The Garden City Library Board of Trustees considering reintroducing an administrative position of assistant library director with its 2020-’21 budget. At its September 9 meeting, the Library Board concurred on a recommendation from Board Chairman J. Randolph Colahan to create the assistant director role, a second-in-command to Library Director Marianne Malagon, who took the position in mid-summer of 2018. Colahan specified that this would not necessarily mean an additional position to the library’s budget for personnel in 2020-’21, but there may be a candidate from within GCPL staff who moves into the role. “In the mid-2000s we had an assistant library director and it worked out, until 2009 when we had to have a budget crunch and we eliminated the assistant director position. We have had several directors since then and they have done their jobs, and we accepted it --now with Marianne we have a new director who is doing an amazing job. Unfortunately the amount of work is overwhelming, so we are looking at preliminary numbers and we can do it perhaps from within, and although it is exploratory now we are hoping to propose for the next budget (2020-’21) that we have an assistant director,” Colahan said. Malagon thanked board members for their consideration of the position. Malagon and the Library Board have worked with village officials to have security and technology additions in place by the year’s end. Village Trustee Colleen Foley, Board of Trustees’ liaison to the GCPL Board, commented on Monday night that the security contract bid would be considered a “mini-bid” by village administration with vendors that are “off state contract” to be considered, and there will be a competitive bid process. The bid underwent a formal review by the Library Board, the Board of Trustees’ Legal Committee (Trustee Brian Daughney and a former GCPL Chair, Trustee John Delany) and Village Attorney Bee, Ready, Fishbein, Hatter & Donovan. “My understanding is for the security bid it’s gone back and forth to develop. At this point in time I believe the bid would be issued within the next two weeks,” Foley said. She added that a related security improvement for the library was its pursuit of a
