Public hearing planned on weed sales in village BY RIKKI MASSAND

Garden City High School’s Varsity Football continued its winning streak by blanking Mepham 49-0 on October 16th. The team has a points scored record of 264-14 this season. The Trojans take on MacArthur, which is also undefeated, at home on Saturday, October 23rd at 2 p.m.

The Village of Garden City plans to hold a public hearing on whether to allow “cannabusiness” to operate in the village. The public hearing follows New York State’s legalization of marijuana for recreational use by adults on April 30th, and the state’s recent creation of a state Cannabis Control Board to regulate the new industry. During the Garden City Board of Trustees’ October 7 meeting, Trustee John Delany suggested that the Village schedule a public hearing on the issue of recreational marijuana and “cannabusiness” within village boundaries. “I believe we have until December 31, 2021 to opt out of having (permitting) marijuana businesses and stores with differentiations and classifications. I would like the Board to hold a public hearing on that so that if we decide to opt out, then the public hearing would be held and the village can present an appropriate law as our Village Attorney (Peter Bee) already started to work on this. The problem is that if we do not opt out and we don’t like the regulations New York State puts forward, I believe after December 31

At its October 7 meeting, the Garden City Board of Trustees awarded several bids related to the municipal street lighting network. All lighting, structural and electrical components are to be ordered on an “as-needed basis, based upon unit cost for an approximate cost of $66,000,” according to the village. Village Administrator

Ralph V. Suozzi discussed the bids awarded, noting that on average the Village of Garden City spends approximately $66,000 on street lighting-related items each year. “Right now the 2021-2022 budget only has $18,000 in it because the materials and supply budget line that we use to fund the particular street lighting components is also used for items such as the new speeding signage we are installing

on New Hyde Park Road as well as one ordered for Stewart Avenue at Rockaway. This line item has been depleted in our budget and at a future meeting, I will be coming back to the Board to ask for a related transfer of funds for the lighting components. What we need for right now is funded by the $18,000 in the budget but we then need to stabilize this line

Last Wednesday’s public work session of the Garden City School Board focused on the mental health and the social/emotional support of students. A presentation was given on how each of the schools in the district have implemented community outreach, school support and professional development programs. Representatives from Northwell Health’s Mineola Behavioral Health Center were also present at the meeting. Dr. Kusum Sinha, superintendent of schools, gave a background on the mental health & wellness committee that was started two
