END OF AN ERA

provide enough structure for the village to plan operation of the pool facility, and with adequate preparations and fewer patrons than any regular summer. Village Auditor Courtney Rosenblatt said she and Blake had a discussion on potential pool season hours prior to the Board meeting. Blake told the Board five
The Village Board of Trustees recently hosted three discussions on the potential to close 7th Street for outdoor dining this summer, during its meetings May 21 and June 4 held over Zoom and this week, in-person at the St. Paul’s Fieldhouse. Finally on June 9 a consensus was reached for approving the outdoor dining plan, and related closure of all of 7th Street (except for entrance ways of the apartment residents at its west end), hopefully later in June. The village confirms that an official starting date “is to be determined” pending the filing and approval of an application for Municipal Extension with the New York State Liquor Authority. As approved the main local shopping hub and ‘restaurant row’ of Garden City will be open for outdoor, on-street dining and closed to vehicular traffic on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for dinner hours -- 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The street closure will need to begin at 3 p.m. on those four days of the week, as to allow proper time for village employees and restaurant staff to have the areas prepared with secured barricades, social distancing measures and more precautions. The period for the street closure and initial outdoor dining, with distancing between tables, is formalized for a 12-week period this summer, through Labor Day weekend (September 5-6-7). The Board of Trustees will revisit the outdoor dining operations and protocols at its Thursday, July 16 meeting. As the plan exists now for 7th Street, the Garden City Police Department will block off the street from Franklin Avenue all the way to Hilton Avenue as it had in prior years for the summer’s Friday Night Promenades. Police aide vehicles will be stationed at the Hilton Avenue/7th Street intersection and the Franklin Avenue/7th Street intersection similar to the Promenades. The village Department of Public Works will coordinate the use of pails as temporary barricades that can be moved quickly if necessary. A long debate took place on the timing of the street closures during the Board’s Tuesday, June 9 meeting and Village Administrator Ralph V. Suozzi explained that there could be adjustments to precisely when the initial stages of the 7th Street closure takes place, as afternoons are quieter and there are “lunch crowds” for certain businesses, right now with operations for takeaway and delivery-only. “The Board and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce talked about

Trustees consider issues for pool season (if there is one) BY RIKKI MASSAND If the coronavirus pandemic continues to slow in New York State, the state may enter into Phase IV of the economic and social reopening protocols outlined by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo by mid-July. If that happens and all criteria are met, Village Superintendent of Recreation and Parks Paul Blake advised the Board last week that the
Garden City Pool could open for summer -- with a limited capacity and new safety and distancing measures in effect -- on the weekend of Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12. The Board of Trustees’ meeting via Zoom on Thursday, June 4, provided much insight into the decision-making process involved for village officials, only once the Nassau County Department of Health and New York State guidelines
