This week, the 555 Stewart Avenue apartment building project was scheduled for the Village Board of Trustees to vote on July 16 on granting its Final Site Plan approval. The 4.65-acre site on the north side of Stewart Avenue has been a vacant lot for decades, used only by the Village in prior winters to store and place mounds of plowed snow from municipal roadways. Earlier this month Garden City’s Building Department received the application for Final Site Plan approval of 555 Stewart Avenue. Official municipal recommendations for the revised project’s approval came this year from the Architectural Design Review Board on February 26, the Planning Commission on March 11, and lastly the Zoning Board of Appeals on June 30, 2020. The project to build 150 premium rental apartments in Garden City has been significantly altered from what was originally presented to the community at multiple Village Board meetings and public hearings two years ago, from late 2017 through July 10, 2018. At that time, the Board voted 7 to 1 in favor of granting a permit for designing a multiple-dwelling facility at this (now R-T zone) location. The Board had granted a zoning change for the area of 555 Stewart Avenue, the R-T district, at its June 21, 2018 meeting (reported in The Garden City News June 29, 2018). At the Eastern Property Owners’ Association meeting on Monday night July 13, Trustee John Delany delivered an update on the much-anticipated 555 Stewart Avenue commercial project, a three-story apartment complex slated for the easternmost vicinity of Garden City, adjacent to Ring Road and the Roosevelt Field Mall. “The project has made its way through the Zoning Board, the ADRB and Village Planning Commission. It was originally for one building and now will be two buildings, still the 150 units. As originally described to the Board (in 2018) it was going to have 20 one-bedroom units; 115 two-bedroom units and 15 three-bedroom units. The owner/developer has now put forth the revised site plan with 67 one-bedroom units and 74 two-bedroom units with 9 three-bedroom units. It appears that the new owners/

This past week, the Garden City Pool opened its doors for the summer season. With an altered check in process, members reserve their spots for mornings or afternoons. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with new social distancing policies in place, the Pool was actually able to welcome residents this summer. While the new reservation process has been an adjustment, residents are fortunate to have the pool open this season. Photo by Regina Moran
Village preparing for new water rules BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
The New York State Department of Health is expected to set new standards for drinking water by the end of July after several delays, but according to officials, the village has begun taking steps to meet the new regulations.
During the Eastern Property Owners’ Association annual meeting on Monday, July 13, Trustee Mark Hyer delivered an update on the planning for remediation of the drinking water supply, including the removal of 1,4 dioxane at multiple village wells using the previously purchased Advanced Oxidation
