Village Board to restore water superintendent job

Garden City High School’s Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team kicked off its season with its first game on March 24th against Melville. GC won 11-7 with great offensive and defensive efforts. See page 54.

During a budget meeting on March 16th, the Garden City Board of Trustees considered budgeting funds to hire a superintendent of the Water Department, a position that was last held by Frank Koch in 2015. For the proposed Public Works department budget, there are a total of 79 full-time positions. Village Administrator Ralph V. Suozzi, in addressing the Board of Trustees, discussed the reestablishment of the Water Department superintendent position. Suozzi announced that the position is under the CSEA (union) Supervisory Collective Bargaining Unit, which has salary ranges of $123,000 to $146,000 annually under the CSEA’s current contract, with the salary split between the Water Department (75%) and Department of Public Works (25%). Another position to be included for the 2022-2023 village budget is a water, sewer service trainee for the distribution operations of the village’s Water Department. “In the Water Department we’re mainly talking about the distribution of water to homes but the department also consists of the water See page 49

Longtime faculty member to take EPOA plans primary for over as Stewart School principal BOE open seat BY GARY SIMEONE

Keri Hand has served in many capacities at Stewart School since her arrival at the school in 2006. The Levittown resident has been a teacher at the 4th and 5th grade levels, served as an assistant principal, and is set to take over as school principal on July 1st.

“I came to Stewart School straight out of college and have been so lucky to have been a part of this special place, which I consider one big community of students parents and teachers,” said Hand. “In my new role as principal, I look forward to elevating the teaching and learning experience as well as

helping students engage in the learning processes together.” Hand, who is 38 years old, is currently serving as the school’s assistant principal, a role she has been in since 2018. She said that her goals include helping students grow to be their personal bests and See page 44

Garden City’s Eastern Property Owners Association has announced that it will hold a primary to fill the seat of Michael Cassaro, who recently resigned from the Garden City Board of Election. Two candidates, Joe Sileo and Niten Jaiswal, are seeking the EPOA nomination. The candidates will meet with the public during a “Meet and Greet” event on Saturday, April 2nd between 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Seventh Street between Dunkin Donuts and the French Workshop. The primary will be held on Tuesday, April 5th between 5 and 9 p.m. at the Senior Center at 6 Golf Club Lane. All residents of the Eastern Section may vote in the primary. The General Election for the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, May 17th.
