Hofstra student organizes coronavirus help group BY GARY SIMEONE Our country is in unprecedented times with the new coronavirus disease called COVID-19 affecting every region around the world. The statistics have so far shown us that this novel disease has proven to be more lethal to certain demographics of our population, including the elderly and people with underly-

ing health conditions. This does not mean that the younger population cannot help combat this disease and lessen its effects on our vulnerable population. Jayne Guarino, a Hofstra University law student, wanted to do her part to help our most vulnerable population in these tough times. The 25-year-old recently formed a Farmingdale Facebook

group to reach out to local volunteers to aid in tasks like grocery shopping and picking up prescription medications for people. “I understand this is a scary time for a lot of people, and as a relatively healthy 25-year-old, the coronavirus doesn’t pose the same risks to me as it does to others,” said Guarino. Directives to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as announced by President Donald Trump’s administration and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office are in effect for all Village of Garden City departmental and ancillary operations. In a March 19 interview with The Garden City News, Mayor Theresa Trouvé explained the coordination of local municipal government efforts and village employees now working from home. “We continue following the advice of our governor and president and our leading medical field professionals including the Centers for Disease Control. We have reduced the workforce dramatically with our temporary closure of Village Hall. I know an awful lot of our staff, as many as we could have, are working from home -- people who can work at home do so while we’re bringing some people in who have to come in.” Over the last few days the Village completed all the legal necessities to enable it to make declarations and parameters involving employees’ working from home, including special procedures and allocations of their functions. “We did this quickly in the past few days and I feel quite confident. Village administration has done the best it can to take a proactive, engaged approach and (as of 9:30 a.m. on March 19, 2020) we have no word that anyone in the entire municipal workforce has become ill due to COVID-19. I feel very positive about this protocol and everyone has been cooperative to take the requirements very seriously,” the mayor said Thursday. Trouvé notes that Garden City Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson, with decades of experience in New York City’s police operations, is considered an expert for disaster response, emergency management and preparedness. Her confidence that the GCPD can continue with its fully-functional roles to protect and serve the community is further bolstered by the fact that the GCPD has supplies of protective gear including facemasks. “Our police have work situations where they have to be See page 35
