Traffic Commission evaluates road calming ,traffic study goals BY RIKKI MASSAND At the Village of Garden City Traffic Commission meeting held on Thursday, May 20, commission members learned of the time frame for two traffic calming studies in the village’s Central section. One study would examine “traffic calming” measures on Cathedral Avenue and the other would look at the
Central Section’s numbered streets between Cathedral and Hilton Avenues. Both studies are to be performed by firm Creighton Manning Engineering, LLP but the numbered streets’ study has yet to be approved by the Village Board of Trustees.

Administrator
Ralph Suozzi provided an update after he, along with Village Trustee Terry Digan, contacted Nassau County a few weeks ago to relay the importance of the traffic calming study for Cathedral Avenue. “That was also setting expectations for the future to speak with our consultants (Creighton Manning) on See page 35
On May 20th the Village Traffic Commission discussed multiple pressing issues and Garden City Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson spoke about concerns raised about an unforeseen impact from the the Long Island Island Rail Road’s Third Track project. The project redesigned the former New Hyde Park Road grade crossing into an underpass, providing and straight shot down to Stewart Avenue. On Monday May 17, a resident who lives at the corner of New Hyde Park Road and Stratford Avenue emailed the Village of Garden City, “advising of an upsurge in vehicular collisions at this intersection since the LIRR underpass construction was completed.” The resident requested that traffic safety measures be considered for both north and south-bound travel along New Hyde Park Road. Elimination of the LIRR grade crossing at New Hyde Park Road has apparently resulted in more accidents, as there is no more ‘stop’ at the tracks to slow traffic. Commissioner Jackson said New Hyde Park Road, like Stewart Avenue and Cathedral Avenue, is a Nassau County road and the county has jurisdiction over traffic lights and structural road changes. He provided details of recent years’ accident data to help the Commission understand some of the roadway’s issues. See page 32
