BACK TO SCHOOL BEAUTIES

Village resident had over 80,000 bees living in his house BY GARY SIMEONE

Longtime Garden City resident Tom Egel was surprised to find out that he was coexisting with tens of thousands of honeybees in his Kildare Road home. The 91-year-old man said that the bees had taken up residence in a ceiling in his foyer for over forty years.

“There had probably been 80 to 90,000 bees living in there from generation to generation, and my family and I were totally unaware how bad the issue was,” said Egel, a retired hardware store owner. Egel said that he remembered how his daughter, Mary Ann Guida, would complain about one or two

honeybees flying around when she was in school decades ago. “When she would come home from school, she’d always complain about the bees swarming around the front door, but I would never imagine the extent of the problem.” He said that it was a mail-

With Garden City schools opening for one of the strangest years ever, the Garden City Board of Education heard a report from the Director of Technology on how the schools are faring with implementing online learning. During a session that was held in the High School auditorium and broadcast over Google Meet on September 9th, Director of Technology Dr. Rita Melikian told the board about the evolving technology plans. In the first full week of September, Garden City Public Schools distributed 2,200 Chromebooks and 100 iPads to students for their schoolwork-related usage (the iPads are for hybrid and remote learning students enrolled in the district). All district classrooms are equipped with microphones/speaker systems

to enhance the audio for remote and hybrid classrooms. The GCUFSD Technology department has also assisted with cameras in classrooms and offices in the district where those were needed. “Over our first few days of school, we were doing a lot of Help Desk support for those students who are learning from home and having technical issues. As the Board knows, this summer we completed our technology infrastructure upgrades for the four-year project timeline. New switches have been installed for Stewart and Stratford and Locust, Hemlock and Homestead -- they all have brandnew switches,” Melikian commented on Wednesday. The bandwidth at Garden City high School was upgraded to 2 GB over the summer, completed just prior to the first day See page 48
