Village budget hawks take off with new Board in place BY RIKKI N. MASSAND Garden City’s Village Board of Trustees got a five-person refresh with the 2021 election. After the official swearing-in ceremonies of Monday April 5 the new Board members wasted no time in turning their attention to municipal finance and budget decisions, including everything from filling open positions on village staff to starting a full review of the proposed 2021-2022 Garden

City budget. New Mayor Cosmo Veneziale and the four newly elected trustees were eager to dissect proposed cost allocations for Human Resources included as actionable items on the April 5 Village Board meeting agenda. Meanwhile among the trustees whose terms carried over from 20202021, Trustee Colleen Foley was vocal in scrutinizing the details of financial information and staffing plans coming

before the Board. The Board’s authorization was requested to amend the 2020-’21 village budget (June 1, 2020 through May 31, 2021) to replace a job title, within the Finance Department from a typist clerk position with an annual starting salary of $38,184 to a senior typist clerk, with commensurate salary of $43,969 -- $5,785 more in budgeted salary. Parents speaking during the public comment period of the Garden City Board of Education’s April 20 discussed everything from the school district’s proposed budget to the students’ return to classrooms and school buildings, but the loudest points delivered were by parents demanding that the district “return to normal.” At the meeting, the Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the proposed 2021-2022 schools’ budget, at $122,381,487. With the district budget hearing now set for Tuesday May 4 and the community’s budget vote and election for two board of education trustees set for May 18. However, much of the meeting’s comments centered on suggestions by parents that the district hold in-person events leading up to the school year’s finish, including events where people would congregate in close quarters. A few even suggested that the universal masking throughout the school buildings and premises needs to stop immediately. Some parents mentioned end-of-school-year events such as gatherings, school plays, and musical performances which they hope ‘don’t See page 52

GCPD assists in active shooter incident On Tuesday, April 20th, Garden City Police assisted the Nassau County Police following a shooting at the Stop and Shop supermarket in West Hempstead. According to police, just after 10 a.m. an employee of the store, Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, shot and killed the manager and wounded two other employees before fleeing on foot. Surrounding areas, including Garden City were locked down as a manhunt was underway. Wilson was arrested at about three p.m. at his home. Garden City Police, along with officers from Nassau County and the Hempstead Police Department secured the area during the manhunt.
