Library seeks improvement grants The Garden City Public Library Board has been working to obtain outside funds to implement future improvements, including an updated Children’s Room. Thanks to support from Garden City’s two state legislators, additional funding up to $200,000 is possible through the State and Municipal (SAM) Grant program, which can be applied to capital improvements. The Library was recently nominated by Assemblyman Ed Ra to receive a $50,000 State and Municipal (SAM) Grant for capital improvements. In addition, on November 7, the Library received confirmation that it was nominated for a $150,000 SAM Grant by Senator Kevin Thomas for capital improvements to the Library’s Children’s Room. Library Director Marianne Malagon said, “We are very grateful to Senator Thomas and Assemblyman Ra for their help. It will help us to achieve our goals of redesigning the space.” The Library had previously amassed funds for this project, totaling over $145,000, paid in legislative aid to the Library from New York State. However, the Library Board and Director felt this would only cover cosmetic changes and not an updated Children’s Room. The Director is currently meeting with architects to develop plans to propose to the Library Board for approval. Library Chair J. Randolph See page 41

Library bathrooms project sparks Village, GCPL exchange

TOUCHDOWN!

At its meeting on Veteran’s Day Monday, November 11, the Garden City Public Library Board of Trustees discussed the completion of the first-floor bathrooms’ renovation work. Village Trustee Colleen Foley, who was appointed the Board of Trustees’ liaison to the Library Board in April, announced that village employees would come in to review and re-evaluate the mirrors placed in the refurbished restrooms as the ones they are outfitted now “may not be the best choice” of product because it is higher and doesn’t tilt. There’s an overarching effort to standardize appearances and functions of public restrooms across the village-owned facilities in Garden City, according to Foley. “The GCPL bathrooms are complete but some things came up about the bathrooms. I spoke to one of the other village trustees who was on a tour of village projects and noticed details last week. We do need to have a mirror on the walls that is able to tilt. I am not sure that this mirror model in there now is the best choice. I spoke with Superintendent of Public Works Joseph DiFrancisco and I believe we may be looking into a different option. The mirrors could be temporarily removed while bathrooms could continue being open for use. There is also a lock situation with one bathroom door that we’ll take care of, and I’m unaware if there is another need to be taken care of right away,” she said. Another issue identified despite the infrastructure project being done are the hand blowers, with height and strength/power to be investigated. Trustee Foley says over the period of the next month, these and other adjustments could be made. “There are pros and cons to raising or lowering things with the restrooms but we are going to need to do some minor re-tweaking in them,” she said. Foley commented on her experience with plans for bathroom renovations as she oversaw many similar projects as a Garden City Board of Education trustee. At the Village Board of Trustees’ meeting four days earlier, on November 7, DiFrancisco spoke about the renovations as he presented slides to the trustees. The Board and residents in attendance viewed images of improvements including new tiles at the children’s restroom, the adult restroom on GCPL’s first floor, as well as the handicapped-accessible/family restroom (two restrooms See page 41
