year’s topics include surgical and reconstructive options for patients; updates on the hereditary nature of breast cancer; strategies for balancing work with cancer treatment and how to approach nutrition when fighting cancer. For the 2018-2019 school year, Garden City Public Schools has hired Diane Johnson as its Interim Director of Guidance at a per diem rate of $750. The resolution to hire Johnson was approved during a special session portion of the Garden City Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, September 5, just prior to an hour-long public work session. Johnson received a contract for the full remainder of this academic year, retroactive by a few days (September 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019). The board unanimously accepted her appointment and confirmed other staff to positions in the district last Wednesday. Garden City Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha, in her first September meeting of the school board last week, explained a difficulty that arose to replace the former Director of Guidance for Garden City, Gina Christel. The school district administration attempted to get a head start on finding a permanent replacement to fill the position but according to Sinha, the timing over the summer months led them into hurdles trying to find either an interim director or a permanent employee. Johnson was the administration’s recommended candidate for the school year, which began just last week, and her contract did not require a waiver. “Diane has over 30 years’ experience as a counselor, she has done several interim director appointments in leading school districts -- most recently as (interim curriculum associate for Guidance at Jericho High School, and (as department of guidance chairperson) in East Williston Public Schools and Glen Cove. She is a college advisor and she was working as a director of guidance in the Lawrence Union Free School District from 1993 through 2007, until her retirement in 2007-2008,” Dr. Sinha announced at the September 5 school board work session. Johnson began her career in education as an elementary grades’ teacher over 40 years ago. In the November 2017 Jericho High School Counseling Center newsletter,
