Bagel expert brings his culinary skills to Nassau Blvd. store BY GARY SIMEONE
Dennis (Domingo) Severiano, considers himself to be a connoisseur of bagels. He has been in the bagel making business for nearly fifty years, and is currently the main bagel-maker at ‘The Bagels’ store located at 17
Nassau Boulevard. “I’ve been making bagels for a long time and what makes them special and unique is that I make them the old fashioned way,” said Severiano. “I use only the best ingredients and I tend to every bagel that comes out of the oven.” Severiano said that after
he immigrated to the United States from Spain, he got his first job making bagels at the H&H Bagel store in Manhattan. “I was already entrenched in the bakery business as a kid in Spain making pastries, cakes and cookies. When I See page 28
As concerns over the Delta variant of the coronavirus and higher daily COVID case rates sweeps the nation, the Village of Garden City will be discussing the dismantling of several Franklin Avenue restaurants’ outdoor dining structures. The Board of Trustees first began discussing the structures at its July meeting. At that time, the restaurants Revel, Novita, Waterzooi, and Calogero’s were mentioned in a board agenda item in which the Village sought “to terminate agreements for the use of village property (parking lot space) which are set to expire on December 31, 2021.” The matter was tabled during the July meeting, but is expected to be discussed again during the Board’s August 19th meeting. Garden City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dennis Donnelly is hopeful that the Village Board will be considerate of the healthy and safety protocols that increased outdoor dining to increase the safety of both patrons and restaurant staffs. “It’s become clear with the Delta variant being so rampant now and it looks like people are much more in-tune with eating outdoors than indoors, and that is not something that will go away in the near future. Villages all over Long Island have been extending outdoor dining for the foreseeable future, and we are very hopeful that our village does the same. The tent/covered structures for outdoor dining is the lifeblood of these restaurants, and in the past two weeks it’s become the case more so as people want to eat outside than inside,” Donnelly explained. The Chamber and the restaurants have asked for the village to continue the originally-enacted licensure for the outdoor dining structures on village parking lot properties to remain up until the end of 2021. Ronald DiGangi, owner of Calogero’s Italian cuisine at 919 Franklin Avenue, spoke with the The Garden City News on Wednesday, August 11 and said customers coming into Calogero’s are increasingly asking for the outdoor seating option -- and at times they won’t dine inside the restaurant when the outdoor seating is already booked or full. “There are a couple of times when people have a reservation for outdoors, and with parties that were outside the seating was full so the people have cancelled reservations because they would not be outside. There are customers scared to be inside again -- we See page 29
