Rec Comm says pool could open July 11 at earliest

GOODBYE TO GCHS

BY RIKKI MASSAND

Garden City High School’s senior class reunited on Monday, June 15th with a celebratory car parade. Members of the class decorated their cars to celebrate the end of their high school careers. The high school has announced that it will hold a delayed graduaton ceremony on July 21st.

Library Bd reviews reopening plans BY RIKKI MASSAND The Garden City Public Library’s Board of Trustees heard an update from its Library Reopening Committee, as well as updates from their liaison to the Village Board, Village Trustee Colleen Foley, during the GCPL Board’s Monday June 8, virtual meeting. The Library Board does not anticipate any final decisions on reopening the community’s treasured public building in the library for several more weeks, and the Board will reconvene for

its July meeting a week earlier than originally scheduled -- also noted to be another virtual meeting -- on Monday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. Trustee Foley noted the preparedness taking place throughout Village of Garden City departments and divisions, led by the initiatives Village Auditor (and resident) Courtney Rosenblatt has worked on for the last several months, which she detailed during the Board of Trustees’ June 4 Zoom meeting (reported on in The Garden City

News June 12 edition). “Courtney is putting together the procedures for all village employees to follow, with everyone wearing masks and some areas will have people’s temperatures taken. We will be having cleaning stations in appropriate places. But she is aware that the GCPL Board is working on a plan for safety procedures specifically for the Library, and she knows it should be folded into the village-wide plan. The Library will be part of

A formal proposal to open the Garden City Pool for the summer 2020 season was discussed for over 90 minutes during the Recreation Commission’s Tuesday, June 16 meeting held via Zoom. The Commission ultimately decided to report to the Village Board of Trustees that the earliest the pool complex could open would be Saturday, July 11th. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet via Zoom on Thursday, June 18th and was expected to take action on the matter then. Although the earliest start date of this year’s abridged pools season would be Saturday, July 11, the Rec. Commission members and longtime Pool staff are optimistic that there will be community engagement and the village’s top-notch pool facility can serve as a refuge for residents and families looking to beat the heat and have a fun, relaxing time at the pool. Superintendent of Recreation and Parks Paul Blake loves his hometown Garden City Pool, having swam here since his childhood and as an adult, taking on a managerial role with Village Recreation four decades ago. On Tuesday night he described his uneasiness over the past weekend, as he was “fretful” over the fate of the pool opening after the height of the pandemic caused all organized village recreation to shut down or shift to online participation. “We are not going to be able to run a typical Garden City Pool summer program -- swim lessons this year are extremely doubtful, the See page 56
