Like many businesses across Long Island, Phil’s Pizza in Syosset has been struggling to make ends meet as a result of the ongoing pandemic. “It’s been a tough road for us, just like it has for many other local businesses across the country and on Long Island” said Anthony Lau-

rino, owner of Phil’s. “Our customer base has fallen off and the bills have been continuously mounting. Thankfully I’ve been able to keep my staff here and working.” Laurino said that he reached out to an organization called Barstool Sports in December seeking economic relief for his struggling business.

“I was familiar with their organization and I saw on Instagram how they recently bailed out Borrelli’s Restaurant & Pizzeria in East Meadow. I thought what the heck, why not give it try. I’ve got nothing to lose.” The founder of Barstool Sports, an avid sports fan named David Portnoy, is See page 14

The Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce hosted Nassau County Executive Laura Curran at its first meeting of 2021, held on Zoom on Thursday, January 21. New Chamber of Commerce President Russell Green welcomed Curran and thanked her for directing the Chamber to contact the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for the cloth masks and hand sanitizers being distributed to member businesses and nonprofit organizations. He also thanked her and her staff for the County’s PPE kits distributed to small businesses. “County Executive Curran has been a leader in our community throughout the pandemic, ensuring that our communities have been able to thrive and survive through these unusual times. In my research for this meeting I found out we’ve both lived in Five Towns, so there’s kinship between us, and that she used to be a reporter for the New York Post and the New York Daily News, not at the same time,” Green said. He offered a special thanks to Project Director Karen Contino, who assisted him in making arrangements for the donations of cloth masks and hand sanitizer to Syosset/Woodbury establishments in need. In an interview, President Green explained that the Chamber

was very thankful that County Executive Curran was able to speak to local businesses about the issues that are affecting the community. “I thought she was open and candid, and willing to discuss any and all topics involving Syosset/ Woodbury,” he said. The County Executive presented proclamations to two of the longtime Syosset Woodbury Chamber members -- immediate past Chamber President Maureen Nickel, and the two-time Chamber Businessperson of the Year (2018 and 2020) Alan I. Goldberg. Chamber President Green summarized the accomplishments and leadership the Chamber has witnessed with Maureen Nickel and Alan Goldberg still serving as dedicated Board members in 2021: “Maureen did a wonderful job in guiding the Chamber during a most difficult and challenging period in 2020, I was happy to see her honored by Nassau County for her achievement. Alan is the hardest working person I know. Besides the businesses that he manages, he has also been an instrumental part of the Chamber with membership and the street fair. His citation from County Executive Curran for Business Person of the Year in 2020 was a just acknowledgement of those efforts,” Green said. Nassau County Legislator See page 14
