, embedding in students a deeper understanding of math concepts so that they are better equipped to problem-solve and work methodically in a familiar way over the course of many years in the K through 12 settings. At the Monday, February 11 Syosset Schools board of education meeting the annual Student Achievement Report will be shared with the community. Rogers says that before talking about the results in Syosset Schools, the Mathematics faculty was prepared to talk about the innovative new math instruction model as a prelude. Syosset Coordinator of Mathematics K-12 John Genova said the district aims to propel students mindsets, passion, and engagement with math. “It is our core belief that learning mathematics at a high level is something that everyone can accomplish. We want every student to see themselves as a mathematical thinker and we do this by cultivating valuable problem-solving strategies and facilitating powerful collaborations,” he explained. Genova showed the school board and audience at the meeting a picture of middle schoolers in both Harry B. Thompson and South Woods Middle School collaborating to learn mathematics concepts and discussed Syosset’s commitment to teamwork and flexible See page 18
