EAB hosts students, discusses ideas for sustainability BY RIKKI MASSAND The Village’s Environmental Advisory Board held an education-focused meeting on Wednesday, December 8 at Village Hall, in which current and former Garden City High School and college students participated, discussing their interests environmental and life sciences. Village Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan, who became the chair of the EAB in spring, introduced the topic of “sustainability” and asked the students and young adults participating to speak about their experience in the field. She led the youth-focused roundtable and connected students’ pursuits of environmental education and careers to potential applications at the local level.

Alexis, Erin and K.C., here in the village,” said Alvey, who now resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “It’s kind of a guide or rulebook of sorts for men to refer to when things don’t go as planned or go a little haywire when raising your kids.” Alvey said he started writing

The EAB heard from Anna Reilly, a Boston College graduate and professional consultant to state and local governments at firm Guidehouse. Reilly said she became interested in marine life and oceanography on her visits to Long Beach, recalling her fondness of dolphins. “When I got to college I was interested in learning more about the environment but I felt torn; while I liked science I personally did not want to become a scientist. I believe it’s a big misconception people have that sciences would be the only career path for those interested in Sustainability. I was fortunate that while Boston College does have a Geosciences program, I chose to pursue the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies program. While you can take courses in Oceanography and Geomorphology there are opportunities to study Law, Policy, Sociology, and really get to explore Sustainability and its practice or non-practice in our environment from many different lenses. In my work now, at Guidehouse, we’re a large consulting firm which has a sector called ES & I – Energy, Sustainability and Innovation – and in my sector involving state and local government clients we have a focus on Sustainability. For example the federal Build Back Better Infrastructure bill has enormous environmental ramifications for states and local governments which range from clean water to electrification. It’s work involving environmental issues that our company definitely has its eyes on,” Anna Reilly explained.

Former resident writes book on joys, struggles of “Daddyhood” BY GARY SIMEONE Raising children is one of the toughest, but also one of the greatest, things a parent can do. Robert Alvey, a former Garden City resident, met that challenge head-on by raising three daughters in the village with his wife, Suzie. Throughout the years, Alvey put together

a list of short stories about the trials, tribulations and tender moments of “daddyhood.” He recently compiled those stories together and turned it into a book “The Rulebook For Perfect Daddyhood.” “The book is basically a bunch of short stories on how we raised our three daughters,
