Andy Foundation plans to build new play area
ROCK OF AGES
Hopes for future Yard Sales BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
As reported in The Garden City News on July 17, 2015, Heineman was initially elected to be board president when the school board reorganized that summer, after the sudden resignation of Board President Barbara Trapasso, effective June 30, 2015. On July 8, 2015 a school board comprised of four trustees (after Trapasso resigned) re-organized and elected Heineiman as the board president and Tom Pinou as vice president. Each trustee has remained in their respective board leadership positions since July 2015. During this month’s meeting
Two months after community members expressed concerns and over the “final” Andy Foundation Yard Sale, held on Saturday May 11 at the Fieldhouse at St. Paul’s, the Foundation continues to be prominent in the village and all over Long Island as it endeavors to build a new playground in Islandia, at the nonprofit equine therapy center Pal-O-Mine, by late September. Several dozen Village of Garden City residents are among the volunteers assisting the Andy Foundation, with the Yard Sale at St. Paul’s serving as a marquee event for Long Islanders for over 15 years. As summer progresses more volunteers are welcome to inquire and help with its current project and commit time on the “build day” of the playground; Saturday, September 28. According to the Foundation’s press release which was published in The Garden City News in June 2019, “Pal-OMine provides services to children of all ages with physical and emotional challenges, and The Andy Foundation has been an avid supporter of their outstanding efforts for more than a decade. The new playground will provide a wonderful, accessible recreation space for youngsters of all abilities, and has already been in the planning stages for several months.” The Andy Foundation’s prominence in Garden City won’t slow down with its Islandia project this year. Announced just last month, at the Garden City Historical Society’s annual Fundraising Benefit, which carries the theme of “Local Heroes” whose local organizations and efforts work on behalf of children. The gala, which is also celebrating the 150th anniversary of A.T. Stewart’s founding of Garden City, is scheduled for 7 pm to 11 pm on Friday night September 20, inside the Garden City Hotel. One of this year’s GCHS honorees is Jill Palmieri, president and founder of the Andy Foundation. In 2004 she

School Board reorganizes for 2019-20 BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
At its annual reorganization meeting held on Tuesday, July 2, Garden City Board of Education President Angela Heineman was re-elected to serve as president of the school board for 2019-2020, with a unanimous vote by school district trustees. The upcoming year marks the fifth consecutive year Heineman holds the position of school board president. After the reorganization portion of the board’s July 2 meeting, Heineman reflected on the opportunities this role has provided her with in the broader Garden City community: “I want to thank everybody for
their support in selecting me to continue as president, and I look at being president of this incredible school board and part of the leadership in our school district as an incredible honor and a privilege. I thank everyone for their confidence in me and their support,” she said. Also re-elected to his longtime school board position on July 2 is Board Vice President Tom Pinou, who was nominated to retain the VP role by School Board Trustee William Holub. Holub, along Trustee Stephanie Granville, was re-elected to a schools trustee position in the district’s election in mid-May.
