Plans for a replacement of Garden City’s Fire Station No. 2, at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Edgemere Road in the west, were presented during the Board of Trustees’ meeting held via Zoom on July 16. Costs for the project may end up exceeding $10 million. The size and scale of the proposal have driven the costs for a station redesign up by about three to four million dollars from plans discussed five months ago during a February Board of Trustees’ meeting. Garden City Fire Chief Thomas Strysko introduced the latest round of considerations by stating that Village Fire Station No. 2 is nearly 90 years old, and that 90 years ago with the manual pumps attached to open-air wagons there were different considerations and specifications for accommodating the firefighting apparatus servicing a growing place like this village. “Looking forward to the next 90 years of fire service in the Village of Garden City, we’re looking to design a firehouse that would anticipate any kinds of new developments that could be required for fire service. To reference what Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch mentioned for assets -- if you buy a new computer today you need to consider this a purchase for tomorrow and the related updates as well. From the feasibility perspective we went into evaluating the actual design and build drawings and then determined some adjustments needed to be made in order to accommodate a longer fire truck as the presentation explains,” Chief Strysko said. PKAD Architects & Design’s Frank Gucciardo, who first presented on potential options for replacing Garden City Fire Station No. 2 back at the Board of Trustees (in-person) meeting held February 26, 2020, explained the schematic phase of this project as of mid-July. Last Thursday Gucciardo said there’s design reasons for enlarging the proposed new station with his presentation and side-by-side comparisons of space and scale, “with budgeting considerations reflected for the larger footprint.” Another focus for this PKAD presentation was putting the fire engines’ departure and approach routes for the station. According to Gucciardo the original width of the bay exam-

The recent quarantine and Covid-19 pandemic may have slowed them down, but the girls from Cadette Troop #1242 were determined to make sure their “Take Action Project” was completed. The troop built wooden bird houses and donated them to the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. This past Monday, the girls- all masked up- met up at the sanctuary to help put up the completed birdhouses. With the help of Sanctuary Volunteer, Tim Martens, the girls successfully completed their Outdoor Journey. Photo by Regina Moran
School Board develops safety plan BY RIKKI N. MASSAND The Garden City Board of Education discussed its proposed District Safety Plan at its annual reorganization meeting, held at the High School auditorium on Wednesday, July 8, and virtually. Although the school year could look greatly different for
the 2020-21 school year, the plan was created to meet a state mandate under the NYS Safe Schools Against Violence in Education legislation. It addresses a variety of security issues, as well as a new section on year on pandemic safety. The 30-day public comment period for the plan as proposed
