Village Board gets to ‘root cause’ of sidewalk repairs

RIVALS DEFEATED

BY RIKKI MASSAND

H2M Architects + Engineers of Melville, water consultant firm to the Village of Garden City, advised village officials in a letter dated May 27, 2021 that there is “an immediate need to purchase hydrogen peroxide” as part of the village’s new AOP treatment systems, The Board of Trustees also had declared an emergency regarding the pur-

At its meeting on June 3rd, the Garden City Board of Trustees discussed the impacts of village-owned trees along the sidewalks of Garden City creating sidewalk repair issues. Many residents have received bills for this expense -- involving Public Works’ employees’ labor -- over many years, Trustee John Delany spoke about the village-owned trees which he said are those only between sidewalks and the street, not trees between a home and the sidewalk. He says there are municipal road projects that include sidewalk repairs, which were often attributed to the village-owned trees causing the sidewalks to be in poor condition and cracking, mostly due to roots or the tree trunk. “I would like to see in those instances, where village trees have caused the problem, that we do not make charges the responsibility of a homeowner as a result of that. For years we’ve charged the homeowner for the repair of sidewalks. I think that should continue except for instances where the village tree has caused the problem. There are plenty of areas of the village where this is occurring and I feel it is unfair for us to charge the homeowner because of the village tree,” he said. Deputy Superintendent of Public Works Domenick Stanco, who was in attendance at the meeting, told the Board and the handful of residents present that DPW works to investigate conditions around village-owned trees, as well as the trees specifically on residential and commercial properties, to check the individual sidewalks’ status. He noted the active annual inspections taking place for sidewalks, and how conditions are evaluated prior to DPW action. “The Village has an annual inspection program for the sidewalks where we conduct field surveys adjacent to any property owners. The survey consists of examining if the sidewalk is deteriorated or heaved up from tree roots. Anything that has been cracked, broken, uneven or misaligned has all been recorded through the survey….We’ve had numerous complaints throughout the years where residents do raise a question on sidewalks being impacted most by village trees that were planted previously. It’s been an ongoing thing and we have continued trying to figure out how to remedy the problem. According to the cur-

Financial matters occupy trustees at Village of GC Board meeting BY RIKKI MASSAND At its meeting held at Cluett Hall and via Zoom on Thursday June 3, the Village Board approved hydrogen peroxide for the treatment systems at Garden City’s municipal water wells, designed to remove emerging contaminants including 1,4 dioxane. Trustees voted unanimously to authorize

Mayor Veneziale to execute a contract with vendor USP Peroxide, LLC (USP Technologies) of Atlanta, Georgia, and the rates for the hydrogen peroxide supply will be at a comparable price to the low bid received by the Hicksville Water District. Hicksville Water District had previously undertaken the competitive bidding process for hydrogen peroxide for its treatment systems.
