Cathedral Nursery to close down at end of school year

ONE FINAL YEAR

BY RIKKI N. MASSAND

and administrators will return to the board of education with recommendations “whether or not this would be something we pursue.” A media release in August from the Office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo explained the new policy. New York Lieutenant Governor

On September 20 the seven members of Cathedral Nursery School’s board of directors unanimously agreed to end school operations and close down the school once the 2019-2020 school year -- the final year of a license agreement with the Village of Garden City for its occupancy of the cottages at St. Paul’s -- concludes, on June 30, 2020. In July of 2018, the school’s administration signed a binding license agreement with Garden City to occupy the cottages for the next two school years, last year and the current school year, which included a stipulation that “the Nursery School agrees not to seek any further extensions or any new or similar license for the current site or any other Village-owned facilities.” The Board of Trustees approved that license agreement through June 2020 at its meeting on July 25, 2018. With a letter and email to its parent community dated Tuesday September 24, 2019, Cathedral Nursery’s Director Diane Cina, Assistant Director Monica Schoelle and Administrator Cathy Sammon announced the school’s permanent closure at the end of this academic year. “After fifty-two years, this is truly the most difficult letter we have had to put together. We deeply regret that we have made the decision to close our doors at the end of this school year, due to circumstances beyond our control. In an effort to be completely transparent and be fiscally responsible, we cannot in good conscience move forward with the planned transition to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul’s (just south of the village). While we were hopeful and it appeared promising, after several meetings, we now feel their project will take more than one year before they begin to build their new school. Having been denied the additional time here at the cottages, we had hoped to make the best of a temporary space for a short period of time. Now with the uncertainty of a definitive time frame, we are forced to come to this decision. As difficult as this is for us, we recognize the need to give you adequate time to register your child in a new school for the 2020-21 school year,” Tuesday’s letter stated. Many parents have attended recent Village Board of Trustees’

Should school buses have STOP-arm cameras? BY RIKKI N. MASSAND At the Board of Education’s September 24 meeting Schools Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha explained that the district has engaged in conversations with Village of Garden City officials, “to see what is feasible and what’s not, and how to go about it” regarding new legislation passed by New York

State August 6 to allow installations of “STOP-arm” cameras on school buses, an effort to curb problems of motorists passing stopped buses. School Board President Angela Heineman confirmed that the district will thoroughly investigate opportunities to outfit school buses with these cameras. She said Dr. Sinha
