Schools security boost detailed at Board work session

DECK THE HALL

BY RIKKI N. MASSAND At the November 21 Board of Trustees’ meeting, Trustee Brian C. Daughney announced that the lease executed with Nassau County for the north side of Stewart Field, including the restoration and signage for the historic (William K. Vanderbilt) Long Island Motor Parkway, should finally be approved by the Nassau County Legislature a few days prior to Thanksgiving. Trustee Daughney said this should move along the village’s plan to create up to 45 parking spaces, as the Board had discussed for the property to alleviate parking shortage for families and teams using the athletic fields. He called the usage of Stewart Field “a half-field, half-parking use.” “The County approved the plans long ago, and it has taken a long, long time, for the Legislature to vote,” Trustee Daughney said. There’s more ahead for refurbishing the entranceways and appearance of Stewart Field, as well as other village parks. Judy Courtney, a member of the volunteer Rec. Commission (Board of Commissioners of Recreational and Cultural Affairs) updated her fellow East residents at the November 19 EPOA meeting held at the

Girl Scouts helped deck the halls over the holiday weekend, decorating the Christmas tree in the Village Hall lobby with ornaments. Mayor Theresa Trouvé and Trustees John Delany and Colleen Foley joined the festivities. Thank you to Julia Pontone, Anna Padala, Naya Lele with little sister Anya, Eloise Stimmler and Riya Motwani, Girl Scouts from Troop 1437, and Kayla Trongard, Cameron Quinlan and Julia Donelan from Junior Troop 1354 for helping to bring some Christmas spirit to Village Hall! At its work session on Tuesday, December 3, the Garden City Public Schools’ Board of Education listened to remarkable progress in upgrades to schools’ safety and security throughout the districts’ schools. Security consultant Don Flynn, president of Suffolk County-based firm Covert Investigations, said the measures taken by GCUFSD to bolster security district-wide “are not about being paranoid, just being well-prepared and putting a stop to complacency.” Intervention and knowing when to do so is the protocol he stressed to Garden City Board of Education trustees and the school district administration. One scenario that Flynn reported on to the school board might be student or other individual positioning themself for either suicide or an act of violence and a threat to public safety. Flynn spoke about collaborating with Garden City administrators to get all teachers and staff in the district to be aware of and recognize the indicators as they’re in contact with the student population. Flynn said in 2018 he read the 400-page report produced in the aftermath of the school shooting tragedy in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He told the school board in Garden City this week that it carried similar information -- indications -- and references that are eerily similar to reports from the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and the 2007 Virginia Tech campus shooting that left 32 people dead. New York State’s “Red Flag law” gun protection legislation, also known as the extreme risk protection order law, came into effect on August 24, 2019. According to NY.gov, the state governmental website, the new law “prevents individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing any kind of firearm. The Red Flag Law provides all necessary procedural safeguards See page 47
