Legislator addresses village traffic problems for WPOA audience

BY RIKKI MASSAND A longtime Nassau County official has made the Village of Garden City’s traffic concerns a priority, since most issues involve county-owned roads Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer spoke at the Western Property Owners’ Association meeting held at Homestead School on Wednesday, September 29. Much of the discussion at the meeting centered around the possibility of locating speed and red-light cameras in the village. The County has authority to decide some of what has been proposed for traffic calming, however items like a camera to capture red light violations are New York State programs. In New York State, the vehicle and traffic law permits red light cameras only within cities with a population above one million. New Hyde Park Road has consistently ranked as an issue

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau, at 223 Stewart Ave., Garden City, will once again host its “Pumpkin Patch” autumn festival. The annual event—with thousands of pumpkins, fall decorations, and delicious home-baked treats for sale—will be open daily through October 31 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays).

Ex WPOA pres calls for GC school district expands mental cooperation between health services with partnership POAs, FABGC BY GARY SIMEONE

Over the summer, the Garden City School District formed a partnership with Northwell Health, to help expand its mental health program. It is part of the district’s ongoing focus on the mental health and social emotional wellness of its students. Janine Villez, Director of Pupil Personnel Services (PPS)

in the district, was one of the staff members who helped to connect the two parties. “I’m very excited about this new partnership with Northwell Health, and believe that it will provide the necessary support for students and parents in the Garden City District,” said Villez. “It has been a difficult two years for students and adults alike as far as mental health issues are

concerned. By partnering up with Northwell, this allows us to provide additional psychiatric support to those who need it.” She said that as a result of the partnership, students will have access to the Behavioral Health Clinic in Mineola. “Any students suffering mental health issues or an ongoing crisis, can access the See page 42
