TOWN BLOOD DRIVE

Syosset students perform at Times Square celebration BY RIKKI MASSAND

Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, left, and Town Councilman Steve Labriola, right, with staff from New York Blood Center at the blood collection drive. To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, the Town of Oyster Bay partnered with New York Blood Center to host a Blood Collection Drive at the Hicksville Athletic Center. The donation drive was especially critical, as blood supplies have seriously

dwindled as a result of the pandemic. Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca also thanked the many residents who donated, as 32 pints of blood were collected, which can potentially save up to 96 lives.

Three students who attend Syosset Central School District were front and center for the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve countdown in New York City’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Alan Huang, a Syosset High School junior, Alex Chen, a sophomore at SHS, and South Woods Middle School 8th grader Katie Yan performed an exciting set of Wushu (Kung Fu martial arts) moves and stances on the stage at Times Square, broadcast for the world to see. The trio from Syosset presented several acrobatic moves and positions to music, and their featured performance was followed by a choreographed fan dance routine on the stage and broadcast, “where traditional Chinese art forms merged with American breakdancing.” The student athletes are trained locally at Sitan Tai Chi and Martial Arts Center in Syosset, by Sitan Chen, winner of 32 gold medals in national and international

Tai Chi competitions. Chen also led the opening New Year’s Eve performance, along with another of his students Olivia Rosenkrantz as the pair synchronized Tai Chi moves. Chen is also the chair of America Taiji Health Qigong Corp. and has received invitations to coach in Japan, Singapore, Korea, Philippines, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and the United States. Master Martial Artist Lynn Lin is the vice president of the Tai Chi Qigong Association of America, and of Sitan Tai Chi Center in Syosset. The invitation for Sitan Tai Chi Center students to perform was received from the Sino-American Friendship Association. There were auditions the performers had to pass through in order to be confirmed as New Year’s Eve performers. After that successful audition, eventually the final approval was granted.
