WPOA group offers alternate plan for firehouse renovation
CHRISTMAS BELLS
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
Christmas bells were ringing outside Kings Market on Saturday, November 28th, as members of the Mineola Garden City Rotary Club and Garden City Boy Scouts collected money for the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive.
Village Board extends license agreement with Chamber BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
At a special meeting on December 1st the Village Board of Trustees voted in favor of extending the Garden City Chamber of Commerce’s license to use the Toll House building, its headquarters located at 230 Seventh Street. The Board also agreed to provide one year at
a reduced monthly rent of $100 due to the pandemic’s economic impacts. The regular use fee is $434 per month under the terms of the prior agreement. Technically the Chamber’s use agreement expired on December 1, the same day as the Board’s special meeting held this week. The trustees’ vote to approve
the extension and reduced rent was not unanimous as Trustee Stephen Makrinos expressed his concerns over “opening up Pandora’s Box” and setting a bad precedent, because it could lead residents facing economic hardships to approach the village for forgiveness or reductions in their own property See page 27
At a special meeting of the Garden City Board of Trustees on December 1st, members of the Western Property Owners’ firehouse subcommittee gave a presentation on alternate plans for the Village’s Fire Station No. 2, which is slated for reconstruction. The firehouse, located at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Edgemere Road, is 90 years old. The committee’s presentation was met with some skepticism and counter-comments by Board members as well as consultants the Board has already hired for the project. Representatives of Bay Shore-based architecture firm PKAD and Cameron Engineering of Woodbury were represented at the meeting. PKAD was represented by its principal, Philipp Kampf, and architect Frank Gucciardo. Gucciardo had presented his firm’s ideas at to the Board of Trustees at a meeting in July. The Western POA’s special fire station subcommittee, formed in 2019, had approached the Village through Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch, for more information on the firehouse plans presented to the Board by PKAD early this year. The committee wanted information on the specifics of constructing a new building versus renovating the current one, especially regarding the dimensions of bays to suit GCFD fire apparatus. Members of the subcommittee include former Garden City Historical Society trustee Maureen Dellacona and architect and West resident Cosmo Veneziale, who is also a member of the village’s Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) and former member of the 2006 Mayor’s Committee to Save St. Paul’s as well as the Mayor’s Zoning Review Committee. Veneziale has over 35 years’ experience in building restoration, landmark preservation, high-end residential design as well as industrial and commercial projects. He and his firm, headquartered in midtown Manhattan, were awarded the Lucy G. Moses Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy earlier this year. Subcommittee members noted the March 7, 2020 walkthrough they and other WPOA members had at Fire Station No. 2 and the observations made then. First, WPOA President RoseAnn Vernice addressed the Village See page 27
