THE WINNING KICK
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND At its November 21 meeting the Board of Trustees voted to extend the deadline for residents to apply to receive the original “hard copy” Building Department folders for their property to July 1, 2020, a sixmonth extension due to the many folders remaining the department has hoped to clear out of Village Hall office space during 2019. “To date our department has received about 1,400 requests. With the help of interns the department has at this time we have actually issued approximately 500 of those back to residents. This is a great task but we’re trying to move forward with it. I would ask for the Board’s opinion on extending the request date from December 31 -we have only received the 1,400 requests and we have about 7,000 parcels,” Building Department Superintendent Giuseppe Giovanniello told the Board last Thursday. Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch said that a night prior, at the Western Property Owners’ Association meeting on November 20, several residents commented to him and thanked the village after receiving the original property folders and the information they contain -- almost a personalized ‘slice of history’ from the village. “Regardless of the ages of the houses residents said they were all fascinated by what’s actually inside the See page 50

Board concerned over National Grid operations, future BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
Garden City High School’s Varsity Football team won a thrilling Nassau County Championship game 16-14 against MacArthur. With 38 seconds left in the game, and trailing by one point, kicker Chase Gardi, above, kicked the winning field goal off a hold by Luke Schmitt. The win marks the fourth straight Nassau County title, and advanced the team to the Long Island Championship.
Due to a looming threat from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to revoke National Grid’s state license, at its November 21 meeting the Garden City Village Board of Trustees held a special work session updating the community on National Grid’s operations within the village and what the future of the utility, or any gas company that could potentially replace it, can hold for local customers. Trustee Brian Daughney’s persistence on National Grid’s local operations appeared to be prompted by his concerns over South Avenue in particular. He noted that from Adelphi University up to the Garden City Country Club there are “massive holes in the ground covered by metal plates, they have been there for months and we don’t even know when they are going to finish working there.” Daughney told his fellow trustees National Grid may have no incentive to finish any such underground work in Garden City or complete its projects if the state revokes their operating permits. Trustee John Delany explained what he has learned in recent conversations with representatives from National Grid. He says National Grid has promised Garden City officials they will not be starting any new major gas line projects in the village, but what they will be doing is ‘anything on an emergency basis that has to do with service.’ Delany asked Garden City’s Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi to follow up on the plates covering roadways in the village “and get that done post-haste.” Delany explained that Governor Cuomo would not just immediately “pull” the operating permit of National Grid because his office would have to enter into a legal proceeding and demonstrate how National Grid was responsible for a violation of just cause, “assuming that National Grid’s attorneys would believe the Governor has cause to pull the permit.” “I think most of us in this room realize Gov. Cuomo would be doing this for political reasons as he does not like National Grid, he does not like Con Edison and he does See page 51
