Central Bark? Recreation Comm. discusses dog park location options BY RIKKI MASSAND Not long before the pandemic began to impact the New York region and cause shutdowns and slowdowns everywhere, the Board of Commissioners of Recreational and Cultural Affairs (the village Rec. Commission) heard the proposal from Stratford School student Carter Jones for a
centrally-located municipal dog park. Jones’ presentation in January 2020, reported in The Garden City News at the time, delivered a catch phrase of “St. PAWS -- Free to Be.” It appears a St. Paul’s location is no longer under consideration, with the Village now considering new candidates for locating the dog park on village property. A green space at Second Street and
Hilton Avenue, as well as an area of Grove Street’s southern end are currently under consideration. The Grove Street ‘patch’ area is already commonly used by dog owners exercising their pets and sometimes meeting up. With summer arriving soon, the Garden City Pool season will offer an oasis to members when it opens in June. However at a recent meeting of the Recreation Commission, Superintendent of Recreation and Parks Paul Blake discussed the surprising guidance from the Nassau County Department of Health that still require restrictions at the pool. But the good news is, as Covid-19 rates of transmission continue to rapidly drop there could be a brighter and more unencumbered time ahead for pool visits and activities. That just won’t be in the earliest weeks of the summer, from all indications. “We were told back in April, with documents received from the Health Department, that said pools can open and there was nothing about modified capacity limits. But two days later, when we contacted the Nassau County Department of Health they told us ‘Oh no, those capacity limits ARE still in effect.’ As of today (May 13) we are again limited to 50% capacity at the pool. Gov. Cuomo made an announcement yesterday that he anticipates lifting his restrictions on or about July 4,” Blake explained during the meeting of the Board of Commissioners of Recreational and Cultural Affairs, held May 13 at the Garden City Senior Center. The Garden City Pool will open for its regular season on Saturday, June 12th. Blake noted that from this opening date and until such restrictions are lifted, the same procedures as last year will be required for all pool attendees. Patrons will be required to make advance reservations for morning or afternoon sessions. The general morning sessions run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. while the general afternoon sessions will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The one-hour period in between sessions each operating day will be for deep cleaning and sanitization See page 45
