Board member replacement plans face backlash

On Tuesda, the Garden City Board of Education met to determine the best course of action to fill former Trustee Michael Cassaro’s seat and hear additional 2022/23 school year instructional budget proposals from the district. The night began with a discussion of the three options the Board has in terms of finding a replacement for the open position; these options are to leave the seat vacant, appoint someone to fill that seat temporarily until the regularly scheduled election on May 17, or hold a special election. Rising revenues from GC Building Dept BY RIKKI MASSAND The Village of Garden City’s Building Department, a revenue generator over the last several years, was the subject of a Board of Trustees’ budget work session on Thursday, March 10. The total proposed Village of Garden City budget for 20222023 is $65.04 million, representing an increase from the current fiscal year’s forecast

budget of $63.67 million. The modified budget for this fiscal year, 2021-2022 is $66.08 million, as costs appear slightly higher than the adopted current year budget of $65.056 million.

Revenues continue to rise

Superintendent of Building Giuseppe Giovanniello presented the village trustees with good news as he said revenues continue to rise, with much

construction and project work being done in Garden City. “My inspectors are out there each day, making sure everything is going according to plan and adhering to code. I thank all of them for their hard work. Year-to-year we will not foresee any major building projects for the coming fiscal year, about 16 months out, but sometimes See page 46

GCPD presents budget for equipment, tech BY RIKKI MASSAND The Village of Garden City’s proposed Police Department Budget for 2022-2023 was presented by Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson at the Board of Trustees’ budget work session on Wednesday, March 16. Replacement of GCPD vehicles comes forward as a 5-year capital program, beginning with $196,000 to be allocated in fiscal year 2022-2023 followed by increasing amounts for the next four budget years. The 2024-2025 fiscal year would see an allocation of $219,00 to police vehicles, and then 2025-2026 would have $222,000, topped by $234,000 in fiscal year 2026-2027. The total allocation for police vehicles’ costs over the next five village fiscal years is a proposed $1.072 million. The department has an existing capital project expense for police vehicles.
