GCHS Varsity Rifle Team sends two to county championships
The Garden City High School Varsity Rifle team, the only co-ed varsity team in the High School, capped off another great year by sending two of its members to the Nassau County Championships: Madison Matarazzo and Kat Jushchenko. Kat shot a score of 188 out of 200, the highest score of the team’s season, and Madison shot a score of 160 out of 200.
Under the coaching of Mrs. Dubuke, the team received the Alex Baldwin Award for Most Improved Team. Kat Jushchenko received awards for her seasonal high average, as well as her placement in the annual coaches tournament. In addition to Madison and Kat, the other team members are Bradley Bostrom, Giuseppe Schettino and Joseph Pieraccini.
The five members of the GCHS Rifle team compete against seven other schools in Nassau County during the winter sports season. The team members practice five days a week at the Nassau County Range at Mitchell Field.

GCHS Men’s Varsity Fencing Team
GC finished the regular season with a 10-3 record and in third place out of ten competing teams. In the playoffs, GC beat Wheatley to make it to the semi-finals of the Team Championship Tournament. There, they lost to Jericho, but won the bronze medal bout against Oyster Bay. This year saw a huge increase in new recruits to the team to a total of 26 fencers. The fencing parents thank GC alum Coach Kevin Oliver for his dedication to the program. Kudos to the many fencing parents who supported the team throughout the season both home and at away meets. We all wish our seniors Christian Durante and Bryce Morrison good luck in college and in the future. Finally, season accolades were earned by a number of Trojans as follows:

Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team finishes the 2019 season 16-2
The Garden City High School Boys lacrosse team finished the 2019 season with a 16-2 record and the #6 overall national ranking based on inside lacrosse. This year’s team consisted of 21 seniors that played their last high school game but leave with many team and individual awards, including a Class B NY State championship in 2018.
We would like to say thank you to an amazing team, great coaches and a special group of 2019 seniors. Thanks for all the great memories and good luck as you move on to your next chapter in life. You will all do great things!

The Varsity Wings finished the 20182019 season with a winning record of 8-7-2. Girls 7th & 8th grade lacrosse teams compete in LISGYLL
Garden City Girls Lacrosse Club seventh and eighth grade girls competed in the highly competitive LISGYLL (Long Island Scholastic Girls Youth Lacrosse League) this spring.
The seventh grade girls won the division and played Bayville/Locust Valley in the Championship. In a tough nail biter, our GC girls came away with the win.
Niamh Pfaff (MVP) stopped a Bayville/Locust Valley shot with just 30 plus seconds to seal the win. Niamh played great from the first save in March to her final save in the Championship game. Great job by every girl.

Our eighth grade girls finished the season in 2nd place and played Wantagh
in the finals. Wantagh had not lost in several years. GC 8th was down 9-7 with under 3 minutes, to go. The girls wouldn’t quit. After back to back goals, the game was tied with under a minute to play. GC went ahead for good with the game winning goal with 30 seconds to play.

GCAA Spring 2019 Baseball and Softball
The Spring 2019 GCAA Baseball and Softball season kicked off on April 2. Although the weather was cold, the games heated up from the first pitch. We had over 850 players in the baseball and softball programs this spring making us one of the largest programs on Long Island.
The annual parade was Saturday, April 13. Players and coaches marched down Franklin Ave, onto 7th Street and ended up at the Gazebo. Prizes were awarded to the best banners. Several of the village trustees were on hand to throw out the first pitch.
Championship Saturday was June 8. The Minors division championship had the Pirates defeating the Yankees in a well-played game. The
Central Division champions were the Royals, and the Majors Division was won by the Athletics. All three games were played on the new turf field, which opened for play in midApril.
GCAA Baseball and Softball Night at Citi Field was June 14. 600 players and family members attended the event with players and coaches taking part in an on-field parade before the game. Although the Mets came up short, the evening was a huge success.
GCAA Baseball has entered U10, U11 and U12 all star teams into the Little League Tournament. Play began on June 22. Good luck to all the players and coaches.

GCAA Softballapalooza Weekend
On Saturday, GCAA Softball celebrated its 4th annual Softballapalooza Weekend, officially closing out the season. Over 100 families celebrated a tremendous season, with events beginning in the morning and lasting into the evening. Lunch was donated and catered by Garden City’s own Novita/Waterzooi and Town Meat Market. This years event included a K, 1, 2nd grade skills competition, and tournament games for our 3rd-4th grade teams, our 5th-6th grade teams, and our 14U tournament team. In addition to dozens of coach and parent volunteers, High School varsity team volunteers Caroline Flannigan, Emily Moody and Stacy Roukis assisted in umpiring games, and joining in the Tournament team game.
This year, GCAA Softball wrapped up the day with the Tim A. Gewert Memorial Tournament Games, an event celebrating Tim Gewert’s Spirit and
Enthusiasm. GCAA youth player Jane Supper was presented a “TAG Award” for demonstrating extraordinary Spirit and Enthusiasm over the season. The game was enthusiastically played by youth players of all ages and their parents. All players enjoyed a special BBQ catered dinner donation by Garden City’s Town Meat Market.
Thank you to all our amazing coaches and families who participated all season long. GCAA Fall Ball is currently scheduled for Sunday afternoons in the fall for ages 4th grade and UP. Registrations will go out mid-summer.

2019 GCAA Majors Championship Game
On June 8, Ernie Banks would have said, “What a great day for baseball. Let’s play two.” Although the GCAA Majors’ Royals and Athletics did not play two games, they played one great championship game. Each team had won their quarterfinal game, Royals over the Pirates 3-2 and A’s over the Dodgers 7-1. Next, it was the semifinals, where both teams scraped by; the Royals winning 9-8 over the Nationals and the A’s winning over the Red Sox 4-3. In the final championship game, the A’s
took a 6-2 lead into the last inning.
In the words of Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over,” and this game wasn’t over by any means. The Royals battled back with three runs in the last inning, falling just short.
The A’s prevailed in a 6-5 championship win! In the words of Tug McGraw, “Ya gotta believe”. The Athletics believed all year long.
