Village weighs costs, space needs with Library Friends’ excess books

6TH UNDEFEATED SEASON

BY RIKKI N. MASSAND At its meeting on Monday, August 5, the Library Board of Trustees engaged with its new Village Board liaison, Trustee Colleen Foley, in a dialogue about control of Garden City Public Library interior space, discarding books not sold during biannual Friends’ group book sales, and potential cost factors including sanitation and maintenance that will impact Village budgets.

Two Village Trustees’ tour of Library prompts speculation

The Library is what it is today because of your commitment and dedication; your interactions created a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more and become more, and you are an excellent leader.” Chairman Colahan added his own congratulatory words: “On behalf of the Library Board and staff, for all your

In 2014 and 2015, Garden City Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch was the village liaison to the Library Board, before Trustee John Delany filled that position (subsequently Board liaison roles were abolished under former Mayor Daughney, until this past April). On Wednesday, July 31, Trustee Foley and Bolebruch took an internal tour of the library accompanied by Library Director Malagon. However, members of the Library Board, hearing about the tour, strenuously objected to it, and questioned whether the Village Board of Trustees was issuing directives to the Library Board. In an interview with The Garden City News on August 6, the day after the library board’s monthly meeting, Bolebruch said the tour came together as he talked with Foley and she suggested they go immediately July 31, with Bolebruch leaving work a little early that afternoon. The library trustees learned afterwards that Bolebruch and Trustee Foley asked several questions of Malagon, commented on her future layout ideas, and offered some feedback. Bolebruch says any perceptions of he and Foley “having any hidden agendas” with a tour July 31 are wildly misguided. “Why did we have the tour? It’s simple, as I was liaison to the Library Board (for two years). We got a lot of great things done. Trustee Foley is the liaison now and she is looking at things at GCPL, but she doesn’t have as much history to why things at GCPL were done or laid out. Over time she would give me a call and ask about things with the library. We talk all the time, and then she called to ask me if I would like to come over there to see, with her, how the library was right now. Personally I am not a big library person, I never check go by to check out books but my wife must take out 30 books a month sometimes. I had not gone in for a while and I was excited to get to see so many of the programs and spaces, especially our youth and children’s sections. Marianne really has fabulous ideas
