Lawsuit against MTA for monster poles dismissed by judge

SUMMER AT THE POOL

BY RIKKI MASSAND The Village of Garden City’s legal battle against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority over the placement of 93-foot-tall steel poles lining the LIRR Third Track project was dismissed on June 30th by State of New York Supreme Court Judge Diccia PinedaKirwin. Following the dismissal, questions on the village’s potential for further legal recourse remain unanswered. The Village’s lawsuit over the sizable utility poles and their placement, lining the Estates’ section and towering over residential streets, had requested a new environmental review process that includes “proper input and comment” about the utilities’ arrangement. Of the total 127-foot height of each pole, 93 feet of them are above-ground and visible in the village.

School Board reorganizes, FABGC hosts Town Hall session new Vice President elected BY RIKKI MASSAND

On Tuesday, July 13, the For a Better Garden City group held a Town Hall meeting to discuss traffic issues in the Village. The session was held both in-person at the Senior Center and over Zoom. The featured panelists included Garden City Mayor Cosmo Veneziale, Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan, Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson and Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi. Mayor Veneziale explained that there are Nassau Countyowned roads that are major

thoroughfares including Stewart Avenue, Cathedral Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Nassau Boulevard and several others. The Village roads including tertiary roads (side streets) are owned and maintained by the Village of Garden City. Police Commissioner Jackson said one of the GCPD’s biggest priorities is traffic enforcement. “I always look for our efforts in reducing the number of accidents and making the village and roads safer. Speed enforcement is a very import-

ant part of that and speed enforcement has a lot of components. It’s not just ticketing for the person who is speeding, but it’s an approach to curbing aggressive driving -- aggressive drivers are speeders. In traffic situations aggressive drivers may not be speeding but they will cut in and out and tailgate you, but they are trying to pick up speed. While it is hard to get a speeder, we do pull over cars for the other traffic violations that often lead to speeding... So far this year the police department See page 45

BY RIKKI MASSAND The Garden City Board of Education retains all five trustees for the 2021-22 academic year, with one formal change to note for the board: a new vice president. At the annual reorganization meeting held on Tuesday July 6, School Board President William C. Holub was nominated for a second year as board president by Trustee Tom Pinou. Holub was then unanimously approved, 5 to 0, to serve as board president during the upcoming school year. After the retirement of Board President Angela Heineman in June 2020, Holub ascended to the board presidency as the district entered 2020-21. After having served as a school board trustee for 12 years, Heineman did not seek re-election in the spring 2020 election as Trustee Matthew Wakeham earned the Central Property Owners Association nomination and then was elected 14 months ago. Heineman held the position of board president for five years. See page 40
